3 Program Comparisons Teacher Certification Concentration Prepares students to teach health and physical education to students in the private and/or public schools pre-k thru 12 th grade Graduate with a teaching Certificate With a teaching degree you can be a head coach in the public schools Sport Coaching Concentration Prepares students to work in areas related to fitness, recreation, coaching, health & wellness Settings include: YMCA, fitness clubs, camps, Park & Recreation, early childcare centers, senior centers, Boys and Girls Clubs, after school programs, cruise ships Cannot be a head coach in the public schools 3

6 GACE Program Admission Study Materials Combined Test I, II, III (700) Reading, Mathematics, Writing 1.) A: Cost varies by how many tests you are taking combined test- $128 two tests- $103 single test- $78 Q: How do I find when the test offered? A: The GACE Program Admission Assessment is offered on a continuous basis. To find the next date and location the test will be offered begin the registration process in your account with ETS. Q: How do I register? A: Please visit the link below for instructions Issued a user name and password- will be used each time you login Encouraged to begin with "Introduction to the GACE" section The program is flexible- you can work on specific areas of need or go from beginning to end 2.) A: Reading and Math within 7 days Writing within 28 days Q: When should I take it? A: It is recommended you take it two to three months before your application deadline. A two to three month grace period gives you time before the deadline to take and wait for writing scores twice if needed. Q: I didn"t pass a section, now what? 8 Once Application is Completed Step 1 Office of Academic Assistance (OAA) in the CEHD will: Check to make sure all your application materials are completed Check to make sure you have completed all your area A-F courses Check to make sure you have the 2.50 minimum GPA Send your name and contact information to the HPE Undergraduate Program Coordinator Step 2 HPE Undergraduate Program Coordinator will all applicants Interview about 30 min with one of the HPE faculty Writing Sample we give you a question with the rubric, a laptop, a quiet room, and 1 hour to answer the question HPE faculty make a decision regarding acceptance 8

9 Once the Application is Complete Step 3 Forward that decision to OAA Send out acceptance letters to accepted students Step 4 OAA completes paper work documenting student acceptance into the HPE program OAA enables students to register for classes (Fall and Spring Junior & Senior years) 9

10 After Program Acceptance Teacher Certification Students Only Pre-Service Certificate Students will get an directly from OAA with a link to the website with information to apply for preservice certificate DO NOT IGNORE THESE S This is critical as students can not go into the schools either for observations, practicums or student teaching without this preservice certificate Once completed, turn the forms into OAA and they will upload it to the GAPSC 10

11 Sample Program of Study - Junior Year Teacher Certification Fall courses include KH3010 KH3030/3040 KH3070 KH3080 KH3610 KH3375 Spring Courses Include KH3200 KH3710 KH4280 KH3020 KH3030/3040 Summer Courses Include KH3700 (maymester required) KH 3710 is only offered in the spring. If you drop it or don t take it you are delaying graduation by one year Sport Coaching Fall courses include KH3010 KH3030/3040 KH3070 KH3080 KH375 Elective Spring Courses Include KH3200 KH3710 KH3030/3040 KH4350 KH3635 Summer Courses Include KH3020 KH and 3635 are for sport coaching and electives for all other KH students except teacher certification 11

12 Student Teaching & Internship Placement Junior Year Teacher Certification Student teaching placements are determined by the HPE program coordinator in the Fall of your Junior year. Sport Coaching Attend required internship meeting two semesters prior to the start of your internship Identify possible internship placement(s) Obtain approval from internship supervisor Internship handbook available on KH website under the tab for KH students 12

13 Fall Semester - Senior Year Teacher Certification Fall courses include KH 4510 KH 4520 KH 4530 KH 4540 Block KH 3410 taken with block KH 4650 EXC 4020 There is specific section for HPE students to take this class with KH 4540 Sport Coaching Fall courses include KH 3630 KH 4200 KH3610 Elective Elective These can vary and come from KH or other departments - See catalogue for a list of recommended electives 13

14 Sport Coaching Recognitions There are three options for students to get coaching certifications: Note: these are not teaching certificates but specifically related to coaching and are not options for teacher certification students. KH 3360 Disability Sport and Physical Activity Elective Class Blazesports CARSS level 1 sport coaching certification KH 3060 Performance and Analysis in Disability Sport Elective class American Association of Adapted Sports Programs certification in coaching wheelchair handball, wheelchair basketball & wheelchair football They also offer referee training in these same sports (paid position on Saturdays) KH 3630 Coaching Principles Required Class American Sport Education Program National coaching certification To be eligible for these certifications you have to have completed a test and passed it at the levels required by each organization (approximately 80% or higher). These certifications do not contributed or impact your grade. 14
