4 Advanced RTU Campaign (ARC) Overview National campaign for promotion and support of high-efficiency RTU replacements and retrofits Partnership between DOE, ASHRAE, RILA, and several supporting organizations Launched May 30, 2013 and runs through November Eligible Technologies High-Efficiency Replacements For units > 10 years old CEE Tier 2 and above Advanced Control Retrofits For units < 10 years old and > 7 tons Primarily add variable speed fan control 3

8 RTU Evaluation Process 1. Initial RTU Inventory: gather basic information in the RTU Inventory Spreadsheet 2. Preliminary Screening: Bin RTUs: retrofit, replacement, needs further analysis, or no action 3. Detailed Inventory: Gather additional information in the RTU Inventory Spreadsheet 4. Field Evaluation: Visual-based field evaluation using the RTU Field Evaluation Checklist 5. Analysis: Energy and economic analyses to make the business case and prioritize actions. RTU Incentives Database, RTU Comparison Calculator, 179D DOE Calculator, RTU Sizing Guidance, and ARC Case Studies. 6. Project Planning: Develop a plan for replacements and retrofits. See the list of ARC Supporting Partners for manufacturers and service providers. 7. Procurement: Prepare a procurement specification(s) with quality installation and quality maintenance requirements see Procurement Specifications for guidance. 8. 19 Why Establish a Commercial Building Program 1. 51% of RTUs are over ten years old and are nearing the end of their useful age. 2. The majority of RTUs are poorly maintained. 3. There is a lack of control strategies with operating schedules that cause unnecessary operation. 4. 21 Implement a Process 1. Prioritize the buildings to be audited based on age and maintenance records 2. Conduct a RTU survey condition, age 3. Units that are 10 years and older should be evaluated for replacement 4. Units less than 10 years olds are candidates for retro fits or Retro-Commissioning 5. Provide an Energy Saving Analysis for Return on Investment 6. Based upon the surveys and analysis, schedule the required services to update the systems. 20

23 VFD Retrofits as RTU Efficiency Upgrade Most commercial rooftop HVAC units are equipped with multiple stages of cooling and heating. In most cases, those units only operate at full-load conditions less than 5% of the time. However, the blower fans can only run at full-speed. regardless of the stage of unit operation. Retrofitting those unit blower fans with VFD s represents a significant energy-saving opportunity. 22

24 VFD Retrofits as RTU Efficiency Upgrade the Concept Utilize Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to convert RTU blower fan operation from constant speed to multiple speeds that more closely match the actual load as indicated by the thermostat or control system calls to the unit.
