1 TouchPoints instructions Thank you very much for agreeing to take part in the Ipsos MORI TouchPoints study. Full instructions on this research can be found in this document. 2 1 GETTING STARTED You should have received an SMS message on your phone asking you to access a link and download the TouchPoints app via an internet connection. If you have not received this SMS message, please contact us using the contact details at the bottom of this page. If you have received the message please follow the instructions to download the app and contact us if any problems. PLEASE NOTE: To download the app ensure you are connected to Wi-Fi or have a 3G/4G signal 2.1 DIARY SETUP FOR iphone PLEASE NOTE: When you set up the app, the diary will start the next day. To download the app on an iphone, select the link in the SMS message. You will see a screen asking if you to download the TouchPoints app. When you go back to your home screen the TouchPoints app should appear/be downloading there. You can go into Safari to check the instructions at any point during installing. Then a Downloading TouchPoints screen will appear in the Safari browser. Read through this before installing the app as it explains a screen that appears during the installation process and what to do. (If you get the message Open this page in itunes, press Cancel, for this option). Click on Download TouchPoints and then press Install. Once downloaded, select the TouchPoints app which will show you one of two notifications If using ios9 or above a notification labelled Untrusted Enterprise Developer will be shown. Select Cancel and go into Settings > General > Profile & Device Management > REALITYMINE LIMITED. Press Trust REALITYMINE LIMITED and tap Trust. Go back into the TouchPoints app. If using ios8 a notification labelled Add Developer RealityMine will be shown. Select Trust We assure you that the App can be trusted. This won t allow unauthorised software to be used on your device and will only give permission to the TouchPoints app. It is required since the app used is private and unavailable on the App Store. In the TouchPoints app, you will then be asked if TouchPoints can send you notifications. Select Allow. 2

3 2.1 DIARY SETUP FOR iphone TERMS & CONDITIONS / PRIVACY POLICY You will then view a screen with Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy. Please read through these by scrolling down to the bottom of the screen. If you are happy with everything, please tap Accept at the bottom of the screen. If any concerns about anything, please call us on our helpline. DIARY REMINDERS A Diary Reminders screen will be then be shown. This will explain that you will receive a diary reminder notification each day. Press Next Select Set, scroll up/down to choose the time for when you usually wake up and go to sleep, tap on Done and then Next located bottom right. Once complete, select Save at the bottom of the screen. PLEASE NOTE: If 24 hour clock is being used - 7am is 07:00 and 7pm will be 19:00. Depending on the phone signal/connection allow approx 5 minutes for the diary to download correctly. If you are NOT having your phone usage monitored SKIP to the Main Menu (Section 3, Page 6). If you ARE having your phone usage monitored continue on to the end of this section PHONE USAGE BACKGROUND APP If you have agreed for measurement of your phone usage in the background over the 7 days, you will be asked to set up a VPN/Proxy on-screen. Select Set up VPN / Proxy and a page will open to install the profile. Select Allow. At this screen, select Install Following this, you will see a screen The profile has been installed/verified. If it does not say this, please try the previous steps again. Select Done, if you have been successful. Check whether the VPN is connected on the general settings screen. You will then be asked to set the time you usually wake up and go to sleep allowing the app to set appropriate times to remind you to fill in the diary. Press Next Select Install and enter your passcode. If it is not connected, open the VPN page and change the status to Connected. You will see the VPN sign in the status bar on the top of the screen when is is connected. (If you don t have a passcode, please go to Settings / TouchID & Passcode to set up a passcode). 3

