Network Evolution & Convergence By Huiling Zhao Chairperson of Network & Switching Technical Committee, CCSA May. 2008

Analysis of Network Evolution Demands Service View Customer demands Service area Product system Industry chain Benchmark View Demands of Network Evolution Technology View IT technology IP technology Access and transport technology Operation View Network resource and service capabilities Network architecture Technology applications

Service View & Technology View Customers demand for diversified services. Service focus shifts from the basic communication service to the converged information services (Internet, video, ICT and FMC). Seamless services experience convergence services IT technology IT technology IP technology IP technology Web2.0SOA/open API Data convergence Distributed architecture Router trunking,40g/100g high-performance interface IPv6 Access Access and and transport technology technology PON VDSL2 Wimax/WiFi ASON 40G WDM

Data Convergence Data convergence helps the fast deployment of services and provision of converged services. Data convergence is realized through centralized database in the future telecom network. Case study: -SkypeMSN and Google MSN Centralized deployment of login servers ( data convergence for user registration information) Distributed deployment of data servers (notification server, window server) Skype Centralized deployment of login servers ( data convergence for user registration information) Distributed deployment of super nodes( routing function) Google Cluster, a distributed computer system( multiple PCs, with strong scalability; low cost of hardware )

Network Architecture Study IT-based services and IP-based bearer are the trends of network evolution We need to re-consider the network architecture in line with the development of multiple information services so as to support the provision of integrated information services. Previous NGN Layers PSTN PHS MSC Soft switch Service layer Control layer ITU-T NGN System Service network (service capability, service control and service management platform, etc.) Future telecom Network Layers Service network 3G WiMAX IP bearer Transmission layer ADSL Access layer Base network (IP bearer, transmission and access) Base network

Service Network Service network is the one based on the base network and composed of various service platforms. The service network can either directly provide core applications or open its service capability for self operation or third party applications. Service network is composed of service management, service capability, capability opening, data management and service control, with its overall architecture shown below: Service network is composed of multiple service platforms and should be treated in a systematic way. Reference architecturesdpitu-t Service Network1 Service capability Service control Opening of service capability User data Provide opening capability interface and CP/SP access voice, messages, video, resources and information Management of users service data (not only the users of core networks) Functions such as registration, certification and authentication, service triggering, signaling interoperation, session control and control of media resources Service management Standardized configuration, deployment and management of service capability platform; CP/SP management

Designing Principles of Service Network customer-centric Improve customer experience (unified portal, unified customer end, unified certification and authentication, unified re-charging and payment ) Designing principles Designing principles Design Principles For Service network Overall Architecture Of Service Network Technology Development Of Service Network Four Principles : unified, open, horizontal and converged Unified Unified user data management Unified service management Unified CP/SP service access Unified payment/recharging, content center, etc. Horizontal Define and build cross-network and cross-terminal service capability which can be shared and re-used; build diversified applications based on universal service capability portfolio. Open Service capability open to third party Service capability open to users Converged FMC (including service capability, service management and control, user service data, etc.) Internet/Telecom Service network is composed of service platforms. Design of software system determines the network scalability and difficulties in consolidating and renovating the service networks, which influences the realization of unified, open, horizontal and converged service networks.

General Principles of Base Network Design Design Principles Design Idea Design Idea Overall Architecture Of Basic Network Technology Development Of Basic principles IP-based service bearer Dual backbone plane CN2 (high quality VPN )and ChinaNet (public internet access) By 2010, Accelerated replacement of copper with optical cables enables the increase of downlink bandwidth for high-end customers from 20M. Differentiated bearer service Intelligent bearer layer control; Support user-based and servicebased differentiated bearer service; ensure on-demand priority Integrated broadband access Integrated service carrier over broadband access network; Flexible wireline and wireless access, hot spot wireless coverage; Flat network structure Reduce the service bearer layers, simplify the layer structure, improve network efficiency and save network cost; Basic Network Provide end-to-end and high-quality bearer service as required by the user services Increase network capability, broadly use 40G WDM links, and improve the link transport efficiency
