17 The Media Arizona State University Experiment Points To the Future of NFC An experiment in near-field communications is underway at Arizona State University that shows the potential and future of NFC-enabled smartphones. The university has been rigged so that a select group of students can use their NFC smartphones to gain access to university buildings and resident's rooms. Students have said that they would be Smartphone 'Digital Keys' Coming To Campuses, Offices, Homes Cellphones have already become the way many of us take photos, view mapping data and soon pay for purchases. Now the world s biggest lock-maker wants to transform phones into access devices No More Lockouts: Using Phones as Keys Everyone knows that smartphones can open up doors to more information and entertainment. For a group of students at Arizona State University, smartphones are opening up doors in a more literal sense. Chip in new BlackBerry s opens doors BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM.TO) (RIMM.O) plans to open doors for its key corporate customers using a decade-old technology most in the smartphone industry eye as a way to The Media Experience: Worldwide coverage of BlackBerry and ASU pilot resulted in over 100 feature articles across 130 publications Total news worth more than $3.1M US in advertising dollars More than 425 media mentions worldwide Continued strategic shift from advertising to PR Coming Soon: Digital Door Keys Right on Your Smartphone New door key software currently under development by a California-based subdivision of Sweden's Assa Abloy called HID Global is being tested in the dorms of Arizona State University as a substitute for plastic entry badges. 17
18 The Lessons The Survey data: Over 90% would like to use a smart phone to open all doors on campus 86% said that other people observed them using the smart phone to unlock doors and asked questions or made comments about the technology. Almost all expressed an interest to use the smart phone for other applications on campus including meal purchases, general purchases, the purchase of ASU event tickets, student recreation center access, transit, etc. In initial feedback, approximately 80% of ASU participants reported that using a smart phone to unlock a door is just as convenient as using their Sun Card. 18