4 2.1 DIARY SETUP FOR iphone Before opening the TouchPoints diary app, check the time on your phone is correct (in the top right corner). If it is incorrect, please set it to the correct time or contact the helpline for help. When you have finished the diary, do not delete the app/vpn and do leave it open for 24 hours. You will then see a screen that says Downloading Surveys. When the download is complete, the screen will show as Your first diary entry will be <day of week>/<00.00am 00.30am (Day 1 of 7). SKIP to the Main Menu (Section 3 on Page 6). Your diary will start for you the following day! The first time slot to fill in will be the one starting at midnight. 2.2 DIARY SETUP FOR ANDROID To download the app on an Android phone, select the link in the SMS message. You will see a screen asking if you would like to download the TouchPoints app. TERMS & CONDITIONS / PRIVACY POLICY You will then view a screen with Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy. Please read through these by scrolling down to the bottom of the screen. If you are happy with everything, please tap Accept at the bottom of the screen. If any concerns about anything, please call us on our helpline. Select Continue on the following screen. Click Accept on the access request. On the next screen, enter the username from the SMS message only. This is your unique username; for example: t12345u@tp.uk. SLEEP SET UP / REMINDERS A Diary Reminders screen will be then be shown. This will explain that you will receive a diary reminder notification each day. Press Next. Once the app is installed, open it (from the app store/home screen) by selecting Open. You will then be asked to set the time you usually wake up and go to sleep allowing the app to set appropriate times to remind you to fill in the diary. Press Next 4

5 2.2 DIARY SETUP FOR ANDROID Return to the TouchPoints app and open it. On the TouchPoints app press CONNECT on VPN status. Select Set, scroll up/down to choose the time for when you usually wake up and go to sleep, tap on Set and then Next located bottom right. Once complete, select Done at the bottom of the screen. PLEASE NOTE: If 24 hour clock is being used - 7am Press is 07:00 Continue. and 7pm will be 19:00. Depending on the phone signal/connection allow approx 5 minutes for the diary to download correctly. Enabling accessibility allows us to monitor which apps / websites are being used. Slide this to On and Click OK On the VPN connection request screen, press OK. You will be taken to the home screen. Do wait a couple of minutes for the survey to download and you should see the message Downloading Surveys and TouchPoints is currently downloading new surveys When the download is complete, the screen will show as Your first diary entry will be <day of week>< (Day 1 of 7). Before opening the TouchPoints diary app, please check the time on your phone is correct (in the top right corner). If it is incorrect, please set it to the correct time or contact the helpline for help. When you have finished the diary, please do not delete the app/vpn. 6 3 MAIN MENU You may access the main menu screen within the app by tapping the top left corner. Home: this will take you to the home screen. FAQs: refer to these if any questions. Tap on the questions and answers will appear underneath. Settings: this will allow times for daily reminders to be adjusted. Help: please ignore this section. If you need help, please contact us on the helpline from your own phone. About: this contains the Terms and Conditions / Privacy Policy for you to access and read. 4 PRACTICE DIARY Do practise the diary before starting, to give an accurate feel for completing your entries the day after. On the TouchPoints home screen select Continue in the box stating TouchPoints study. Select the Practice button at the bottom of the screen, to take you to the next screen. Select Practice which will take you into a practice diary. PLEASE NOTE: Select at least one option to move on from that screen. Tap on the option box to make a selection; and a tick sign will be visible on the right side. Once the practice and real diary start, each 30 minutes time slot of the day will be located at the top of the screen. Some lists are longer depending on screen size and will be indicated with an arrow sign. Scroll down to see the full list. 6

7 5 THE DIARY The first time slot in your diary will be midnight to half past midnight. If you are asleep until, for example 7.00am, you will be able to fill in your sleep as a single block of time after you wake up. Your diary is split into 30 minute timeslots over a 7 day period. If fully up to date, your status screen will show No outstanding entries, until your next time slot. When there is at least one entry to fill in, the screen will say Diary Entries to Complete. The message Unable to Upload Data means that the diary is being filled offline, i.e. there is no signal/connection. The entries will be submitted the next time your phone connects. WHAT QUESTIONS WILL I BE ASKED? 1) Recording location Select one option and choose the location you were in for the majority of the 30 minutes. 2) Recording Sleep Enter the time you slept until in your entry by adjusting the time on the clock and selecting Next to continue. Please select the time very carefully to be sure you do not mix up morning and evening times. If the time on your phone is set for the 24 hour clock, when you see 10:00 this will be 10AM in the morning. 10PM in the evenings would be displayed as 22:00. You can change to AM/PM settings by going to Settings\General (Management)\Date/time and switching off 24-Hour time. if this makes the time clearer for you. Please contact us by phone or to inform us if you have slept for more than 12 hours in a day as a diary with too much sleep may be rejected and not eligible for shopping vouchers. 3) Recording Activities Every time slot will have identical questions to understand what you have been doing and to track differences. Ensure you select ALL the activities you have been doing during each time slot. If you are travelling, you will still be asked about the activities you are doing. 4) Recording Mood During each time slot, you will be asked about how you were feeling using a scale. Please move the indicator arrow along the scale. If your mood remains unchanged, move the indicator along the scale and then back again to progress to the next screen. Another question will be asked to get a deeper understanding about feelings during the time slot. Please select as many pictures to describe your feelings. Select None of these if none of the pictures match your mood. 7

