5 What SPs want from a Home Network Last metre connectivity for services increasingly important as connectivity and BW revenues decrease increasingly include AV services, which have QoS requirements Additional revenue for HN associated services e.g. HG management, parental control, managed Firewall, enabler for directly attached services (VoIP) Possibly. QOS Management Troubleshooting To the Service Provider, the HN is primarily a service enabler

6 What SPs do not want from a Home Network Trouble Help-desk calls increased costs in a very marginal business A network dedicated to their own use Alarms Per customer configuration unless there is associated revenue

8 Will SPs manage the Home Network? It is hard to make money out of managing Enterprise LANs The HN environment is much more challenging, and far more price sensitive SP management is likely to focus on the HG itself, and a small number of enddevices end, but not infrastructure devices or the HN as a whole

9 SP Home Network requirements No new wires Ubiquitous coverage throughout the home Minimum guaranteed payload rate much more important than the maximum rate Self install equipment no truck-roll Autodiscovery and configuration Remote management capability Peaceful co-existence between SP and in-home traffic Non proprietary, multi-vendor interoperable equipment Small set of solutions maybe more than one Plan B

13 Extending the Home Network beyond the home The key issue is not what the user wants, but what he is prepared to pay for Technical issues with user-based nomadism Location management Identifying and authenticating the user Device specific presentation transcoding DRM Network QOS at an arbitrary location Session management Billing Session continuity Security So what is the Business case for for nomadism? What is the Business case for automation?

14 DSL Forum HN Activity DSL Forum was originally only about ADSL and Access neither of these is now true Extended into RBN, HN and non ADSL technologies DSL Home WG formed in 2003 Technical and Marketing Working Groups Initial Focus was on auto-configuration and management TR-069 CPE WAN Management Protocol Plus White Papers to demystify Home Networking

16 What needs to be done? Infrastructure Some limited new wiring may be acceptable for the most demanding applications Thin, single or dual pair TP cable with small connectors POF revisited? Powering Universal charger e.g. inductive loop for portable equipment More power efficient portable devices Physical Layer Technologies Need fewer (and better standardisation), not more

True plug and play/autoconfiguration Better remote troubleshooting and fault diagnosis Better network discovery, representation and user interaction Service layer interoperability e.g. SIP signalling stacks Dual management sharing management between the SP and the user Co-existence of in home and SP QOS systems in-home and Network CAC? Self-diagnosis and healing? Business case for nomadism Business case for telemetry and home automation

18 Summary and conclusions Service Providers need Home Networks Already have a partial solution but need significant improvements to get a truly converged, multiservice HN which can be installed, maintained and used by the average customer SP related bodies such as the DSLF and HGI are working on some of these issues The SP and non-sp bodies need to talk more There are many technical, business case and rights management issues with extending the network beyond the home If anything can be done for free by the user, it will be
