PMM Shaft Rotation Sensor Planter Monitoring Module Shaft Rotation Sensor Some KINZE planters with a KPM I or II monitor may not have a shaft speed sensor on the planter. The attached document below explains the different situations. PMM Shaft Rotation Sensor 6
Kinze MUXBUS Pin-out To properly test for high power coming out of the PMM or going to a specific seed sensor, across pins A and B (Power and Ground) expect to see 12 to 13 volts when the harness is plugged into the PMM. Touching pins B and C (Ground and Signal) should result in 6 to 7 volts. Content last reviewed on: Reviewed by: AMJ Kinze MUXBUS Pin-out 7
Kinze Variable Sensitivity Seed Tube Sensors Overview: This article will explain the KINZE variable sensitivity sensors and how they are used with the Planter Monitor Module (PMM.) Here are some common questions and answers about KINZE variable sensitivity sensors. Q: Will the PMM sensitivity setting work for all KINZE MUX Bus sensors? A: NO, sensitivity setting will not work for all KINZE MUX Bus sensors. The sensitivity setting will work On KINZE variable sensitivity sensors The sensitivity setting will not work On older KINZE sensors Q: How can I identify a variable sensitivity sensor? A: The adjustable tubes still have a blue Weather- Pak connector. The only way to know is to look at the KINZE part number on the seed tube sensor. Mechanical (Finger) meter GA14214 sensor and seed tube GR1949 sensor only Edge-Vac meter GA12166 sensor and seed tube GR1785 sensor only Q: What time frame did KINZE start to install the variable sensitivity sensors from the factory? A: All 2011 production planters have variable sensitivity seed tube sensors Kinze Variable Sensitivity Seed Tube Sensors 8
Q: In the planter configuration I see the sensitivity setting is set to zero. Do I need to enter a value in the sensitivity setting before loading a configuration? A: NO, leave the sensitivity at ZERO. The user does not need to enter a sensitivity value. Once the user selects a variety and loads it to the run screen, the sensitivity will automatically change based on what product type (Corn or Soybeans) the variety is. NOTE: The sensitivity setting is linked to crop type. Q: What are the recommended default settings for Corn & Soybeans? A: Corn 15 Soybeans 10 Sorghum 5 Q: When is it appropriate to change the sensitivity setting? A: If the monitor does not reflect the actual population after performing a dig test. NOTE: If sensitivity needs to be changed. Recommend changing (+/-) 2 values at a time and go from there. Kinze Variable Sensitivity Seed Tube Sensors 9
Sensitivity Threshold The sensitivity threshold (also referred to as seed size) works to filter out dust and other debris to ensure only seeds are counted. Default sensitivity thresholds per crop type, automatically assigned when selecting crop type, are usually adequate for most conditions. Default sensitivity values are: 15 for Corn 10 for Soybeans 5 for Sorghum The value range for sensitivity is 0 to 31 where 0 is most sensitive and 31 is least sensitive. When tuning, it is recommended to change the threshold one value (1) at a time until proper population is achieved. Always check the population readout on the display against a dig test to ensure correct operation. Once the sensitivity is changed, it becomes the default value for the crop type. Sensitivity Threshold 10
Q: What will alarm with the Planter Monitor Module if a row goes into a high/low seed flow situation? Question: What will alarm with the PMM when a row goes to high/low seed flow? Answer: When high or low seed flow is recognized on a row (seed flow is high/lower than the % threshold), a warning will appear on screen listing the offending row(s) and will be accompanied by an audible alarm as well as a seed rate warning across the top of the screen. The population bar graph will also show red at the corresponding % level of the threshold setting, e.g. row 3 threshold was 100%. Q: What will alarm with the Planter Monitor Module if a row goes into a high/low seed flow situation? 11
Q: What will alarm with the Planter Monitor Module if a row goes into a high/low seed flow situation? 12
Q: What requirements must be met for coverage logging with the Planter Monitor Module (PMM)? Question: What is needed for coverage logging with the PMM? Answer: PMM only with shaft speed sensor: Area on/off will be toggled on from off if shaft speed sensed by the PMM is greater than 0. Area on/off will be toggled off from on if shaft speed sensed by the PMM is equal to 0. PMM only without shaft speed sensor: Area on/off will need to be manually toggled by the area on/off button in the lower right corner of the screen. PMM with clutch control: The system will map when clutch sections are on and ground speed is present. PMM with rate control: The system will map when hydraulic drive(s) shaft speed RPM is greater than 0 and ground speed is present. PMM with clutch and rate control: The system will map when drive shaft speed RPM is greater than 0, ground speed is registering and clutch sections are on. Q: What requirements must be met for coverage logging with the Planter Monitor Module (PMM)? 13
