1 The New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (NZDE) (Electrical) is a Level 6, 240 credit programme. The NZDE (Electrical) has been developed by a national consortium of tertiary providers, in conjunction with industry, to prepare students for a career in the diverse field of civil engineering. A group of developers has worked collaboratively and consultatively to ensure that the qualification meets the needs of key stakeholders. The group comprised representatives from several Industry Training Organisations (ITOs), Tertiary Providers and IPENZ. The newly developed national qualification, the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Electrical Discipline), is New Zealand's standard qualification for engineering technicians. At MIT we offer the NZDE in three specialisations: Computer, Electronics, Power. The Computer Specialisation prepares graduates for work such as computer hardware and software installation and maintenance, network installation and maintenance, and leads to the international recognised CISCO qualification CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate). The Electronics Engineering Specialisation graduate can be involved in a variety of work such as maintenance, production, prototyping and assisting with electronic design. Students completing the Power Specialisation are prepared to enter the workforce in power generation and distribution or factory automation. Interactive learning methods, collaborative learning and teaching methods and embedded student support will be features of this programme. These are intended to accommodate the diverse learning needs of the likely student cohort. CAREERS LENGTH Computer Technician, Networking Technician, Electronics Technician, Electrical Technician 2 years fulltime (5 days per week) Part time study also available ENTRY A minimum total of 48 credits at NCEA level 2 in four subjects including at least 12 credits in mathematics, or equivalent qualifications (eg International Baccalaureate or Cambridge), OR Equivalent credits from appropriate trades training and/or demonstrated skills and experience. AND Minimum of 8 literacy credits at level 1 or higher including 4 reading and 4 writing. Applicants whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 6.0 (with no score below 5.5) or equivalent. AND Be physically capable of completing the practical aspects of the programme Applicants who are unable to meet any of the above criteria, may bridge to the diploma by first completing the Certificate in Electrotechnology. 2 PROGRAMME SUMMARY In the first semester of the programme students complete the following four Level 4 compulsory courses: Engineering Fundamentals Engineering Mathematics 1 Technical Literacy Electrical and Electronic Principles 1 Following these courses the path of study differs depending on the chosen specialisation. To graduate, a student needs to complete 240 credits comprised of: The NZDE common compulsory courses The NZDE (Electrical Discipline) compulsory courses The courses required for the chosen specialisation. Students who graduate with this diploma can: Communicate with the client to determine requirements Analyse engineering problems Develop solutions of high quality consistent with best current practice Demonstrate knowledge of the design and implementation process Use modern tools and efficient development techniques Design rigorous fault finding and testing procedures Work effectively in a team environment Work to deadlines The diploma is a significant feeder programme into the Bachelor of Engineering Technology. This is done through our staircasing philosophy students can enter into the degree programme by having completed the diploma or if they have passed core subjects relevant to the programme.
