3 ADCP Issue 1 November 2004 GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Danger: Infrared radiation is invisible and can seriously damage the retina of the eye. Do not look into the ends of any optical fiber. Do not look directly into the optical adapters of the adapter packs. Exposure to invisible laser radiation may result. An optical power meter should be used to verify active fibers. A protective cap or hood MUST be immediately placed over any radiating adapter or optical fiber connector to avoid the potential of dangerous amounts of radiation exposure. This practice also prevents dirt particles from entering the adapter or connector PRODUCT INTRODUCTION General Description The FL1000 wall mount box, shown in Figure 1, is a compact, efficient, fiber optic termination and/or splicing enclosure intended for low fiber count installations. 14 4 UNPACKING THE PRODUCT Unpack and inspect the wall-mount box as follows: 1. Inspect the exterior of the shipping container for evidence of rough handling that may have damaged the contents of the container. 2. Unpack the wall-mount box and check for possible damage. 3. If damage is detected or if parts are missing, file a claim with the commercial carrier and then notify ADC Customer Service. Save damaged carton for inspection by the carrier. 4. For repair, replacement, and warranty information, refer to Section 10 on the last page of this manual. 5. Save the shipping container for use if equipment requires shipment at a future date. 5 MOUNTING THE BOX ON A WALL Note: Before mounting the wall-mount box to the wall, determine which of the available locations will be used to install the cable clamp. If the main clamp mounting location is used, you must install the cable clamp bracket before mounting the box. For an illustration, refer to Figure 15 on page 19. FL1000 wall-mount boxes can be mounted directly to any wall, but ADC recommends that they be mounted, using the #12 woodscrews supplied with the unit, on a 3/4-inch thick plywood panel that is attached to the wall in accordance with local fire code. Use the following procedure. Note: For door swing and other dimensions, refer to diagrams in Section Make sure the location provides room for the door to swing out. Position the box in its assigned location and mark the mounting hole locations. 2. Fasten using the four #12 by 3/4-inch wood screws provided (see Section 3 for mounting hole locations). 6 INSTALLING AND ROUTING PIGTAILS Wall-mount boxes with a termination function have mounting slots for 6pak adapter plates with attached pigtails. The adapters may be of either simplex or duplex type. Note: Adapter plates without attached pigtails may also be installed. To install them, place the adapter plates in the bulkhead in the same way as described below for adapter plates with attached pigtails. Use the following procedure to install and route pigtails. 1. If the 6pak plate has attached pigtails, thread the pigtails through the empty mounting slot and loop the pigtails around the radius limiters in the chassis, as shown in Figure 10 below. Page 14

15 END TAB PIGTAILS SLOT 6PAK PLATE (LOADED) END TAB B Figure 10. Installing a 6Pak Plate with Pigtails in a Wall-Mount Box 2. Align the tabs on the 6pak plate with the notches in the mounting slot (with the letters ADC and two end tabs facing out). 3. Slide the 6pak plate into the slot until it snaps in place. 4. Route the pigtails within the chassis corresponding to the following figures: a. For 12-fiber boxes, refer to Figure 11. b. For 24- and 48-fiber boxes, refer to Figure 12. c. Pigtail Routing in 72-Fiber Termination/Splice Box 7 INSTALLING S AND ROUTING FIBERS The cable must be routed within the chassis in an orderly way that provides maximum protection for the fibers and ease of future maintenance. Use the following procedure to prepare and install the cable. Danger: Infrared radiation is invisible and can seriously damage the retina of the eye. Do not look into the optical bulkhead of an operational transmitter, or into the launching (output) end of an active fiber. A clean, protective cap or hood MUST be immediately placed over any radiating bulkhead receptacle or optical fiber connector to avoid exposure to potentially dangerous amounts of radiation. This practice also helps prevent contamination of connectors and adapters. 1. Determine whether a cable clamp or compression fitting will be used to hold the cable. In general, a cable clamp is intended for a larger diameter cable, but either method can be used for securing the cable. 2. If using a compression fitting (Figure 14): a. Remove the grommets (shipped with the panel). b. Thread the cable stub through the compression fitting components, stacked as shown in Figure 14 (cable not shown). Page 17

18 c. In any order, slide the grommets and compression fitting bracket (with cable inside it) into the slot from which the grommets were removed. d. Install the compression fitting in the locknut. e. Install the bushing and sealing nut in the compression fitting. LOCKNUT COMPRESSION FITTING BRACKET GROMMETS COMPRESSION FITTING B BUSHING SEALING NUT Figure 14. Compression Fitting Components (Cable Not Shown) 3. Strip the outer sheath of the cable to expose the inner subunits, referring to the routing diagrams provided for each box size on the following pages. In general, there should be enough cable length, beyond the breakout, to allow for two full wraps of the cable subunits plus an additional 36 inches (91.44 cm) of individual fibers. The cable sheath should extend about 0.75 inch (1.9 cm) beyond the cable clamp or compression fitting. Page 18

19 4. If using a cable clamp, select from the available clamp mounting locations. The main location is on the back of the box, shown in Figure 15. In addition, there will be one or more mounting locations (depending on box size) to the side of the grommets in the general area shown in Figure 16 on page 20. Note: If the main clamp mounting location is to be used, the clamp bracket should be already in position in the wall box, as instructed in Section 5 on Page 14. If it is not, use the alternate mounting location shown in Figure 16 on page Mount the cable clamp bracket as follows: a. If the cable clamp bracket is already in place in the box, locate the integral bolts of the bracket which will be visible protruding through the box chassis in the location shown in Figure 15. If an alternate location will be used, install the clamp bracket with the integral brackets pointing toward the grommets, as shown in Figure 16 on page 20. b. Sort through the rubber grommets in the kit and find the one that best fits the cable. If the cable is too small to fit snugly in the smallest grommet, build up the cable with tape of a suitable material per local standards. c. Assemble the cable clamp components on the integral bolts in the order shown in the figure and secure with the two nuts provided. 20 CLAMP BRACKET WITH INTEGRAL BOLTS RUBBER GROMMET NUTS (2) A CLAMP YOKES (2) Figure 16. Alternate Cable Clamp Mounting Location 6. If the cable being installed is an OSP cable with a metallic strength member, bond the cable to ground following the instructions for the bonding grounding kit. 7. Route the pigtails within the chassis corresponding to the following figures: a. For 12-fiber termination/splice box, refer to Figure 17. b. For 24- or 48-fiber termination/splice box, refer to Figure 18. c. For 72-fiber termination/splice box, refer to Figure 20 d. For 48- or 144-splice splice box, refer to Figure Tie the fibers down in the location shown using cord lacing. 9. For instruction on installing a splice tray, refer to Subsection 8 on Page 25. Page 20
