C5C Cross-Connect System I N S T A L L A T I O N I N S T R U C T I O N High-Density Connection Blocks 1.0 General Product Information The C5C cross-connect system is comprised of a high-density connection block, a mounting bracket, and accessory products to accommodate specific needs. The block is designed for use in indoor or outdoor applications requiring a high-density, smallfootprint cross-connection system and is available with normally open or normally closed contacts.* The C5C system accommodates solid copper conductors, AWG. * Blocks with red markings have normally open contacts. In/Out are not connected until a protector is installed; therefore, protectors are required. The model number for normally open blocks is C5C-MZO-10-R-G-G-RVA. Blocks with black markings have normally closed contacts. In/Out are connected inside the block regardless of the presence or absence of a protector. The model number for normally closed blocks is C5C-MXO-10-W-G-G-US00RVA. For protected units, both the communication line protector model C5C-ACC-PBETXX and the power pair protector model C5C-ACC-PWER-C-X-XXXX-A feature a voltage breakdown rating of VDC. 2.0 Kit Components Kit components can be ordered separately. (Figure 1) Blocks Numbered pair markers** Disposable C5C installation tool **Representative types of mounting bracket and numbered pair markers are shown in these instructions. Other types available. 3.0 Cautions and Warnings DANGER: To reduce the risk of electrical shock, do not install product during lightning storms, or contact exposed wires or termination points. Removing an installed protector from a normally closed (black marked) block completes the circuit. Removing an installed protector from a normally open (red marked) block opens the circuit. C5C protected units require a locally approved ground connection to the mounting bracket. The C5C cross-connect system is UL listed for indoor/outdoor use when installed in a suitably approved UL listed enclosure including units mounted on or inside a building. To maintain a UL listing, C5C protectors require a 26 AWG fuse-link, installed per locally approved practices. A fuse link should not be confused with circuit protection. Use/follow all applicable safety equipment/practices for installation and operation, including company, local, NEC and ANSI/NFPA Installation Instructions 4.1 Mounting Frame Installation 1. Mount the frame to a vertical surface by inserting screws through the holes in the mounting bracket. Tighten securely. (Figure 2) Note: Some frames have key hole slots. Install four screws in the vertical surface. Slide the frame over the screwheads and tighten them securely. 1 2
Grounded applications typically require a #6 AWG solid copper bond wire installed to the mounting bracket per locally approved practices, tightened to a torque value of 40 inch pounds. Use the bond stud on the bracket, if supplied, for attaching the bond wire. 4.2 Block Installation and Wire Termination Note: The C.O./feeder ports are at the top of the block, and the distribution/jumper ports are at the bottom. 1. Starting at the bottom of the bracket, snap an empty 10-pair C5C block into place on the slots on the bracket. (Figure 3) 2. Route a C.O./feeder wire pair through the opening in the back of the bracket. 3. Feed the wire pair through the wire routing loop on the back of the block. (Figure 4 inset) 4. Feed the wire pair through the wire routing loop on top of the block, and to the desired set of wire ports (numbered on the front of the block). (Figure 4) back of block wire routing loop 3 wire routing loops, top of block 4 5. With the tip wire on the left and the ring wire on the right, align the wires with the ports and let them hang down by at least 2 inches in front of the ports. (Figure 5) NOTE: Do not pull the wires down firmly or trap them in the lower port slots Hold the C5C installation tool with the longer forks up, then push the wire into the block ports as shown, completing the termination. The C.O./feeder ports are at the top of the block, and the distribution/jumper ports are at the bottom. (Figure 6) CAUTION: Be careful to avoid damaging the insulation of other nearby wires when using the tool to push the selected wire into the block port. Note: Remove the severed wire ends to prevent them from interfering in subsequent connections. 6
7. Route the distribution wire pair through the opening in the mounting bracket, and through the wire routing loop on the side of the block closest to the desired port. (Figure 7) wire routing loop, side of block 7 8. With the tip wire on the left and the ring wire on the right, align the wires with the ports and let them extend beyond the ports by at least 2 inches. Holding the wire pair in front of the tip/ring ports, use the C5C installation tool (forks down) to push the wire pair into the corresponding lower ports, completing the termination. (Figure 8) CAUTION: Be careful to avoid damaging the insulation of other nearby wires when using the tool to push the selected wire into the block port. Note: Remove the severed wire ends to prevent them from interfering in subsequent connections When the first block is fully populated with feeder pairs, install a second block on top of the first one. Repeat until the mounting bracket is fully populated with ten 10-pair blocks. (Figure 9) Wire Pair Removal The C5C installation tool includes a small hook that pulls out from the tool handle. Use this hook to pick a wire to remove from its connection, and simply jerk it firmly to disconnect it from the block. (Figure 10) Note: Make sure any other wires are clear of the wire pair being removed. 10
5.0 Accessory Component Installation C5C protectors are offered in two styles: a communications line protector (model number C5C-ACC-PBETXX) and a power pair protector (model number C5C-ACC-PWER-C-X-XXXX-A). The communications line protector is used to protect a single pair telephone connection. The power pair protector is used to protect one independent Telco wireline power input, up to 100VA, distributed between 1 to 3 independent load pairs using C5C 10 pair blocks. Both protectors are gel-sealed against harsh OSP environments. Gas discharge tube technology is utilized by both styles to insure high fault-current management and both are equipped with thermal fail-safe mechanisms to insure safe failure mode during extended AC fault operation. Both offer 350+/- 20VDC rating and impulse spark-over at 100V/microsecond < 750V. 5.1 Installing Circuit Protectors Important: C5C protected units require a locally approved ground to the mounting bracket as described on page 2. 1 Power Pair powering 3 Equipment Pairs Power Pair Protector C5C Blocks Power Load Out Power In Power Load Out Power Load Out Power Pair Protector Communications Line Protectors available in red and black To install circuit protection, follow these steps: Note: Do not install ground bar until all incoming wires are terminated Hold the silver metal ground bar flat on top of the block and push it in until it snaps into place. (Figures 11 and 11a) 11a Install a circuit protector by pushing it into the slot between the feeder and distribution ports, and over the prong of the ground bar above the ports. Push it in until it snaps into place. (Figure 12) Installation of a power pair protector is similar: push the two legs into two slots between the top and bottom ports of the pairs to be protected, and over the prong of the ground bar above the ports. (Figure 13) 13
5.2 Removing Circuit Protectors The C5C installation tool includes a small hook that pulls out from the tool handle. Place the hook in the small hole at the end of the circuit protector, and pull until the circuit protector releases from the block. (Figure 14) Testing Wire Pairs and Circuit Protection Three test cords are available for the C5Ccross-connect system: A dual test cord with Monitoring and Interrupt test heads, plus a talk pair bracket that can be mounted inside a cabinet (Figure 15) A dual test cord with Monitoring and Interrupt heads only (Figure 16) A Universal test cord with Monitoring, Interrupt, and Protector test heads (Figure 17) CAUTION: Use a clean cloth to wipe off the test head mating surfaces before each use.
