PV Breaker Connecting to the Internet The LGate 120 requires a network connection to communicate. The cell modem is the primary method of communication; if there is no cellular reception or using the cell modem is not an option, then use the secondary method, installing an Ethernet cable. Preferred Connection Method - Cell Modem The LGate 120 comes installed with a cell modem. No additional configuration is necessary for this method. Note: Store the unused Ethernet cable inside the meter box with the coupler left on. Secondary Connection Method - Ethernet Cable Connect the LGate to a DHCP router with a CAT5 Ethernet cable, as shown below. Make sure this connection is continuous (i.e. the router is not regularly turned off). Note: If using the Ethernet connection, some additional configuration is required (see the Enabling the Ethernet Connection section on page 8 for more information). Note: Run the Ethernet cable in a separate conduit from power conductors, at least 1 Note: The LGate can hold up to months of data without an internet connection. Please ensure that the unit does not lose an internet connection for longer than 1.5 months to ensure that no data is lost. Note: When installing the meter in the meter base and securing the meter base cover, avoid pinching the RS485 / Modbus Connection and Ethernet Connection wires. 5
Verifying Installation Verify proper installation of the LGate 120 using the steps below. The correct LED screen configuration is marked with a symbol. 1. Internet Connection The phone icon on the LED screen indicates the network connection of the LGate 120. Solid phone icon: The last data packet was sent successfully. Blinking phone icon: 1. Blinking quickly: The last data packet was not sent successfully but the cellular signal strength (if applicable) is strong. 2. Blinking slowly: The last data packet was not sent successfully and the cellular signal strength (if applicable) is weak. No phone icon: The LGate 120 is not connected to the network. For an Ethernet cable connection, double-check the pin-out on the Ethernet cable (see the FAQ section on page 31 for more information). For a cell modem connection, contact technical support to troubleshoot. Note: After setting Cell mode to false, the phone icon will indicate network connectivity on the Local Area Network. 1. Blinking phone icon : The LGate has been assigned an IP address by the local router. 2. Solid phone icon : LGate is connected and sending data to the web server. 2. RS485 / Modbus Connection The switch icon indicates if any RS485 / Modbus devices are connected. If unsure whether inverter direct monitoring has been purchased for this project, contact your company, lease provider, or program admin. Switch icon is on: All external devices are communicating correctly (comm 1 or 2). Switch icon is off: At least one of the external devices is not communicating OR the LGate is not configured for external devices. Verify that all RS485 / Modbus connections are wired and terminated correctly and that the external devices are addressed accordingly. 6
Accessing Data on the Device Every LGate 120 device comes loaded with updated software, which provides: More secure data transfer to SolarOS; and The ability to log into the LGate with a laptop to view configuration settings. Logging into the LGate 1. Reset the LGate 120 by turning off the AC disconnect and breaker to the LGate for 30 seconds, then back on again. 2. Connect the LGate 120 directly to a laptop using the LGate s Ethernet cable. 3. In a web browser, enter in the address bar and select Enter A (see below). 4. Use the password B networkconfig and select the Login button to enter the password- protected menu (see below). A B 7
Navigating the Password-Protected Menu Once logged into the LGate 120, you can view the following information: 1. Basic information about the LGate: IP address, firmware type, and MAC ID A (see below) 2. All devices sending data and their instantaneous data readings (see below) 3. Network settings: cell C modem status, static IP address, proxy server, and B B A C Enabling the Ethernet Connection The LGate 120 comes preconfigured for a cellular connection. If the cellular option is not possible, enable the Ethernet Connection by selecting false in the Cell Mode drop-down menu and the Save Configuration button. Selecting true (the default value) in the Cell Mode drop-down menu enables the cellular connection. 8
Setting a Static IP Address The LGate can be configured for either a dynamic (DHCP) or static IP address (on a LAN connection only). A dynamic IP address allows the router to assign the LGate 120 an IP address automatically. If using the cell modem, the LGate can only use a dynamic IP address. A static IP address is a set IP address, used primarily for secured networks. This option is only available for LAN connections. A. To enable the dynamic IP address, select false in the Cell Mode drop-down list and Enabled (default value) in the DHCP Mode drop-down list in the Network Settings B. To configure the static IP address: 1. Select false in the Cell Mode drop-down list and Disabled in the DHCP Mode dropdown list in the Network Settings section A (see below). 2. 10 Inverter Direct Monitoring Inverter direct monitoring is a monitoring feature that some companies purchase in addition to the core monitoring package. This feature should only be installed if it has been ordered for this particular project. If you are unsure if inverter direct monitoring has been purchased for this project, contact your company, lease provider, or program administrator. Best Practices for All Inverter Direct Installations Use shielded twisted pair cable for all communication lines; using unshielded cable will cause communication issues. Crimp all RS485 / Modbus wires outside of the meter base (i.e. in a junction box). Use one pair of twisted pair wires when wiring the RS485 / Modbus wires to the first inverter and from one inverter to the next in the daisy chain. This does not apply to Fronius inverters. (Note: The ground wire can come from any other twisted pair wire in the same cable) Limit unshielded portions of shielded cable to 1 at terminals. Shielded cable should not extend greater than 300 feet between the LGate and the first inverter, or between inverters. Run communication lines at least 1 foot away and in separate conduit from AC and DC power lines. 31 LGate 120 3GY FAQ 1. What is shielded twisted pair cable? 2. How should the LGate 120 be connected to the internet when not using the cell modem? 3. What are the minimum requirements for internet access when not using the cell modem? 4. How do I set up a non-dhcp network connection? 1. What is shielded twisted pair cable? Locus Energy requires using shielded twisted pair cable for all RS485 and Modbus communication lines; shielded CAT5e cable is recommended. Using non-shielded wires will potentially cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues. Shield (drain) wire 4 Twisted pairs Shielding Shielded Twisted Pair Cable 2. How should the LGate 120 be connected to the internet when not using the cell modem? Most Local Area Network (LAN) connections are set up in one of two ways: Internet Modem Router LGate Connects the home network to the internet. It connects directly into the wall jack & has only one Ethernet port. Assigns an IP address & directs data to each device on the network. It is usually next to or on top of the modem. Provides extra Ethernet ports to additional devices. It only provides an extra physical connection point. Internet Modem Router Switch LGate 31
3. What are the minimum requirements for internet access when not using the cell modem? Continuous high-speed internet access (ex: DSL, cable, satellite) - dial-up will not work Dynamic IP (DHCP) network (see Non-DHCP Network Connections section below for alternatives) TCP port 80 open outbound with access to the primary DNS server, or port 443 for secure networks RJ-45 Ethernet connection 4. How do I set up a non-dhcp network connection? If the local network does not support open dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP), either: A. Assign the LGate a DHCP reservation on the local network Contact the local network provider or network administrator and ask for a DHCP reservation, or dynamic reservation, for the MAC ID of the LGate; also confirm that Port 80 is open outbound. B. Configure the LGate with a static IP address See page 10 for information on how to set the static IP address on the LGate
5. How do I create an Ethernet cable? 8P8C connectors, or RJ45 heads, can be used to terminate CAT5 twisted pair cable to create an Ethernet line. The most common termination method for T568B cable is shown below and applies to both ends of the cable. T568B Pin Placement (clip facing toward page) 1 Orange-white 2 3 Orange 4 5 Green-white Blue Note: Ensure that wires reach the tip of the RJ45 head before crimping. It is not necessary to strip the wires. Ethernet Lights Locus Energy recommends using a CAT5 tester to make sure the Ethernet cable is live. Also check the Ethernet lights where the cable is plugged into the router or switch - both should be on or flashing (see image at right). 33