8 6 COMPLETION & RETURN You will have completed your diary after 7 full days (up until midnight) and it will finish when you fill in what time you slept until on the morning of day 8. PLEASE NOTE: If you fall behind, check carefully, the time and day the next time slot is referring to, particularly whether it is morning or evening. Diary entries are transmitted back in real time, so, as long as there is a Wi-Fi connection or you have signal/data, when your last time slot is complete and submitted, the screen will show as Diary Complete. Wait for a few minutes for the Diary Complete screen to appear if it does not show up immediately (a short delay may occur depending on your internet connection/signal). Alternatively, keep selecting / located on the top right until you see the Diary Complete screen. If there are further questions, refer to the Frequently Asked Questions section. Please contact us on the helpline or by for any questions not answered in these instructions. As per the diary screen, please do not delete or close the app for another 24 hours so that we can be sure that all of your data has reached us. Please don t forget to complete the separate questionnaire. Once verified that you have completed both the diary and the questionnaire, we will send out your shopping voucher either by or post as a thank you within the following 2-3 weeks. 8

9 7 PHONE BACKGROUND APP if you agreed to take part During our initial telephone call, we mentioned the opportunity to receive an extra shopping voucher if you agreed for us to measure your smartphone usage for 7 days. The app will collect information on your phone usage including the functions that you are using on your phone (e.g. details of when you make calls and send texts) as well as application and internet usage You do not have to do anything once the app is downloaded; the information is sent to us automatically via the app if the app is running and VPN is activated. Please make sure that you have enabled accessibility (if your phone is an Android) and ensure that the VPN is connected. The information received will be used for market research purposes only. The app does not share personal information or anything that will be attributed to you personally. Full details on what is collected are within the privacy policy, accessible in the About section of the app. IMPORTANT (Android only): If you switch your Android phone off, when switching back on, check that the VPN is activated in your Notifications. 8 TABLET BACKGROUND APP if you agreed to take part If you agreed for us to measure your tablet usage for 7 days. the link to install the tablet app is in a separate which you will receive with the subject line TouchPoints tablet app. Click on the link to download the app. (Please note, you should open the on your tablet). IMPORTANT Install on the same day as you install the diary app on your phone IMPORTANT To take part in the tablet app, DO NOT use the username we sent you in the SMS message. You need to use the address to login to the tablet app. SET UP FOR IOS TABLET Refer to the set up instructions for the iphone (Section 2.1) SET UP FOR ANDROID TABLET Refer to the set up instructions for Android (Section 2.2) If you switch your tablet off, when switching back on, check that the VPN is activated in your Notifications. If at any point you stop taking part in the phone usage measurement you WILL NOT be able to take part in the tablet measurement either as both should be completed together. If you have any questions, select the top left corner of the app and check the FAQs. Alternatively. give us a call on the helpline. 9

