3 Speed onto the Internet With demand skyrocketing and competition intensifying, you need a fast, reliable way to deliver a full range of high speed services right to customers premises. Alcatel 7390 LMDS Solutions provide new opportunities for you to vastly increase your subscriber base. In today s world, a network without fast, reliable Internet access is as unthinkable as an office without electricity. Online data networking, which already comprises one-fifth of the world s telecommunications traffic, will account for up to 60 percent of traffic within a few years. The question facing all network operators, then, is how to meet current and future demand for Internet and intranet access in their backbone and access networks. Nowhere is the challenge greater than in the local loop, the last mile link between your point of presence and your customers premises. The customer access portion typically accounts for more than 50 percent of total network investments. But it s not only the most costly part of your network, it s also the least predictable. Potential customers are spread out just about everywhere. That s why you require Internet access solutions which are flexible, scalable and cost-efficient. To avoid tying up capital in unused capacity, you want to match your spending to real customer requirements. Given the complexities that surround integrated voice, data, video and other service offerings for mission-critical commercial applications, it is important for service providers to choose vendors that can address these complexities and work with them to deploy viable and future-proof networks. Service providers are looking for vendors with solutions that lower operating costs and allow them to rapidly increase service penetration and expand market share. Every operator wants speedy return on investment, but the issue is especially critical for new operators, eager to roll out revenue-generating services as quickly as possible. Especially in newly deregulated market environments, time to market is a vital criterion when evaluating Internet access solutions. No single approach can meet all of the challenges of providing Internet access, but wireless systems offer the most flexibility and freedom. Alcatel 7390 LMDS Solutions are ideal for serving large numbers of small and medium-sized businesses, corporate branch offices, small offices/home offices (SOHOs) and residential subscribers in dense urban and suburban locations. You can provide last mile broadband access; voice and data services, including LAN interconnections, IP services and PBX applications; and virtual leased line services. Or whatever combination of these best serves your particular subscriber needs. Alcatel also delivers the expertise and experience needed to provide: full market assessments; service selection; business case analysis; network, service and cell planning; financing; training; and installation and technical support. Alcatel 7390 LMDS broadband wireless access systems can also provide an attractive solution for mobile network operators seeking to launch fixed services while optimizing the interconnection of their mobile base stations and base station controllers in busy downtown areas. What s more, combined fixed and mobile operators can use a single LMDS network to interconnect both customer sites and base stations. 1
4 Take the broad point of view Alcatel 7390 LMDS Solutions represent a major step forward in access networks. Thanks to digital wireless technology, you can provide broadband last mile connections to thousands of subscribers from a single hub. Local The Alcatel 7390 LMDS provides a wireless local infrastructure, using line-of-sight radio links over distances of up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in the 10 GHz frequency band, and up to 5 kilometers (3 miles) with higher frequencies. Multipoint A single radio hub handles full two-way communications for thousands of end users. Distribution The 7390 LMDS will deliver true broadband capacity, at a bit rate of up to 40 Mb/s. Service Multiple voice and data services can be mixed and matched to provide a wide variety of narrowband and broadband communications services. Alcatel 7390 LMDS Solutions are designed to meet your current and future access network requirements Alcatel 7390 LMDS Solutions operate in frequency bands between 10 and 43 GHz. Services include: Wireless local loop for new operators Switched voice, data or mixed voice/data Distributed or centralized architecture Multiservice cross-polarized or monocarrier polarized Virtual leased line (TI/E1 or x 64 kb/s) IP/Ethernet/ATM/frame relay Bandwidth on demand Turn last mile problems into lasting solutions Multiservice. Get the most from your access network by mixing and matching advanced telecommunications (ISDN telephony) and broadband services (leased lines, fast Internet access, high speed data transmission, etc.). 2 Multiple radio solutions. Suitable to all types of allocations: single block, duplex, large spectrum band and small spectrum band. LMDS in regions with heavy rain. The 10 GHz frequency band allows provisioning of LMDS even in heavy rain regions where higher frequencies would be very short range, thus limiting the service only to major cities. LMDS in medium density areas. 10 GHz allows provisioning of LMDS with larger cells, making it applicable to lower density regions where ranges at higher frequencies would make the infrastructure economically unfeasible. The deployment can be made only in the 10 GHz frequency band or by combining 10 GHz with a higher frequency for dense areas. Scalable. Increase network capacity quickly and easily, where and when you need it. High service quality. Broadband wireless offers incumbent service providers a complementary solution to address the requirements for last mile connectivity of data, Internet and voice services, advanced IP services and digital video services over the air. For alternate or emerging carriers (CLECs), broadband wireless eliminates the need to install or lease fiber or copper networks, thereby allowing these carriers to bypass the local market s greatest barrier to entry. Fixed and mobile operators can interconnect both customer sites and cellular base stations using the same fixed broadband wireless system. Local multipoint distribution service: a virtual fiber local access solution LMDS networks provide the capacity, quality and reliability of optic fiber, with none of the easement, right-of-way or construction headaches of hardwired systems. The three components Base Station, Customer Terminal Station and Network Management constitute a star-architecture network which can be configured and reconfigured to meet your current and future access network requirements.
5 ALCATEL 7390 LMDS point-to-multipoint broadband wireless access network NT PABX NT NT NT FRAD NT NT Concentrator Router SYSTEM COMPONENTS Base Station: Each base station consists of an Alcatel 7390 LMDS Digital Base Station (DBS) and an Alcatel 7390 LMDS Radio Base Station (RBS) and serves as a hub for thousands of Alcatel 7390 LMDS Network Terminations (NTs), transparently handling a virtually infinite variety of voice and high speed data services. The base station is connected to the switching and routing platforms via any standard high-capacity transmission link. Terminal Station: Each customer terminal station consists of a small (26 centimeter/10 inch diameter) outdoor solid-state antenna (Alcatel 7390 LMDS Radio Termination) and a simple interface unit (NT). The terminal station is connected to a base station by a line-of-sight digital radio link. Network and Service Management: The network and service management system is a highly integrated open architecture solution for managing multi-technology, multiservice networks on a single platform. It extends the management reach of the operator from the wireline network in an integrated fashion into the broadband wireless access network. Never before has it been possible to provide last mile broadband connections so quickly, so reliably and so economically.
