2 Course Description Introduction to Web Site Design explores how the Internet works and how websites are made. Students learn fundamental concepts of how websites are conceived, designed, developed, and shared. The course provides instruction, guidance, and experience creating websites employing principles of content design, visual design, user experience, and digital sustainability. Students learn how to code, prepare web graphics and multimedia, built webpages, organize webpages into websites, and run websites that work in today s complex Internet environment. Course Objectives Students who successfully complete this course will have proficiency to do the following: - Design, code, and deploy a website with multiple webpages - Hand-code HTML, CSS to build web pages - Understand basic usage of Javascript and PHP in providing interactivity on web pages. - Apply design principles specific to the web medium to effectively present text, image, multimedia, message, and meaning. - Understand and explain how the Internet works with regards to publishing, accessing, and connecting websites and their web pages. - Understand how to design a responsive website that presents effectively in any device.
3 Course Content Map This list outlines both the course learning objectives and the course content schedule. Course Phase 1: Foundations Cycle Module 1 Learn how to write essential code used by all webpages Recognize and understand essential website motifs that determine design strategies Learn essential webpage design components Understand the concepts of web publishing platforms and content management systems Code your first webpage by hand Module 2 Understand the role and function of websites in the larger context of the Internet Understand the relationship between web servers, websites, and webpages Learn how to access web servers to manage websites and their web pages Learn how to use HTML to control layout of a webpage Learn how to access and read source code to understand design logic of a webpage Upload your first live webpage on the the Internet Module 3 Continue mastering coding in HTML Understand how domain names work and how to use domain registries to manage them Understand the concepts of nameservers, webhosting, and domain name system (DNS) Learn how to determine ownership and authority of a domain name Understand the web design process and how it is different from other design traditions Understand fundamental principles of web color theory Know how to prepare graphics for use on the web Learn how to run tests on your web pages to improve efficiency and performance Plan, design, and publish a multi-page website Module 4 Learn the difference between HTML and CSS in syntax, purpose, and usage Learn how to style web page components with CSS Understand fundamental principles of web typography Learn how to use web fonts Learn the difference between static and dynamic web design
4 Module 5 Learn design visualization methods, including preparation of maps and comps Understand the concepts of user experience and user interface Continue master coding in CSS. Learn methods of design for the various webpage design components. Learn about designing navigation and menu components. Present your version 2 multi-page website. Course Phase 2: Design Cycle Throughout this phase, students continue coding practice in HTML and CSS. Module 6 Learn basics of Javascript. Learn methods of presenting images and multimedia. Learn the purpose and process of developing a functional specification for your project. Design, develop and publish a landing page. Module 7 Learn the purpose and process of developing a detailed design document (DDD). Learn methods of presenting tabular/columnar information. Understand the concepts of identity and branding and know how to address them in design. Design, develop, and publish a brochure website. Module 8 Learn methods of designing forms and other user input experiences. Learn basics of writing PHP to support form usage. Design, develop and publish a portfolio website. Module 9 Learn methods for optimizing website and webpages for search engine optimization (SEO). Learn methods of linking websites with social media. Learn and simulate the client-studio model of designing websites. Module 10 Present your client design projects.
5 Course Phase 3: Project Cycle Throughout this phase, students continue coding practice in HTML and CSS. Also, students rework all their projects to date to satisfy responsive design requirements. Module 11 Learn fundamentals of responsive web design Learn how to set up and configure a media query Understand the role of the responsive framework Module 12 Learn how to code flexible layouts Module 13 Learn how to code flexible content components including blocks and images Module 14 Learn how to code flexible menu and navigation components Module 15 Present your final website project Course Resources This course requires no textbooks, but does require Internet access so that students can reliably access websites that will be used as reference and/or tools in conjunction with learning topics. This list of online resources includes:
6 Materials, Supplies, and other Overhead Students participating in this course will be highly encouraged to purchase a domain name and maintain an account at a domain name registry. The cost of this commitment is approximately $10. Access to a computer with an Internet connection outside of class time is required for this course. A USB thumb drive or access to cloud storage is required for this course. A USB thumb drive can be purchased from the campus bookstore for less than $10. Methods of Presentation Meetings: Twice per week. Lecture and demos: 2 hours per week. Lab hours: 2 hours per week. Academic Policies This course observes, abides, and enforces all academic policies set forth by Los Angeles City College and the Visual and Media Arts Department. This includes all topics including but not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collaboration, academic integrity, attendance, in-class conduct, etiquette towards peers, recordings, and being filmed or recorded. Students enrolled in this course agree to know and be responsible for following all said policies as set forth by Los Angeles City College and the Visual and Media Arts Department.
7 Course Grading Class attendance: 10% Critique Participation: 10% Assignments: 50% Projects: 30% Extra credit is available and is announced as available. Work Grading Work must be submitted on time in order to receive a grade. If work cannot be submitted on time, arrangements must be negotiated with instructor at least 48 hours prior to due date. All late work receives an automatic deduction of 8%. All assignments and projects, when assigned, describe minimum and basic requirements, as well as criteria for performance assessment. Those descriptions of scope determine grade. Work is graded according to the following scale: A - Work exceeds all stated requirements - Workmanship is excellent - Based on a performance assessment of 90%-100% B - Work fulfills all stated requirements - Workmanship is good - Based on a performance assessment of 80%-89%
8 C - Work fulfills basic standard of requirements - Workmanship is satisfactory - Based on a performance assessment of 70%-79% D - Work does not fulfill basic standard requirements - Workmanship needs improvement - Based on a performance assessment of 60%-69% F - Work does not fulfill minimum standard requirements - Workmanship needs significant improvement - Based on a performance assessment of below 60% P - Equivalent to C or better Plagiarism or obviously unoriginal work is grounds for automatic grade of F. Course Addenda The following is important course addenda from Los Angeles City College. Units/Transferability Transferrable to CSU Prerequisites/Co-requisites/Advisories Prerequisite: Art 639 No Corequisites. No Advisories. Course Student Learning Outcomes SLO 1: Students will create unique design work using vector and raster graphic software applications in conjunction with web design software. SLO 2: Students will design and create work that deals specifically with the creation of basic layouts using both vector and raster graphics software applications as applied to web sites.
9 Grading Scale or Criteria F - Failing P - Pass; at least equivalent to a C grade or better NP - Not Pass; equal to D or F grade A - Excellent B - Good C - Satisfactory D - Less than satisfactory Drop and Repeats Effective July 1, 2012 students are allowed three (3) attempts to pass a single class within the Los Angeles Community College District. If a student gets a W, D, F, or NP as a grade in a class, that counts as an attempt. If you think you will not be able to complete this course with a C or better, please drop by the due date. For all important dates make sure to visit dates.html Attendance Policy Students who are registered and miss the first time the class meets may lose their right to a place in the class. Whenever students are absent more than 10% of the total meeting days of the class, the instructor may exclude them from class. If the instructor determines that there are no mitigating circumstances that may justify the absences, the instructor may exclude a student from the class. Students are responsible for officially dropping a class that they stop attending.
