Abstract Recent years, because of burst of information and regular use of multimedia data over the Internet, people demand a higher effective communication networks with lower price. Driven by the demand, WDM industrial products are gradually used and developed to provide sufficient network capabilities. Compared with TDM technology like SONET/SDH, WDM products are attached to higher bandwidth, higher utilization, more flexibility, more compatibility and more scalability. The innovative new generation of WDM product is Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM). DWDM has capability to transfer more wavelengths in a single optical fiber simultaneously than original WDM. According to the employment range, DWDM industrial products will be categorized into Extended Long Haul, Long Haul, metropolitan and regional networks. In the DWDM industrial products market, Alcatel, Huawei, Cisco Systems Inc and Lucent Technologies are some of the leading players. In this survey, we will describe and compare the particular market-leading products of these bigger roles respectively. 1. Introduction For the rapid growth of Internet and modern communications, fiber optic has been widely used in various kinds of networks in order to transmit information faster as well as more bandwidth. Technologies in optical fiber communication have continuously evolved since late 20 th century. In current communication network infrastructure, the long-haul backbone networks are used optical fiber, as well as some fiber and copper wires are in metro or regional network. Nowadays, although SONET/SDH standards are applied for majority of the fiber networks, WDM based fiber networks are becoming increasingly prevalent. As a Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) technique based standard, SONET/SDH has been widely applied in both backbone and metro networks in global telecom industry. However, it cannot support a high transmit rate due to the limit of TDM and inefficient bandwidth utilization [1]. In 1995, Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) was introduced, which splits light waves into different wavelengths of light beams, and sends these light beams simultaneously in an optical fiber [2]. In traditional technology, a fiber only can carry one specific wavelength. Hence, bandwidth utilization is increased tremendously in WDM. WDM is divided into Coarse WDM (CWDM) and Dense WDM (DWDM) by number of separate wavelengths. In recent years, many systems reach 40 different wavelengths, and 256 wavelengths DWDM product has already published by Alcatel. Furthermore, some lab tests have apparently reached as high as 15,000 wavelengths [1]. In today s global optical communication market, SONET/SDH products are still

taking the first share. Nonetheless, WDM market has been grown from $1.2 billion in 1998 to $8.7 billion in 2005 [3]. Hundreds of optical systems vendors have invested much capital in WDM product development including erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), Multiplexer/DeMultiplexer (Mux/DeMux), Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (OADM) and Optical Cross Connects (OXC). In this survey, we will focus on introduction of DWDM systems industrial products from two aspects which are DWDM Long Haul Terrestrial and DWDM Metropolitan, as well as classify these products by vendors. 2. Industrial Products In this section, we will describe the WDM long haul and metropolitan products. Since various industrial products in WDM systems have provided by hundreds of vendors, we only select four representative products from four famous vendors who are Alcatel, Huawei, Cisco Systems Inc and Lucent Tech. 2.1 Dense Wave Division Multiplexers Long Haul Terrestrial Long haul DWDM systems are applied in core bandbone transmission network such as regional or national network. The market is shared by Alcatel -1626/1686WM, Cisco Systems ONS 15800/15801/15808, Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 7200/7300/7600, Lucent Technologies WaveStar OLS Series/LambdaXtreme, Nortel Opitcal LH 1600/4000, Huawei Technologies - OptiX BWS 1600G and Tellab 6370/7200 etc. In this survey, the products from first market sharing - Alcatel and new rapid growing Chinese company Huawei Technologies will be detailedly depicted Alcatel 1686 WM Wavelength Multiplexer 32-channel DWDM System By investigation report from Infonetics, Alcatel ranked in the first in global optical equipment market share in We select a classical product - Alcatel 1686 Wavelength Multiplexer (WM) for this survey. It is a 32-channel DWDM system which provides a scalable and cost-effective solution for long haul (up to 800 km) applications [4]. It can be constructed optical terminal multiplexers for point to point networks, and optical add/drop multiplexers (OADM) for multi-point to multi-point networks. This system is composed by two terminal stations and some line stations. The line station can be amplifier or OADM. Its Mux/DeMux can combine up to 32 wavelengths for one fiber. Its different synchronous (STM-16, STM-64) and asynchronous optical interfaces allow access from all major kinds of bit rate and traffic (100Mbps to 1.25Gbps, 2.5Gbps and 10Gpbs). Moreover, this system can

