2 Introduction RemoteMRC (Remote Magnetic Resonance Center) is designed to make the process of connecting to an NMR workstation via VNC easier and more accessible to those with limited command line exposure. A remote connection will allow you to use VnmrJ from your personal computer to process NMR data. VNC will not allow remote printing or file transfer. If you print, your printouts will be sent to the printer in KNCL 119. You can save to your home folder and access those files on your PC by mounting your NMR home folder on your computer. 3 Connecting to a Workstation 1. Upon opening RemoteMRC, you will be presented with one of two dialogs depending on your setup. If you have more than two displays, main monitor will correspond to display 1 and external monitor to display 2. Single Monitor Dual Monitor 3

4 TIP All fields include help text that is displayed when you hover your cursor over them. You can use this to determine which monitor or workstation you would prefer to use. 2. Select a workstation. If the default workstation (KNCL ) is not connecting, you can try the second (KNCL ). Both workstations contain the same software and are running the latest versions of VnmrJ and TopSpin. 4

5 3. Click the Connect button. After clicking, the button will disappear and display the status to prevent accidentally clicking the button more than once. Once connected to the workstation, the status will read DO NOT CLOSE THIS WINDOW. and the VNC viewer will open in full screen mode. IMPORTANT! DO NOT CLOSE RemoteMRC AFTER CONNECTING! This will result in an improper shutdown of the VNC server and could affect the performance of the workstation. You may minimize RemoteMRC while using the Linux desktop. 5

6 4. When the VNC viewer opens, VnmrJ will automatically launch and display the login screen. If you are connecting to use TopSpin, login and then minimize VnmrJ. An icon to start TopSpin is located on the desktop. 5. After logging in, you will see the following screen once VnmrJ is fully loaded and ready to process data. 6

7 6. You can toggle full screen mode by pressing F8 to open the VNC drop menu, or use the drop down menu located at the top center of the screen. 7. When you are finished, logout of VnmrJ by pressing the logout button within VnmrJ or entering done on the command line. 8. Close the VNC Viewer program with the VNC drop menu (F8) or top menu. 9. RemoteMRC will close your VNC session and enable the Connect button. Once you see the Connect button, you may reconnect or close RemoteMRC. 7 Back to Table of Contents

8 Connecting to a Workstation Terminal 1. Select a workstation. 2. Select checkbox "Open Terminal Session" and click the Connect button. 3. A terminal window of the connected workstation will pop up. Login with your NMR username and password. If you see the prompt, Input display server name: just press enter. 4. When finished, close the remote terminal window or enter the command: exit WHY USE A TERMINAL SESSION? A terminal session can be used to change your NMR password. At the > prompt, type passwd and follow the instructions. Back to Table of Contents 8

9 Troubleshooting If you receive this message when using RemoteMRC, consult the following pages to help resolve the issue. If you are still having issues, contact the MRC staff at 9

10 Outside of Network Connections to the NMR workstations must be made while connected to the University of Akron network. Connect either through ethernet or through the "Roo-Secure" WiFi network. "UAGuest", "ConnectAkron", or other networks will not work. You will need to connect UAkron via VPN to use this program off campus. Directions for setting up VPN can be found on the MRC website. If you are connected via ethernet, Roo-Secure, or VPN and still see this error, it is most likely that the workstation is offline or its IP address has changed. Please contact the MRC staff for an updated version of RemoteMRC. Back to Table of Contents 10

11 Gray Screen with White Prompt after Connecting It may occur that when you connect to a workstation, you are presented with a gray screen and a white terminal window as seen above. To fix this problem, close the VNC viewer program. Wait until the Connect button reappears in the RemoteMRC window. Then select the checkbox "Fix Workstation Gray Screen" and click the "Connect" button. This should result in a normal desktop view. If you have problems, contact the MRC staff. 11 Back to Table of Contents

12 Status Frozen on Step [ ] If the network or VPN connection is lost while RemoteMRC is attempting to setup the connection, the status may become frozen on the step it lost the connection. Verify that the internet connection has not been lost. Restart RemoteMRC and try again. If you are still having this issue, contact the MRC staff for support. Back to Table of Contents 12
