2 2 (7) 1 Introduction This document aims to be a beginner s guide into IP telephony based on the OptiMobile UniPhone client. In this document a UniPhone user should be able to find a step by step guide to: Introduction to IP telephony Pre-requisites for IP telephony Getting up and running with the UniPhone

3 3 (7) 2 Introduction to IP telephony 2.1 What is VoIP and do I need to care? VoIP allows users to use regular telephone networks anywhere through any internet service provider, and avoids issues on long distance charges that are normally subject to callers. This latter concept is also referred to as IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband, broadband telephony, and broadband phone. (from Wikipedia) Does a user need to care? No, not really. With IP telephony though, it is important to understand that power shortage etc might close down your internet access equipment and thereby also your telephony. The UniPhone solution will always use cellular networks as a back up for IP telephony and thus ensure availability of telephony in most situations. 2.2 How does it work With UniPhone installed the mobile phone can connect to Wi-Fi networks in a very similar fashion as for portable computers connecting to Wi-Fi Networks at home, office, airports, cafés or any other place with Wi-Fi access. 2.3 Why IP telephony The most obvious reason is cost reduction under different circumstances: Say good bye to your fixed line telephony provider and use your broadband access for telephony Calling home when you are abroad at the same tariff as for local telephony Corporates can call for free between employees, and offices in different locations/countries can be tied together in terms of telephony. 3 About UniPhone UniPhone is a client program that can be installed on mobile phones with an operating system that supports external programs. UniPhone merges the phone s native user interface with the capability for IP telephony. The user will not have to manually select between IP telephony and traditional mobile telephony (3G/GSM) since that is taken care of by the client. See picture 1 below for a screenshot of the user interface.

In this section we will go through them one by one and give a brief introduction to why they are needed. Mobile phone with Wi-Fi The mobile phone will connect to the internet/local intranet via WI-FI. This is a must have requirement GSM Subscription This is most likely already in place with your active SIM-card and is needed when you are out of Wi-Fi coverage. UniPhone client You will need the UniPhone client installed on your Mobile phone. UniPhone client can be acquired from e.g. Wi-Fi access (also called WLAN) For IP telephony there has to be somewhere to connect. A Wi-Fi connection is needed, that could be the wireless router at home or at office. It could also be the Wi- Fi coverage in cafés, airports, surf zones or other places where Wi-Fi connection is offered. IP telephony provider Please see section IP telephony provider below. 5 IP telephony provider To make IP phone calls you need to have access to an IP telephony infrastructure. That can be e.g. via a subscription with an IP telephony operator or via the IP telephony infrastructure at your company.

5 5 (7) To connect you would typically need: SIP Proxy Username Password Your IP telephony operator or company IT department should be able to help you with the details. 5.1 IP telephony operator The external party providing this feature could be your Broadband supplier if they provide IP telephony services. It could also be any other IP telephony operator separated from your broadband supplier. Search e.g. Google for IP telephony and you will see several options. It is default to have a subscription with an operator that provides IP telephony. This is the alternative for replacing fixed line subscription for home telephony and small to medium enterprises (see also next section). 5.2 Company IP telephony Today it has become more common to have an office PBX(switch) that supports IP telephony. In those cases it is possible to replace the fixed desk phones and use UniPhone enhanced mobile phones as extensions to the PBX. That will enable users to reach eachother using short numbers and to be able to make calls via the enterprise PBX when connected to WI-FI at office or anywhere globally. In this case the enterprise will assume the role as the IP telephony operator. 6 Configuring When it comes to configuring there are two things to configure, the mobile phone and the UniPhone client. First you need to install the UniPhone client on your terminal. 6.1 Configuring the Mobile Phone The configuration of the mobile phone is terminal dependent but there are similar actions needed. Here we will go through two alternatives, the wireless router and the hot spot alternative The Wireless Router 1. Switch on your Wi-Fi 2. Search for Wi-Fi (SSID) to find the name of the Wi-Fi you would like to connect to 3. Select Wi-Fi and connect 4. Enter data e.g. username, password, encryption key, The hotspot 1. Open the browser and enter user data or buy minutes using e.g. a credit card

6 6 (7) 6.2 Configuring the UniPhone First you will need to install the client on you mobile phone. That can be done by clicking a link to download and install the client. It can also be done using the software installation program delivered with the mobile phone. Picture 2. Enter SIP settings and User data Find the UniPhone application and activate it. It can be searched for under accessories, entertainment or similar folders. Select More option Select Settings Select More (alt More/Options->New profile) and enter name of profile. Could be any name of your choice e.g. UniPhone Save Still under settings select edit profile Enter SIP proxy (see IP telephony provider section ) Enter User name Enter Password Save

7 7 (7) 7 Congratulations! You are ready to go! You can now use your UniPhone-enhanced mobile phone to make phone calls as normal via internet. Disclaimer: In most cases the steps described above will be all you need to start calling with your UniPhone-enhanced mobile phone. However the UniPhone holds a number of advanced features available for end-users to tailor their UniPhone. For those features please study the UniPhone User Manual.
