12 Goals Communications and RFID-related technologies Develop mechanism to continuously monitor and communicate between the mobile platform and the central SmartPort data clearinghouse in an authenticated and secure way Develop, implement, and evaluate RFID technology within the trusted corridor 12

Trend Growing demand and use of broadband mobile Internet services Long stays on railways provide revenue opportunity for communications companies and rail provider Broadband Internet access technologies for customers on high speed trains are developing, especially in Europe These commercial systems face many of the same technical challenges Opportunity to Leverage their lessons learned and technologies for this system Reduce deployment cost by leveraging commercial implementations 13

15 Communications technologies for the continuous monitoring Train Environment Tough Electrical environment harsh: Train systems not typically designed to provide clean power for computer and communications systems Computer and communications systems may require an interrupted supply Physical clearance issues for attached antennas High vibration environment May require mechanical isolation Thermally challenging Heat can be a major issue in various Keep maintenance schedules to a minimum Long service life deployment of technology that might only be expected to last a couple of years may not be the best approach, especially if the deployment can only be done during a periodic and infrequent refit cycle. 15

19 Communications technologies for the continuous monitoring Sidetrack systems Pros: Less complicated than satellites Lower delay (better for interactive services) Tunnel coverage becomes possible Antennas inexpensive Cons: Expensive to deploy (many base stations and many links between them) Physical security of sidetrack systems maybe difficult to assure, especially in remote areas (Mexico) Rights of way and site acquisition issues Requires custom system, not a new application for an existing infrastructure 19
