Internet Penetration & Usage in Japan ~ from Our Internet Survey July, 2007 Daisuke Shibatani Impress R&D Internet Media Research Institute IMPRESS R&D/Internet Media Research Institute 1
1st section; Internet Penetration in Japan: Study Methods Survey is done by Impress R&D/Internet Media Research Institute(IMRI) Target: Household, people aged 3 or older Data collection methods: Extracted randomly from 201 cities nationwide Data collected in accordance with the distribution of geographical location, sex and age Survey method: Telephone sampling (Random digit dialing (RDD)) Survey period: March, 2007 Number of respondents with valid answers: 6,000 people 5,874 households IMPRESS R&D/Institute of Internet Media 2
2nd section; Individual User Usage Trends: Study Methods Survey is done by Impress R&D/Internet Media Research Institute(IMRI) Survey methods: Internet survey Target: Individuals aged 13 or older, using the Internet from home Survey Area: Nationwide Number of samples with valid answers: Out of 5,728 samples with valid answers, extracted 2,000 samples in accordance with the data distribution of sex, age, Internet usage hours on home PC per week acquired from the Internet penetration survey in section 1. Survey Period: April 18(Wed.) 27(Fri.), 2007 IMPRESS R&D/Institute of Internet Media 3
Point of Revisions in Comparison with the Survey in the Previous Year (1) Expanded the research target areas to small cities and villages With the way people use the Internet entering a phase of maturity, it may be no longer enough to only measure the Internet user population and penetration rates. Need to focus more on quality factors such as how the Internet is actually being used, how easy the outside connectivity is, and so on. In 2006: 26 cities with population at half a million or more In 2007: 201 cities including small cities and provinces in rural areas Changed the number of research samples In 2006: 41,025 households (estimated error rate ±0.5% ) In 2007: 6,000 people 5,874 households ( estimated error rate ±1.5% ) The survey cost for reduced number of households has been re-allocated to the enlargement of the survey target cities. Reliability 95% (95 times out of 100 will fall into this range), in case of nationwide composition rate is 50%. 全国での構成比が 50% の場合 IMPRESS R&D/Institute of Internet Media 4
Point of Revisions in Comparison with the Survey in the Previous Year (2) Included the Internet users in the households without fixed phones Households without fixed phones are expected to be increasing especially among thouse with single person or young-generation couples. An increase in the number of mobile internet users is significant. Some do all the ICT activities - not only voice but also the internet - only on mobile phones. In addition to the fixed-phone survey, conducted the online survey by PC and by mobile phones Using the ratio of fixed-phone owners among Internet users, adjusted the telephone survey results to better reflect the reality. IMPRESS R&D/Institute of Internet Media 5
The Number of Internet Users by Access Location and Terminal Types (Unit: ten thousand people) The number of Internet users in Japan: 8,226(66.1%) Home PC users The number of non- Internet Users 4,227(33.9%) 462 (3.7%) 568 (4.6%) PC at workplace,, in school in transportation, and other public places 968 (7.8%) 2,093 (16.8%) 653 (5.2%) 2,083 (16.7%) 1,400 (11.2%) Mobile phones PHS users Population of people aged 3 or older 12,454(as of Oct. 1, 2006) IMPRESS R&D/Institute of Internet Media 6

Using this diffusion Index, the Household IP Completeness of Japan is estimated as 28.2 Household IP Completeness Diffusion index: Defines all IP-based households as 100, basic + media service IP-based households as 66.7, non-internet user household as 0, and calculated the weighted-average.
