This course is designed for the student seeking a career as an automotive technician as well as the existing technicians who want to expand their knowledge. This course will prepare students to take the California Automotive Lamp Installer s license and the ASE A-6 Examination. Schedule Description: The automotive electrical class will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to repair and diagnose all basic and advanced automotive electrical systems including airbag systems, stereo systems, power windows and many other electrical systems. None Program-Level Student Learning Outcomes (PSLOs): Automotive Technology Program-Level Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Be prepared to enter the automotive field, as a general repair technician at all general service and repair stations, or apprentice level at the dealership level (manufacture level), and demonstrate the abilities and behaviors of an automotive professional. 2. Demonstrate the ability to locate, understand and use the repair information found in either repair manuals or online resources including wiring diagrams, trouble trees, torque specs, and all other necessary information. 3. Demonstrate the ability to properly diagnose, adjust and repair all major automotive systems. Meeting or exceed all manufacture specifications. 4. Be prepared to take and pass all ASE examinations A1 A8 and the L1 advanced ASE examination. 5. Clearly explain and practice all safety standards with regard to lifting equipment, shop machinery (brake lathe, strut compressor, machining equipment), chemicals, tool usage, and proper procedures regarding oil and chemical disposal. Course-Level Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs): At the end of the course students will be able to: 1. Safely perform standard shop practices. (PSLO 5) 2. Identify and use equipment (digital volt meter, test lights, graphing meters and scan tools) for diagnosis of automotive electrical systems. (PSLO 1,2) 3. Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair body electric systems (power windows, power locks, power seats, safety restraints, stereo systems, lighting systems and instrument clusters). (PSLO 1,2,3,4,5,) 4. Use proper testing procedures and read a wiring schematic according to manufacture specifications. (PSLO 1,3) 5. 4 Assessment Instruments: Assessments: Homework assignment Lab assignment Mid-Term and Final exam CSLO 1 X CSLO 2 X X X CSLO 3 X X X CSLO 4 X X CSLO 5 X CSLO 1 Lab assignment: As students complete lab projects they will be evaluated for properly using tools safely, maintaining a safe work environment and keeping tools clean and organized CSLO 2 Homework assignment: Homework assignments are assigned from required reading regarding equipment used to diagnosis automotive electrical systems within the courses textbook. Assignments may be based in short quiz format or written question format dependent upon the content of the chapter Example: Explain the difference between thermoelectric and electromagnetic dash instruments. Lab assignment: Through the use of lab assignments students will be required to select and set up the proper diagnostic tool. Assessment will be through observation and evaluation by the instructor. Midterm and Final exam: Exams will follow ASE format (industry test standards) and assess student s ability to correctly identify and explain proper usage of equipment (digital volt meter, test lights, graphing meters and scan tools) for diagnosis of automotive electrical systems. (PSLO 1,5) Example: Why do lead acid batteries become potentially explosive when completely discharged? CSLO 3 Homework assignment: Homework assignments are assigned from required reading within the courses textbook regarding troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing body electric systems including power windows, power locks, power seats, safety restraints, stereo systems, lighting systems and instrument clusters. Assignments may be based in short quiz format or written question format dependent upon the content of the chapter Lab assignment: lab projects will be assigned requiring the student to verify an electrical system failure, arrive at the correct diagnosis and repair the system to like new standards Example: A student may be assigned a vehicle with an inoperative power window. Midterm and Final exam: Exams will follow ASE format (industry test standards) and assess the student s ability to diagnose and identify components in the body electrical category. CSLO 4 Lab assignment: For all lab assignments the student must show the ability to properly follow a wiring diagram. The ability to generate correct diagnostic tests based on schematic information will demonstrate the student s ability to properly read a wiring diagram. Midterm and Final exam: Exams will follow ASE format (industry test standards) and assess the student s ability to identify schematic symbols and read a wiring diagram. CSLO 5 Lab assignment: When assigned a vehicle for diagnosis and repair the student will locate the correct repair manual (book or electronic versions) and then locate the correct information within the manual for an assigned repair. Example: A 98 Ford truck has a failed fuel gauge. The student must locate the 98 domestic truck manual and then locate the wiring diagram within the manual for a 98 Ford truck. 5 Method of Evaluation/Grading: A level student work is characterized by: tests, exams and homework that answer questions accurately regarding basic automotive body electrical systems including identifying body electric components and their function at 90% or above; and lab work that includes selecting and setting up and using correctly the proper diagnostic tool including digital volt meters, graphing meters, and test lights to verify an electrical system failure, arriving at the correct diagnosis and repairing the system to like new standards properly following a wiring diagram with minimal or no guidance and including detailed and including an accurate repair work order with explanation for each diagnosis and repair made. C level student work is characterized by: tests, exams and homework that answer questions accurately regarding basic automotive body electrical systems including identifying body electric components and their function at 70% to 79% and lab work that includes selecting and setting up and using correctly the proper diagnostic including digital volt meters, graphing meters, and test lights to verify an electrical system failure, arriving at the correct diagnosis and repairing the system to like new standards properly following a wiring diagram with guidance and including an accurate repair work order with diagnosis and repair made. Student progress in this course will be evaluated through written examinations covering required text materials, and lab projects required for all students. The evaluation will consist as follows: 2 unit 50 points = 100 points 1 final 100 points = 100 points Homework Ten 10 each = 100 points Lab Practical Using meters / lab scope = 100 points Diagnose electrical faults = 100 points Skills in repairs = 100 points Total 600 points Grades will be assigned based on student performance and total points accumulated.
