2 Quartet (page 2) Quartet 6-source, 4-zone controller INSTALLATION The Quartet has been designed to be vertically mounted at the rear of an equipment cabinet behind the audio source components. Mounting brackets have been provided for ease of installation. Although the Quartet will remain relatively cool during normal operation, some allowance should be made for ventilation. Once mounted and set-up there should be little need to directly access the Quartet. However, it may be necessary to access the Quartet for servicing or future system upgrades. AUDIO CONNECTIONS The six source inputs (left and right) are located on the left-hand side of the unit. A stereo RCA lead (normally supplied with a source component) should be used to connect the line output of each source component to one of these inputs. In the centre of the case are the four zone outputs. Each of these should be connected to the corresponding A- BUS Modules via Cat5 patch leads to the A-BUS termination plate. A-BUS TERMINATION PLATE All A-BUS cables (DL-8) should be terminated at the main distribution point using wall plate(s) fitted with the corresponding number of Krone brand RJ-45 sockets connected as per the T568A standard. Refer to the A-BUS cabling guide for further details. It is possible for a zone to contain more than one A-BUS Module. The Quartet can power up to two A-BUS Modules per zone. If more than two A-BUS Modules are required the output from one socket can be patched to the expansion input socket of either an A-BUS Allegro 2 or Overture hub. SET-UP The Quartet has only one set of adjustments: input level for each source. Adjustments are made via trim pots accessible through the front plate of the Quartet. The Quartet is shipped with these adjustments set to a nominal position. Once all connections are made to the Quartet the system should be turned on and tested to ensure all sources are playing in each zone. The source level adjustments can be set.

3 Quartet (page 3) SOURCE LEVEL ADJUSTMENTS The input level trim pots are located under a cover in the top left-hand corner of the Quartet. Before making any adjustments listen to each source, making note of their relative volumes. Try to identify the source that has the lowest volume. Once this is done each of the other sources should be adjusted down to match the quietest source using the input level trim pots. Both the left and right input trim pots should be set to the same level. A quick check should now show that each source is of a similar volume when selected. IR ROUTER The Quartet features an in-built IR router that allows the use of numerous source components of the same type (e.g. two same-brand CD players). Each source input has a corresponding IR emitter output socket. Whenever a source is selected in a zone the Quartet will direct all IR control data from that zone only to that source emitter output. To control source components an IR emitter is placed over the front of the IR window on the component s faceplate and plugged into the corresponding IR output. The source component will now only be controlled from the zone(s) currently using the component. It is important that only Andrew s Audio EM-1 emitters are used. NOTE: This is not a lock-out function. Every zone accessing the source component will control it. The IR router function simply means that if two identical source components are used in the system (i.e. CD player 1 and CD player 2) the person listening to CD 1 in zone 3 will not effect the operation of CD 2 being played in zone 1. 4 Quartet (page 4) POWER MANAGEMENT The addition of an Andrew s Audio CB-26 power switcher will allow for the mains power of source components to be turned on and off with the Quartet. The Status output of the Quartet is simply connected to the Trigger input of the CB-26. Whenever any zone in the system is active, the CB-26 will supply mains power to any components powered from its mains socket. When all zones are turned off the CB-26 will turn off power to these components. EXPANSION If more than four zones are required then two or more Quartets can be linked together to achieve the number of zones required. Each link will require six pairs of RCA audio interconnects and one Cat5 patch lead. The first Quartet should be connected and set up as previously detailed. At the right-hand end of the Quartet are the six pairs of audio expansion outputs. These should be connected to the next Quartet using the six audio interconnect leads. NOTE: When using multiple Quartets, the source level adjustments should only be set on the first unit. Subsequent Quartets should be left set to the factory default. All control data between the multiple units is conveyed by the Cat5 patch lead including IR signals for the source components. Connect the Cat5 patch lead from the either Data socket of the first Quartet to either Data socket of the next Quartet, etc. The IR emitters and the Status output should always be connected to the first Quartet only. 5 Quartet (page 5) HOME THEATRE The expansion outputs of the Quartet can also be used to share source components with a home theatre amplifier. Simply connect the expansion outputs of the last Quartet to the corresponding inputs of the home theatre amplifier. Video and digital audio outputs of the source components should be directly connected to the home theatre amplifier, bypassing the Quartet altogether. If the home theatre amplifier is out of sight in the home theatre, an Andrew s Audio CB-64 IR connecting block and an Andrew s Audio IR receiver can be used to allow for remote control functions of both the home theatre amplifier and the common source components. The CB-64 has terminations for the IR receiver and a dedicated IR emitter for the home theatre amplifier. Power for the CB-64 is provided by the 12-volt accessory output of the Quartet. A Cat5 patch lead is used to send IR data to the common source components via either Data port of the Quartet. NOTE: IR data from the CB-64 will bypass the IR router in the Quartet. To prevent operating two units simultaneously it is recommended that only one of any multiple sources be allocated for use in the home theatre. To do this the CB-64 has a six-way DIP switch that allows the installer to set which of the common source components are accessed by the home theatre. To control a source component, turn the relevant switch on. To inhibit the control of a source, turn the relevant switch off. OPERATION Selecting any source input turns on the Quartet. This will activate the Status output of the Quartet. Once the source has been selected, IR commands will only be sent to that source. To turn any zone off, simply send the off command. When the last zone has been turned off the Status output will be deactivated. The all off command will turn every zone and the Status output off. Volume up & down, source select off and global off, are already encoded into each ABR-60 handset.