10 9 SEPARATE QUESTIONNAIRE Please complete the separate questionnaire during the diary completion week. It is a different survey from the TouchPoints diary being completed on your phone. Please complete the questionnaire within 2 weeks of starting the diary. It is designed to provide a complete picture of how participants spend their time, which covers television, radio, newspapers, magazines, travel, internet and mobile phone usage, shopping and a range of other topics. It is a long questionnaire split into sections so that each section is completed at a convenient time over the course of the week. You will have a paper version of the questionnaire if you have told us that you do not use the internet or do not have a computer/tablet. If you provided an address, you can access the questionnaire online by clicking on the link sent to you. In the online version, each section should take approx minutes to complete. You may keep coming back to it at any time during the week by clicking on the link. The online survey is not suitable for completion on a phone. Click on the Submit button when all sections are completed to allow for answers to be sent to us. PLEASE NOTE: We will only send your shopping vouchers once both the diary and questionnaire are completed. THANK YOU! Thank you for taking the time to read these instructions. 11 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS TOUCHPOINTS DIARY APP How do I find my username to log into the diary app? Your username details can either be found on the confirmation we sent after you agreed to take part (if you provided an address) or this can also be found on the SMS message we sent you. Here is an example of what it will look like: t12365u@tp.uk. If this does not work or if you experience any login problems, please contact us. I can t seem to load the app on my phone. You will need to have a signal or connection to download and install the app. Make sure that you are using the same phone that you were referring to when we confirmed your eligibility for the TouchPoints survey over the telephone. If you still cannot load the app after several attempts, please let us know. I think I ve downloaded the app, but I can t find it on my phone. Where the app has downloaded to will depend on different types of phone. If you are struggling, do search in a variety of places on your phone. It s most likely to be found somewhere on your home screen where all the other apps are located. The diary app is called TouchPoints' and will look the above logo in the top right corner What questions are included for each half hour timeslot? For each half an hour timeslot, brief questions are asked to establish where you were, who you were with, what you were doing and how you were feeling at the time. We will also ask you questions about your usage of different media and how you access them The questions are the same for each 30 minute interval. For the purpose of the TouchPoints study, we need you to answer the same short simple questions for each 30 minute period that you are awake over the course of 7 days. The half hour questions are purposely worded identically in order to track differences that might occur from time to time throughout the day. Once you are familiar with the timeslots, they can be accurately completed in a couple of minutes or less. What answers should I select for each question? For most questions, you should click as many items as applied at any time during that half hour. It is not unusual to have multiple items checked for many of the questions. When asked where you were, you will only be able to select one option so please select the location of where you were for the majority of that time slot. Do I have to fill it in every half an hour? You don t literally have to access the diary in every half an hour but at some point you will need to catch up if you fall behind by a few hours. The reminder notifications are in place to help you catch up on your diary entries at least twice during the day. Times when you are sleeping can be recorded in blocks rather than half hour by half hour. How do I know when I am up to date with my diary entries? When you are up to date with all of your timeslots, you will see a screen stating 'No Outstanding Entries' When you have diary entries to fill in, it will show a screen stating 'Diary Entries to Complete'. Select Complete entries and it will show you the next time slot you need to complete. 11

