Driving Broadband beyond 1 Million Steve Hornung and Neil Jefferies
British Telecommunications plc, Driving Broadband beyond 1 million Current Broadband Platform Status Technology to Extend the platform - Extending DSL reach to 60dB - Extending the Footprint Rural DSLAMs BB Wireless Access BB Satellite Technology to Drive volume up - New Services - Home Networking Fibre in Access Conclusion
British Telecommunications plc, Broadband Platform Current Status UK access network comprises some 5,600 exchanges over all geotypes 1.07m working system 20k added per week. ADSL deployed in 1400 exchanges by 11 June additional exchange by July % of UK customers served from the smallest 3,000 exchanges 2,089 exchanges have less than 1000 total lines Deployment to small exchanges needs a different commercial and technical approach. How to reach the last 13%.
British Telecommunications plc, ADSL Extended Reach (500k) 41dB covered 75% of customers 55dB covers 95% of customers in the exchange 60dB covers 98.6% of customers 41dB Original rule for all ADSL, current for fixed rate ADSL, 3.5km approx 55dB Current rule for rate adaptive ADSL, approx 5.5km 60dB Prospective rule for rate adaptive ADSL approx 6km
British Telecommunications plc, DSL to smaller exchanges Current large DSL platform costs in for large, dense exchanges. Smaller DSLAMs, smaller backhaul required for most exchanges. Pre registration & Partnerships Broadband Britain Toolkit - Subtending - Medium and Small DSLAMS ADSL Exchange Activate
British Telecommunications plc, ADSL Exchange Activate Broadband solution to meet demand from smaller exchanges Different technology - Smaller DSLAM, - low capacity backhaul Alternative business model - Pay in advance for 3 years service on 30 lines - SPs expected to cooperate with subsidy providers Eight trial sites with real customers in 02/03 Product launch at end July 2003
1322 ADSL EXCHANGES = 69% OF POPULATION Red & Amber areas are out of reach in an enabled exchange PARTNERSHIPS Broadband Today Reduced cost solutions Demand led deployment justified by using Pre-registration scheme. Exchange Activate & Satellite Highest demand Lowest demand Density Density British Telecommunications plc,
Broadband Mesh Radio
Why Mesh? PMP networks have many limitations, such as shadowing by buildings British Telecommunications plc,
British Telecommunications plc, Why Mesh? There are three topologies used by fixed wireless access (FWA) systems - Mesh Each customer can forward on other traffic This overcomes many of the limitations of PMP The network can route around obstacles It has the potential to offer higher reliability, higher capacity and lower cost - But will it work? Point-to-point Point-to-Multipoint Mesh
Types of Mesh Radio - Simple Mesh Systems Typically, these are based on wireless LAN technology - With either software only or joint soft/hardware changes to support mesh operation A mesh system can provide reasonable coverage (e.g. 2 km) via a series of small hops (e.g. 500 m) Limited to around 30 customers/network - Multiple networks can be co-located until spectrum is exhausted Data rates are limited by interference between customers - Typically 2-10Mb/s for a network - 500kb/s to 2Mb/s peak per user - Supports any symmetry required e.g. British Telecommunications plc,
Types of Mesh Radio - Directional Mesh Systems Different to simple mesh: - Directional, steerable antenna systems A physical mesh is formed - Traffic is Switched through network Requires complex central management Operates at higher frequencies (>5GHz) 5-10km radius networks with upto 2km hops 100Mb/s+ network throughputs User rates up to 5Mb/s Supports any symmetry required Mesh Radio Node e.g. British Telecommunications plc,
Broadband Satellite
British Telecommunications plc, Hybrid Satellite Internet Intranet PSTN/ISDN 2-way Satellite Internet Intranet
British Telecommunications plc, Why Broadband Satellite? One option to reach the remaining UK customers presently outside of ADSL enabled exchange areas Offers comparable broadband Internet Services and benefits to ADSL BT want to expedite fast Internet access based on tested technology to unserved areas quickly We believe residential high use internet users are looking for a cost effective fast internet options, within unserved areas Supports Broadband Britain
British Telecommunications plc, Satellite benefits Broadband everywhere Broadband now Fast Internet download Always On capability in downstream direction Unobtrusive indoor unit BT IP Stream Satellite
Driving take up Applications and Home Networks
British Telecommunications plc, Four Product Thrusts driving the 21st Century Network - and systems & processes to drive the customer experience Future Voice Future Broadband Portfolio Systems Business Services Mobility and Personalisation New New Products and and Services, 30% 30% lower operating costs
British Telecommunications plc, Beyond 1M end users : Applications evolution Internet Access (Faster/variable!) Video streaming / Broadcast? Home / Teleworking Gaming Home / office networking Derived Voice Communications on the move Video Communications (Multi-media calling) Home monitoring / security/data warehousing On-line security Product packaging
British Telecommunications plc, Beyond 1M end users : Evolutionary Product needs Class of Service (Jitter/Latency/Packet Loss/Error rate) Throughput (Upstream, Downstream, Max/Min/Avg/Burst) Turbo Access Bandwidth (Upstream, Downstream) Admission control Session management Multiple session / SP Selection Multicast Closed User Group capability (VPN) N/W security/availability Billing Managed CPE Call functionality server (Voice / Multi-media)
British Telecommunications plc, Home Networks We need to evolve from this - Internet SP ADSL USB Flat top tariff No QoS or service differentiation
British Telecommunications plc, to this - connect PCs Webpa Home control & white goods using new wires existing wires or wireless connect TV & HiFi adapters Games Consoles PDA MP3 Players & Cameras GSM phones soon via DECT phones traditional telephones home securit & surveillance
Drivers for Fibre
British Telecommunications plc, Drivers for Access beyond ADSL Increasing need for fibre Access Services requiring bandwidths greater than ~2Mb/s - Broadcast or DVD quality video ~ 4-9Mb/s - Bundled delivery of multiple video channels and high speed Internet services - Bundled Services! ~ 5-20+Mb/s - HDTV services - ~19-36 Mb/s(9Mb/s compressed) - HDTV + other services simultaneously >20 Mb/s Demand for high bandwidth and increased symmetry: - Large file transfer, eg. CD music, DVD files, DV video clips etc. - Greater demand for return bandwidth eg. Tele-workers, file sharing (peer to peer working), video telephony/conferencing etc. Local - home/office Internet servers (distributed content) - Wavelength services to larger business customers