directly connect to SDH, IP, ATM equipment by 4 x 2.5 Gbps TDM concentrator in order to increase the capacity of an existing network. Especially, the out-of-band forward-error correction code implemented in synchronous interfaces and a flat EDFA permits cost-efficient enhanced optical performances. Alcatel 1686 WM can be locally or centrally managed by using Alcatel PRC Manager [5], via its F or Q interface. Furthermore, a dedicated supervisory channel is used for managing amplifiers and remote terminal. The system is designed in two modular blocks, one is terminal station and the other one is line station. Terminal Station The terminal station (figure 1) provides multiplexing and demultiplexing functions. There are two multiplexing and demultiplexing boards to combine and split 16 wavelengths per unit. And an expansion unit is used to couple two 16 channel signals into the 32 wavelengths signal in one direction and to divide them in the opposite one. Controller board includes F and Q interface for management the equipment. An auxiliary provides auxiliary data channel. Two amplifiers uses as boosters in one direction and preamplifier uses in another direction. Finally, two power-supply units called converter are used to provide power. Terminal Station Layout Mux Demux Booster Pre Mux Demux Expansion Aux Controller Converter Converter Figure 1 Terminal Station Layout Line Station Figure 2 shows the line station layout which provides optical amplifying functions. There are two optical line amplifier boards per station, each of them for one direction. Additionally, two optical add/drop multiplexers are to add or drop eight wavelengths per direction. It also includes an auxiliary, a controller and two power suppliers that offer the same functions as they are in terminal station.

OptiX BWS 1600G DWDM system [6] is one of her newly DWDM Ultra-long haul (ULH) system which already widely implemented in the world, such as India, France, China, Russia and so on. In recent years, Raman amplifier, REG and SDH with EDFA solutions have been implemented in ULH. However, OptiX BWS 1600G provides a simpler, more flexible and lower-cost-alternative solution for ultra-long haul transport which is up to 4000 km without Raman amplifier by Huawei s SuperWDM technology [7]. Figure 3 shows the architecture of Huawei ULH solutions by 1600G. The traditional EDFA reduces much cost than Raman amplifier. On the other hand, Raman amplification solutions can also implement in this system. Figure 3 Architecture of Huawei ULH solutions [8] Mux/DeMux, booster/line amplifier and OADM are designed in modular structure. The Mux/DeMux in this system may combine from 40 to 160 wavelengths for one fiber. Each wavelength can support maximal 10Gbps bit rate, hence, the total bit rate is from 400Gbps to 1600Gbps in one fiber. Furthermore, it is accessible to STM-1/OC-1 to STM-64/OC-192, SDH/SONET, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet

signals from 34Mbps to 2.5Gbps [8]. For each OADM station, it can add or drop from 2 to 40 channels in order to enhance its scalability. OptiX BWS 1600G system can be managed by OptiX imanager from local or remote terminal. The imanager is designed in conformity with the ITU-T M.3000, G.774 and G.784 recommendation and with the TMN frame structure [9]. 2.2 Metropolitan Dense Wave Division Multiplexers Because of increasing demands and diversity of traffic of today s networks, DWDM technology, which was only applied in core backbone before, is beginning to utilize on medium transmission network such as metropolitan or access networks. Since the long haul DWDM technology has already performed wonderful utilization, now the focus is shifting to the metropolitan networks with the purpose of providing lower price and higher efficient networking to end-users. Currently, this market is shared by Alcatel 1696, Cisco Systems ONS 15252/15530/15540/15454 MSTP, Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 7500, Lucent Technologies Metropolis EON/WSM, Nortel Opitcal Metro 5200, Tellab 7100 etc. We will focus on Cisco ONS MSTP and Lucent Metropolis EON Cisco ONS Multiservice Transport Platform (MSTP) Recently, Cisco is one of the biggest roles in the global communication market. In the metropolitan and regional optical networks field, Cisco ONS MSTP has established its rank as the market leader. As one of the core components of Cisco s Complete Optical Multiservice Edge and Transport (COMET) infrastructure, Cisco ONS MSTP [11] is designed to provide Multiservice via metro DWDM. This system has characteristics including wide service interface mix, service transparency, flexible topology, and simplified operations. For wide service interface mix, unlike long-haul networks, metropolitan and access networks require the support for a diversity of service interfaces. The Cisco ONS MSTP has the capabilities to aggregate SONET/SDH with other services, such as low rate services, including OC-3/STM-1, OC-12/STM-4, OC-48/STM-16 and OC-192/STM-64, data services, storage services and video services.

