Hardware components and their addressing when installing a new system will be discussed as well as the ladder logic programming of the device. Programming components such as counters, timers, sequencers, internal and external relay equivalents will be used to construct sequential ladder logic diagrams. Schedule Description: (Formerly EETEC 36). Get introduced to the exciting world of Programmable Logic Controllers. You will learn basic ladder logic principles and apply that knowledge to a specific controller. A hands-on approach is emphasized in which you will write programs, and troubleshoot real world control programs to solve simple industrial and commercial processes. Basic skills are developed that will enable you to solve more complex problems using timers, counters, sequencers, shift registers and logical comparisons. Electrician Trainees can continue to work as electricians under the supervision of a certified electrician while taking this course. Required course for ETEC major. (Each of the above student learning outcomes for the general education program has a written explanation with illustrations and examples of its application within courses, as well as specific assessment criteria. Consult the GE program information pages.) None of the Above Program-Level Student Learning Outcomes (PSLOs) At the completion of the Electrical or Instrumentation programs the students should be able to: PSLO #1 Gain entry-level or mid-level employment in the electrical or instrumentation field. (ISLO #1) PSLO #2 Troubleshoot, analyze, operate, repair, and install electrical systems equipment. (ISLO #2) PSLO #3 Communicate the technical status of equipment in writing and verbally; be able to work and communicate with teams. (ISO #3) PSLO #4 Safely use electrical or instrumentation test equipment. (ISLO #4) PSLO #5 PSLO #6 Demonstrate the operational concepts of equipment and technology used in the electrical or instrumentation field. (ISLO #5) Demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary to take and pass certification exams for career advancement in electrical or instrumentation fields Course-Level Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs): At the end of the course the student will be able to: 1. Program and install programmable logic controllers to standard industry practices. (PSLO#1) 2. Write and document programmable logic controllers programs (PSLO#3) 3. Apply modern sequential control theory to analyze, operate, troubleshoot and repair programmable logic controllers. (PSLO#2) CSLO Assessment Criteria: 1. CSLO 1: To demonstrate standard industry practices in the programming and installation of PLCs, the student will translate a relay logic diagram into a sequential relay logic program and install the program into a PLC. Their work will be assessed by the following criteria: Correctly identify the various input, output, control and communication modules utilized in the PLC. Form Revised Page 3 of 8
4 Accurately use the Configuration software to program the various modules into the PLC 2. CSLO 2: The student will demonstrate effective communication skills by writing and documenting a PLC program. Student work will be assessed by the following criteria: Accurate use of course vocabulary and notation Ladder logic rung comments are included with the documentation that correctly describes the operation of the rung. Correct use of programming syntax and course vocabulary whether the program runs and accomplishes the specified task 3. CSLO 3: To demonstrate critical thinking skills in the application of sequential control theory, the student will write a PLC program to accomplish specific tasks, document it on a computer, download the program into the PLC memory, then run and troubleshoot the program. Student work will be assessed by the following criteria: Accurate use of course concepts, standard programming logic and notation to accomplish a specified task in the written program; Successful download into PLC memory; Correct use of the controller s function in the ladder logic program The program runs and accomplishes the specified task. Accurate translation of the diagram Assessments: CSLO 1: Install programmable logic controllers to standard industry practices. (PSLO#1) Lab Assignments: Students work in teams and given the components of a PLC system to install and configure to make a functioning PLC. They are assessed for their ability to work effectively and professionally with others while working together to install programmable logic controllers. Exams: Exams will ask students questions similar to what they would find on an employment entrance exam regarding how to install programmable logic controllers to industry standards. Comprehensive Final Exam/ Final Project: Instructors have the option of assigning either a Final Project where students develop an original PLC program including a Technical Report or giving a Comprehensive Final Exam. Both assessments would include portions related to installing programmable logic controllers to industry standards. CSLO 2 Write and document programmable logic controllers programs. (PSLO#3) Homework: Students are assigned chapters to read from the textbook related to writing and documenting computer programs for PLCs. Then they answer the end of the chapter questions and are assessed for their knowledge related to writing and documenting programmable logic controllers programs Lab Assignments: Students work in teams and are given various labs to construct and test including a traffic light control system. They are assessed for their ability to work effectively and professionally with others while working together to write programs for programmable logic controllers.
