1 Fibre Channel Specialist FC Lab Getting to Know Your SAN Allotted time for this lab: 10 minutes Objective: This exercise is to introduce the lab equipment and methodology that will be used for the course. March 2009 Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation All rights reserved.
2 Before You Begin FC Lab: Getting to Know Your SAN During this course, you will be administering a SAN comprising of at least one (1) server, two (2) Fibre Channel Switches, and at least two (2) Targets. This lab is intended for you to familiarize yourself with your specific Lab setup. 3 1.0 Working with Your Remote SAN (vlab) The SAN that you will be managing is housed in a separate location. For the Lab Exercises, you will be using Remote Desktop to access the Server in your training lab. All applications will be installed on the remote server for training. 1.1 Establish the VPN Connection Before doing any of the vlab exercises in this training or the Certification exam, the VPN connection must be in place. You should have received s regarding downloading and installing the following: VPN Client Software QLogic Global Training Resource CD/ROM Lab Schematic & VPN Profile 1.1.1: Download and install Cisco VPN Client Point your web browser to : Locate the Operating System you will be using for your lab exercises. Win XP Vista should work for all 32 bit Windows installations : Download and install the application 1.1.2: Retrieve Lab Documents : Download your Lab Schematic and VPN Profile by going to: Use the username from qlogictraining.com : Unzip the file. There will be 2 files: 170x.pdf and 170x.pcf. (x=lab number) : Print out the.pdf file. This is your lab schematic. You will use this for every lab exercise : Note where the.vcf file is located. You will import this into the Cisco VPN Client 1.1.3: Import the VPN Profile : Open the Cisco VPN Client software on your workstation. You should have an icon that looks like this: March QLogic Corporation
4 : Click the Import button at the top of the screen : Locate the 170x.pcf file and click Open : Your profile should be loaded 1.1.4: Launch the VPN These steps will need to be completed prior to every lab session : Double-click the 170x profile shown : If prompted, enter the VPN password. This password was sent to you by the QLogic Global Training instructor : Once connected, the window will disappear. If working in a Windows Operating System, a lock will appear in the system tray in the lower right. March QLogic Corporation
5 You are now connected to the QLogic vlab. You will only have access to your server. NOTE: If you are unsuccessful connecting to the vlab at any time, run the checklist in Appendix A. 1.2 Equipment in the SAN Each Lab station SAN will have similar equipment. Refer to your Lab Schematic handout for your exact configuration and IP Addresses. Your SAN will contain the following: Server o Windows 2003 Server o Equipped with dual ported QLx2462 HBA o Drivers/agents are preinstalled One (1) JBOD with a minimum of 3 disk drives One (1) RAID Controller with 4 LUNs Two (2) SANbox 56xx Fibre Channel Switches Various cables and connectors 1.2 SAN Setup Your SAN has already been cabled together. Refer to your Lab Schematic for a graphical layout of the equipment you will be using. Your equipment should be cabled as follows: Port 0 of each HBA is connected to Switch A Port 1 of each HBA is connected to Switch B Channel A of the RAID is connected to Port 5 on Switch A Channel B of the RAID is connected to Port 5 on Switch B Channel A of the JBOD is connected to Port 6 on Switch A Channel B of the JBOD is connected to Port 6 on Switch B Traffic Generator connected to Port 3 of both switches Note: The traffic generators use ONLY each other as initiator & target March QLogic Corporation
6 Testing Connection to the SAN You will now test the connection between your workstation and your remote SAN. The VPN connection must be established at this point. 1. Referring to your Lab Schematic, identify your Lab Server. 2. What is the IP Address of the Server? 3. From a command prompt, use ping to test the connection to the server. 4. Was there a reply from the server? If not, is your VPN running?. Connecting to the Test Server You will now open a remote connection to your vlab server s desktop. You may use Remote Desktop or VNC Viewer. NOTE: VNC Viewer will allow the QLogic Global Training instructor easier access to view your lab operations if you have an issue. Remote Desktop is available with any Windows system. If you would like to install VNC, you can locate installation files here: 5. Launch the RDC or VNC application via the shortcut on your desktop. 6. Enter the IP Address of the Remote lab Server. (Username and Password are shown below) Example IP Address and RDC 7. Click the Connect Button. 8. After a few moments, a window should open showing you a remote view of your Test Server. If needed, log in to the server using the following UserID and Password: a. UserID: Administrator b. Password: qlogic March QLogic Corporation
7 9. After logging in successfully, you will see your lab Server s desktop. 10. Change the date and time of the Remote Desktop to your local time. Server Date & Time 1. Set the date and time on your lab server to the correct local time and time zone. This will be important for the rest of the lab exercises. You have successfully connected to your vlab server. All further lab exercises will assume these steps are completed. Please read the very important note below. Very Important Note: You may be asked to reboot your remote server during the lab exercises. Make sure you choose the server s reboot/restart. If you select Shut Down there WILL NOT BE A WAY to restart the server manually in a timely manner and you will disqualify yourself from certification! You have completed the lab exercise. Notify the instructor that you are done. March QLogic Corporation
8 Appendix A: VPN Troubleshooting If you cannot connect to the vlab, check the following: 1. Do you have access to the Internet? 2. Open a command prompt and enter: ping a. If no ping response, double-check your internet connection b. If ping, continue. 3. Note the message you receive when attempting to connect and notify your QLogic Global Training instructor.
