High Speed Broadband the options Presented by David Cook
Before we begin Consider the following - What broadband speeds are you already receiving? - Are the current speeds adequate for your business? - What benefits will high speed broadband bring to your business?
Broadband An ally to your business or a nemesis?
Agenda Understanding broadband technologies Typical business usages of highspeed broadband How to discover which broadband technologies are available in your area Introducing Government grants to boost your broadband How to apply for a connection voucher Hints and tips on how to influence grant applications
Understanding Broadband Technologies
What Type Of Internet User Are You? Light User: Check s Surf the Web Occasionally Speeds of Around 3-10mb/s Would be ok Medium User: Small Business Work Online Stream Video On The Web A Few Hours Per Day Speeds of Between 10-20mb/s Heavy User: Business Critical i.e. Online Business Services Such As VOIP Web Site/Take Online Orders Stream A lot Video Content Speeds of mb/s+ Large Number of Employee s
Ethernet/Cable/ADSL If you already have cable TV then you live in an area served by a cable operator. You will need a special modem to run alongside your TV box, and the operator will often bundle the cost of the TV and Broadband connections together in a cost effective package. Copper Connection.
Wireless Wireless broadband is one of the ways in which broadband can be delivered to your PC. This type of broadband requires an antenna to be installed to get connection to the Internet. Wireless broadband is particularly suitable for distributing information between buildings and for homes where access to ADSL or cable broadband is unavailable.
Fiber Broadband FTTC/FTTP Fiber optic technology converts electrical signals carrying data to light and sends the light through transparent glass fibers about the diameter of a human hair. Fiber transmits data at speeds far exceeding current DSL or cable modem speeds, typically by tens or even hundreds of Mbps.
Leased Line Point to point leased lines are just the job if you require dedicated, always-on, fixed bandwidth connectivity between two points; to transport data, internet or voice traffic. Leased lines can be incredibly cost effective, dependent on Business needs and the amount of users.
Satellite Satellite is generally considered to be the last resort for people living in remote areas. It requires the installation of a special satellite dish and modem, and the equipment and line rentals are often extremely expensive.
Typical Speeds ADSL 20mbps Ethernet 30-50mbps FTTC MBPS FTTP MBPS Lease Line 100MBPS+ Satellite 1-20MBPS

Typical Business Usages Of High Speed Broadband
Why do Businesses need High Speed Broadband? Working with and downloading large files. Require high quality video conferencing to make sure you re seeing eye-to-eye Upload web site content Need to share assets and collaborate with colleagues on documents in real time Want to minimise the expense of technology infrastructure by moving to cloud based services for CRM, billing and support Work from home reducing travel times and costs and resulting in you working more efficiently
What are the Benefits to going Superfast? Increasing your profits by offering better services to more satisfied customers Improving your customers experience with quicker, communication and faster filesharing thanks to higher upload and download speeds, especially for large files Reducing software and hardware costs by helping you switch to online data storage solutions (cloud services) Enhancing the way you communicate and collaborate through online video conference and cloud-based information sharing Future-proofing your business with the latest technology to meet your customers needs
How To Check What Broadband Speeds You Are Currently Receiving??
How To Discover What Broadband Technologies Are In Your Area
Broadband In Derbyshire & BT National Rollout We're pressing ahead with the project to bring fibre broadband to a further 88,000 premises across Derbyshire, bringing access to more than 95 per cent of homes and businesses by the end of 2016 Councillor Joan Dixon, our Cabinet Member for Jobs, Economy and Transport
Broadband in Derbyshire Overall around 750,000 metres of fibre optic cable will be laid by BT in Derbyshire and approximately 445 new green street cabinets will be installed at roadsides throughout the county.
How to tell? Use the BT Openreach Postcode Checker This will show if your exchange is enabled for fibre broadband
Derbyshire County Council & BT Digital Derbyshire is delivering the county's biggest ever broadband transformation Areas more remote with less density Covering areas that are not covered by the BT Digital Rollout (Superfast Britain)