12 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS TOUCHPOINTS DIARY APP How do I move on to the next screen within a timeslot? You should see a next button to select or touch in order to move on to the next screen. This will be located at the bottom of the screen (on the right side). Tap on the Next button to go to the next screen. Please make sure you have something selected on that screen before proceeding, otherwise it will not let you move to the next screen. A tick sign will show when you have the option selected. Remember: If you see an 'arrow down' sign as seen in the image below, you can use your finger to scroll up and see all of the list. (See image below) I have fallen behind on my diary entries. It is not a problem if you fall behind by a few hours as long as you are able to catch up the time slots you missed. Simply enter them all in one session, one by one. The time for each slot, will show at the top of the diary screen. Please try not to fall too far behind. If you are not able to catch up the time slots and would like to continue, please contact the help line as we will be able to help you restart on the following day. Please note, If you are taking part in the background app, your 7 days will also have to start again too. The diary app doesn t appear to be working, what do I do? If you have any problems with the app, or if you think the app has lost any of the information you have entered at any point, please check to make sure your 3G/4G and/or Wi-Fi connection is working first. If your phone is functioning as normal but the app is not, please contact us. I keep getting notifications saying the TouchPoints is no longer running. Please restart the app. If you do get this notification, it may be because you haven t been into the app for a while or you may have closed it. Once you go back into the app, it will restart as normal. If you have an iphone please make sure you don t close the app if you are having your phone monitored. How do I know when I am finished? After completing your entries up to midnight on the seventh day, a message will appear on screen to notify you that the diary has been completed. please don t delete or close the app for another 24 hours so that we can be sure that all of your data has reached us.. Unable to send data message When filling in the diary on your phone, if you see a message saying that you have unsubmitted entries or Unable to Send Data, this means you are filling the diary offline, i.e. your phone does not have signal or connection. The entries will be submitted the next time your phone connects to the internet. My phone is broken or I have a new one part way through the diary. What do I do? If this happens, we will have to send you the link again for you to re-start the diary from the beginning. Please contact us to request this. Will the diary app cost me money? Our TouchPoints apps are free to download, and use a small amount of data daily. If data is not included in your package then you will be charged by your network provider when the application accesses the internet. If you have even a small data allowance within your contract, the data usage is likely to fall within this. However, you may be charged by your network if you exceed the data allowance you have in your contract (as you are for the other apps you download and use). Data plans vary greatly so we cannot state what the cost may be, but it is usually only a small amount. I have accidentally deleted the TouchPoints diary app, what do I do? If this happens, you will need to download the app again using the link (and username for Android phones) we sent you in the SMS message. 12

13 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS BACKGROUND APP PHONE BACKGROUND APP When will you start measuring my phone usage in the background? We will start measuring your phone usage once you have logged into the TouchPoints App; there is no separate app for you to download. If you have an iphone, please don t forget to download the RealityMineVPN profile onto your phone too. I think I ve downloaded the phone background app, but I can t find it on my phone. ANDROID USERS The phone measurement app is integrated with the TouchPoints diary app so once it has downloaded successfully, you will notice that there is a key sign on the top of your screen. Please note this won t always appear on your screen. iphone USERS If the background app has downloaded successfully, you will notice that there is a VPN sign on the top of your screen. You can also check this in General, Settings, Device Management or Profiles and if you select the RealityMineVPN profile, it will say verified. I accidentally deleted the RealityMineVPN profile, how do I get it back? iphone USERS ONLY If you have accidentally deleted the RealityMineVPN profile and would like to still take part in this part, please contact us asap as we can send you the VPN profile again. You will not need to start again as long as you tell us within 24 hours. iphone USERS You can delete the TouchPoints app like you would any other app on your iphone. You can remove the VPN from your phone by going into settings > general > profiles and deleting it ANDROID USERS You can delete the TouchPoints app like you would any other app on your iphone. What information do you collect on the background app? If you explicitly agree to take part in the additional research into how people use their mobile devices, the TouchPoints app will also automatically collect the following information in the background: Date, time and duration of calls made, together with Date and time you send or receive text messages. We DO NOT collect or record the content of your calls, text messages, SMS or MMS. Date and time you send an from your device The App will also record if the recipient of your call, message or is in your device s contacts list but does not tell us the number Your internet browsing habits, including websites you visit (URLs), time spent using the web and any searches you carry out Information about your usage of other apps on your mobile device, including the identity of the apps, when you downloaded them, how often you use them and how long for. Amount of data downloaded to your device, Information about your device, your mobile network and any Wi-Fi connections you use, Including when and for how long you charge it, its battery status, whether it is switched on, off or in a stand-by or 'Airplane' mode. 13

