Why DHIS2 Academy? To meet rapidly increasing training demand Key component of HISP s regional capacity building and country support model 1 st DHIS 2 Academy (Dar, 2011)
DHIS2 training levels DHIS2 Academy 1. Regional and global DHIS2 Academies: generic, focus on principles and best practices, cross-country sharing, by global and regional trainers. For core teams from countries. In-country training/support 2. In-country support/mentoring (for system admins): Tailored support to DHIS2 core team in a specific country, focus on local challenges and system design, in-country ToTs, typically by regional experts 3. In-country end users: at national, district, facility, and community level, training material tailored to country configuration/system, by in-country trainers and superusers
Academy objectives Train key staff ( the DHIS2 core team ) from each country/organisation in all aspects of DHIS2 Offer a standardised and generic training platform for DHIS2 implementers System admin, configuration, setup, metadata management, project managers, and more - typically not the end users Build relationships across country borders, share experiences, and strengthen DHIS2 community - networking! Regional approach to delivering training Scale globally through regional expert groups
DHIS2 Academy levels Global and regional 2 Advanced topics - build on level 1. Specialization courses. Thematic. Global team of trainers. Open for global attendance (may also be regional) Locations and co-hosts vary. Events managed by UiO. Information use Design and Customisation Tracker Regional 1 Cover all aspects of DHIS2 configuration. Enough to start implementing. 6 days each. Offered by region Managed by regional partners. DHIS2 Fundamentals Online only 0 Quick start to DHIS2. What, why, how. Prerequisite for level 1. Not enough to start an implementation, but 1st step learning DHIS2. Free!
Includes academy numbers up to September 2017

Already conducted: Server administration in Kigali (March-17), and Ghana (June-17) Disease Surveillance in Goa (May-17) and in Dakar (August-17) Community HIS in Oslo (June-17) Level 2 status In progress: Server Administration in India (Jan/Feb-18) Info use: data quality (Jan/Feb-18) System integration and interoperability (2018) Community HIS (Senegal, Mar - 18) Scheduled: Disease Surveillance in Namibia (Nov-17) App Development in Tanzania (Nov-17) Info use: sub-national review (Nov-17) Disease Surveillance in Vietnam (Jan-18) Android implementation (Zim, Feb- 18) Ideas being explored: DHIS2 implementation planning and budgeting Android development Tracker level 2 Design and Customisation level 2 Health program-specific? HIS architectures and data security Other suggestions?
A day in the life my role Level 1 Academies Coordinate with HISP nodes; HISP nodes are ultimately responsible Open registration and create Academy webpages Advise on budget and other logistics Follow up on payments. Experience has shown better responses to payment reminders from Oslo Sponsor participants Market the Academy Facebook, DHIS2 newsletter, blasts
A day in the life my role Level 2 Academies Decide date and venue, in consultation with HISP node supporting the Academy Establish the budget Open registration Accept applicants and follow up on payments Sponsor participants Market the Academy Facebook, DHIS2 newsletter, blasts
Level 2 Info use: Sub-national review Motivation: Little actual use of DHIS2 in decision-making process. Back to health for all - District as key administrative level of primary health care. Not open registration the first time, invited countries in East/Southern Africa: Pre-academy: To prepare national databases for use in the academy, including review of data, indicators, denominator data, and installation of relevant apps Academy: To give participants a thorough understanding of the information and planning cycles as they relate to routine, local, decision making, and to enable participants to support and organize appropriate training for sub-national staff in conducting this. Post-academy: To identify key challenges with national databases and make a plan for addressing this. Work on national databases Need more preparation - and follow-up after academy Tentatively a second academy Spring 2018 (West Africa?)
Level 2 info use: Data quality More focus on making data useful for analysis 1. DQ assessment (DQ tool) 2. DQ improvement (preventive: validation rules etc, post-hoc: data cleaning) 3. Understand impact of design on DQ Output: Make a plan for DQ assessment and procedures, as well as changes to design of HIS Work on national databases Collaboration with Statistics Norway and WHO February 2018, Rwanda?

But behind these cold facts and figures, what is the DHIS2 Online Academy effect ;)?
Strong Need for: DHIS2 Design and customization Course Blended learning organising DHIS2 Fundamentals in-class training session with facilitators Translation of the DHIS2 Fundamentals in French then Portuguese The content for the Online DHIS2 Academies,[...],will help to further scale the capacity strengthening activities. Customized DHIS2 Fundamentals course with local databases Level 2 Academies such as DHIS2 App development course Development of modular/short courses as a complement to onsite academies/trainings
Question for YOU Learning about DHIS2: Do you see on-site academies as a useful event for you to learn more about DHIS2? Would you like to do online academies to learn more about DHIS2? Teaching about DHIS2: Would you like to contribute to training materials for DHIS2 implementers/developers/admins trainings? What types of courses? Would you like to be part of the team(s) facilitating our online courses?
Since you re all here... Do you have any quick feedback about the Experts Academy? What would you like to see next time? What was most memorable about the most recent Academy?