Figure 4. ONS metro networks topology [11] For service transparency, The Cisco ONS MSTP has the capability to combine DWDM transmission with multiservice aggregation, wavelength aggregation, and wavelength transport in a single platform to optimize network costs for any mix of service types. For Topology flexibility, traditional solutions were optimized for point-to-point transmission, while the Cisco ONS MSTP can be reconfigured and support any metro or regional DWDM topology, such as Linear point-to-point, open ring and closed ring. The ultimate topology flexibility is achieved through reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM). The Cisco ONS MSTP with ROADM provides zero to 32 channels of pass through or add/drop, A-Z wavelength provisioning, and full real-time power monitoring of each individual wavelength. For simplified operations, Plug and play card architecture of the Cisco ONS MSTP makes complete flexibility in configuring DWDM network elements possible. And the use of ROADMs reduces complexity of operations and provides ultimate network flexibility. In addition to those wonderful hardware characteristics, Cisco also has developed powerful software to automatic configuring, controlling, or monitoring hardware. The hardware and software are combined together to generate a complete platform, which help customers to achieve lower costs, higher performance and easier operations Lucent Metropolis Enhanced Optical Networking (EON) Lucent is another powerful competitor in metropolitan Optical Network products field. Lucent Metropolis Enhanced Optical Networking (EON) is Lucent s star product. It can handle up to 320 Gigabits data using 32-wavelength DWDM. Lucent s Metropolis series products are divided into three categories, Metropolis EON for service provider, for enterprise and for government.

Figure 5. Architecture of Lucent s Metropolis EON[12] The Metropolis EON can handle diversity of traffics of access, metro and regional area networks, such as SONET/SDH, Ethernet, ATM, and video transport, using a single platform simultaneously. The metropolis EON can support both ring and point-to-point topologies. EON applies plug and play architecture to support in-service upgrade and support service flexible future growth and necessary scalability to help satisfy future traffic requirement. The in-service upgrade capability up to 32 protected (or 64 unprotected) wavelengths will reduce unnecessary downtime when enhance the services capabilities. One feature of Metropolis EON is allowing Lucent s TDM equipments (SONET/SDH) to build direct connection with EON equipments to eliminate the requirement of both transponders and amplifiers. Such feature enable user to reduce capital expenses. The special feature of Metropolis EON is that EON offers a wide range of perwavelength protection options for increased Service Level Agreement (SLA) [12] differentiation. Through optional per-wavelength protection feature, the Metropolis EON enables the protected ring architectures of access, metro or regional networks. The Metropolis EON also support a wide range of services, such as low-cost storage and low-cost Ethernet solutions, which provide end to end managed Ethernet service and managed wavelength service. Conclusion In this survey, we have described the market-leading WDM industrial products depending on their vendors. We categorize the DWDM, the latest generation of WDM

industrial products, into Long haul and metropolitan DWDM according to their employment range. For Long Haul DWDM, Alcatel 1686 WM and Huawei OptiX BWS 1600G DWDM are surveyed. For metropolitan DWDM, Cisco ONS MSTP and Lucent Metropolis Enhanced Optical Networking (EON) are chosed. Today s research and development of WDM industrial products mainly focus on dense of wavelength for single fiber, downward compatibility, flexibility and scalability of network structure, ease of operation and deployment, and wide range of services complied into a single platform. Nowadays, most of the leading vendors are passionate to provide whole solutions to particular scenarios rather than just promote the equipments. Following the gradually mature technology of WDM equipments, the competitions among different vendors are more related to their customer service and technology support.