14 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS BACKGROUND APP. Will the monitoring app use up my battery/ affect my phone at all? The application will generally have very little effect on the battery for Android phones. iphone users might experience the battery running down quicker than normal, so you may need to charge your phone more frequently than usual. The application has been fully tested for use on your handset and will not harm the handset or the other applications in anyway. The application has not been created for use on jailbroken or hacked phones. Should you experience significant problems with this, please contact the helpdesk. Does this app go online? Yes. Both the TouchPoints app and the RealityMine VPN profile will go online to submit the information you have given in your diary and, if applicable, to pass the information measured in the background back to us. What if I don t have network coverage, or turn my internet connection off? The TouchPoints app will wait until it detects an internet connection and then perform any update in the background. Will the monitoring app use up my data allowance/cost me? The TouchPoints app will send only small amounts of data over the internet, so the impact on your data allowance should be small. The TouchPoints app is free to download. As long as your mobile phone package includes an appropriate data allowance you will not be charged to use the applications. If data is not included in your package then you will be charged by your network provider when the application accesses the internet. What if I go abroad? Most phones and phone networks will automatically turn off the mobile data connection when you are abroad. This application cannot override that setting. The application will only use the internet when you go abroad if you have set up your phone to allow data access when roaming. Can I use Wi-Fi? The application will access the internet when you use Wi-Fi at home or abroad. Do I need to leave my phone on all the time? You should do whatever you normally do with your phone. Please don t change anything but do not close the app when your phone is on. How about my privacy? We take your privacy very seriously. Please read our privacy policy for more details. There is a link to it on the you have received from us. TABLET BACKGROUND APP Why do I have to use my address as a username? We need you to use your personal address for this part of the research so we know you are taking part in the tablet measurement as well as the phone monitoring. The address to use is the one we sent the tablet app to. Please do not use the username you are using to take part in the diary app / phone usage measurement which will look like this. t12345u@tp.uk. We need you to download on the same day you start the diary and phone background app. As soon as the app and VPN have been installed correctly, it will start measuring your usage. When will you start measuring my tablet usage in the background? When you go into the app, please check you see the screen confirming everything is configured and running correctly. There will be a message on here to say this. We will start measuring your tablet usage once you have downloaded and logged into the TouchPoints App from the link we sent you via . Don t forget to activate the VPN in your notification section if you are using an Android device. I can t seem to load the app on my tablet? If you cannot load the app after several attempts, please let us know by calling the helpline. Please find more FAQs in the main menu of the tablet app under FAQs section. 14

15 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS GENERAL SEPARATE QUESTIONNAIRE PAPER VERSION What are the serial numbers on the paper questionnaire? These are only used to monitor which questionnaires have been returned, so that we can send you your vouchers and monitor response levels. Please do not peel these off. If you are doing the separate questionnaire online, please check your inbox What if I have lost my prepaid return envelope for the paper questionnaire? If you have lost or misplaced the return prepaid envelope, please contact us. ONLINE VERSION I did not receive an If you did not receive an from us, please do make sure to check your Junk s. You can add the TouchPoints address to your Safe Sender List so that you receive all our future s about the TouchPoints study. The survey link in my is not working If the survey link does not work, please copy and paste the link into your internet browser. If you are still experiencing problems, please us or call the helpline. I have clicked on the link twice within 10 minutes, and now I cannot get into the survey All sessions/tabs/browsers that have the survey open should be closed and you will need to wait 10 minutes before you can access the link in your invite again. Please note that if you click on the link before the 10 minute period has been completed, the 10 minute timer will revert back to 0 and a new 10 minute period will begin. My survey link has been blocked Most platforms will have an option to unblock all content from an . This option must be enabled. You could also try to access the link in a different location. Failing that, please either provide an alternative address or contact your mail provider to remove the block. GENERAL QUESTIONS Can the diary be completed by someone else in my household? No. We need the answers on the diary and questionnaire to reflect those of the person who agreed to take part up front to ensure a representative sample of the population of Great Britain. Will my answers be treated in confidence? Yes. Ipsos MORI is a member of the Market Research Society. All answers you provide are treated in strictest confidence and your identity will not be passed on to a third party or connected to your answers in any way.. When will I get my shopping vouchers? The vouchers will be sent to you by or post after we have verified your diary is complete and received and verified your completed separate questionnaire. Please allow 2-3 weeks after you have completed both the diary and separate questionnaire to receive them.