Q: What happens when seed flow for a row goes to zero when planting with a Planter Monitor Module? Question: What happens when seed flow for a row goes to zero when planting with a PMM and ground speed is present? Answer: User will receive a "Seed Rate Alarm" dialog with the row(s) reporting no seed flow along with an audible alarm and a warning across the top of the screen. User will need to acknowledge the dialog for the audible alarm to stop. Additionally, the offending row(s) on the bar graph will flash red at the 60% population rate level. Q: What happens when seed flow for a row goes to zero when planting with a Planter Monitor Module? 14

Q: There's an error - the number of rows in the configuration does not match PMM setup; why can't I load the configuration? Question: There's an error - the number of rows in the configuration does not match PMM setup; why can't I load the configuration? Answer: The error is occuring because there is a difference in the number of seed tube sensors in the configuration vs. the Planter Monitor Setup. Navigate to the PMM Setup page and press Planter Configuration. From the Planter Configuration page, specify the correct number of seed tube sensors on the planter. In this case, 16 sensors were in the configuration yet I specified 15 sensors in the Planter Configuration page. Q: There's an error - the number of rows in the configuration does not match PMM setup; why can't 16I load th
Changing the number of sensors in the Planter Configuration page will require the MUX-bus detection process to be re-done. The configuration should be able to load to the run screen following this correction. Q: There's an error - the number of rows in the configuration does not match PMM setup; why can't 17I load th
Q: How do I perform the Mux BUS sensor detection process? Question: How do I perform the Kinze Mux BUS sensor detection procedure? Answer: The first step in the Mux BUS sensor detection procedure is to unplug all planter monitoring sensors on the planter. This document may help identify the location of the sensors. The Mux BUS procedure will fail if a sensor remains plugged in to the harness. In the display, create 2 configurations if your Kinze is an interplant planter. When creating the bean configuration, check mark the split rows enabled option (pictured) so the system can learn all the sensors once. Highlight the planter monitor configuration and press the wrench. From the configuration setup page, press the seed monitor button as highlighted below: From the planter monitor setup page, press planter configuration. Q: How do I perform the Mux BUS sensor detection process? 18
On the page pictured below you will specify the monitoring sensors that are on the planter. It is imperative to properly specify the amount and types of sensors or the Mux BUS detection will fail. After defining the sensors on the planter, press the finish button. Q: How do I perform the Mux BUS sensor detection process? 19
At the sensor detection page, follow the order of operation outlined to the left of the page. Begin with the rear row seed sensors and continue plugging sensors step 2 through 5. Wait for the display to beep 3 times before plugging in the next sensor. After plugging in all the sensors, press finish and the Mux BUS sensor detection will be complete. Q: How do I perform the Mux BUS sensor detection process? 20
Kinze Seed Tube Sensors (2012+) - No Bar Graphs Issue: Planter Monitor Module (PMM) not displaying a population bar graph on certain rows. The seeds/sec for these rows in the diagnostic screen will read 0. Sensor status will still indicate as "OK." This could be a result of the seed sensor(s) not being detected properly upon start up on the MUXBUS communication line. Rebooting the display or reinstalling the sensor can resolve the issue temporarily. Resolution: Check that the sensor firmware is up to date. If the sensor firmware is on a version older than v.08, the sensor will need to be updated to current firmware. In order to check and/or update the sensor(s), please contact your local Kinze dealer. If the sensor(s) is up to date and still exhibiting the issue, refer to the steps below: If there is a specific alarm on the display, refer to the PMM Feature User Guide (PN: ) Verify voltage to the sensor. Article: Kinze MUXBUS Pin-out Inspect that sensor is properly installed and connected. Verify the sensor connection is not dirty. Verify the sensor cable is not damaged. Replace sensor to verify it is faulty. Content last reviewed on: Reviewed by: AMJ Kinze Seed Tube Sensors (2012+) - No Bar Graphs 21
