2 1.0 General The 3M Indoor Protected Building Entrance Terminal (IBET) 4788-QCS Series provides electrical protection and a termination point for outside plant cable (feeder) and indoor house wiring (distribution). 3 1.5 Protector Specifications Use ONLY UL Recognized or Listed five-pin protectors in the 4788V-QCS terminal. 1.6 Special Tools Needed to Splice 3M MS 2 Modules or 3M 710 Connectors (Not required if 3M Scotchlok Connectors are used) 2.0 3M Indoor Building Entrance Terminal Location and Mounting 2.1 Locate the terminal according to your company s standard operating procedures. Consider the following points: a) Terminals should be installed according to Article 800, Section C of the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70). CAUTION Avoid locations near flammable materials, ignitable gases, dust, moisture, temperature extremes, moving machinery, electric light and power circuits, and electrical equipment. b) Locate the terminal inside the building as close as possible to cable entrance. c) Locate the terminal on a firm mounting surface where it will be accessible to the technicians at all times; where it can be reached without a ladder; and where it will not project in a hazardous manner. d) Observe caution when exposing the terminal to chemicals in liquid or vapor form as they may damage the plastic components. 3.0 Feeder Cable Preparation and Strain Relief 3.1 Feeder cable diameters for the 3M Indoor Building Entrance Terminal (IBET) 4788V-QCS Series Minimum Diameter Maximum Diameter Entrance Cable 0.42" (10.7 mm) 1.45" (36.8 mm) If the cable diameter is smaller than the minimum, use Scotch Linerless Rubber Splicing Tape 130C to build up to the minimum. 3.2 Run the feeder cable 24" (610 mm) past the 3M Indoor Building Entrance Terminal (IBET) cable entry port. 3.3 Slide the 3M Pull N Shrink Tube (PST) on the end of the cable with the pull-tab away from the IBET and temporarily keep it out of the way. 3.4 With the groove toward the IBET and long end toward the cable, snap the cable gland halves around the cable. Slide the gland into the entry port of the IBET. 3.5 Measure 2" (51 mm) of sheath past the gland inside the IBET. Pull the gland and cable out of the IBET. 2" A 3

4 3.6 Remove the sheath, leaving at least 21" (533 mm) of free conductor length. Identify and secure the cable groups ends. Bond the cable shield according to your company s practice. 3.7 Insert the gland s groove into the cable port. Slide the 3M Pull N Shrink Tube (PST) over the gland and slowly unwind the core. The PST core fits over either the small diameter of the 25-to 50-pair gland or butts up against the 3M Indoor Building Entrance Terminal (IBET) 4788V-QCS for the 100- pair gland. 3.8 Complete the PST core removal over the gland. 3.9 The blank plate MUST be used in the empty cable port for UL Listing Attach the cable to the wall according to your company s practice. 4.0 Terminal Grounding 4.1 Fasten a #6 AWG wire to the ground bar, which is located on the front of the unit. Connect the other end of the ground wire to local ground per company standards. Note: Failure to properly bond and ground the terminal per N.E.C. or local equivalent codes may render protection arrestors useless. 5.0 Splicing 5.1 Splice the feeder cable group(s) to the appropriate 3M Terminal Block Tail(s) per your company s practice. 5.2 Bundle completed 3M Splice Module(s) and secure them with 3M Cable Ties within the splice chamber. 5.3 Close the splice chamber cover and secure the lock plate bolt. 6.0 Distribution (customer) Cable Preparation and Strain Relief Note: To remove the 3M Quick Connect System (QCS) 2811 blocks insert a small to medium sized screwdriver into the block retention opening on the top of one side of the QCS 2811 block. Insert the blade between the metal retention tab on the frame and the inside of the block opening. Apply a small outbound force to the metal tab while lifting up slightly on the block. Keep the block secure and repeat on the opposite side. The QCS 2811 block should lift straight up and off the frame. To reinstall keep the block level with the metal tabs and apply a down force. 6.1 Remove the installed QCS 2811 blocks. 6.2 Route the customer cables up from the bottom of the terminal and secure to the faceplate loops A

5 6.3 Secure the low count cable first to the faceplate loops, the higher count cables will waterfall to the outside edge. 6.4 Remove the sheath of the customer cable(s) at a point below the bottom of the appropriate 3M Quick Connect System (QCS) 2811 block. 6.5 Separate the appropriate conductors into their respective 10-pair cable count for each QCS 2811 block cable count. 6.6 Route the 10-pair group along the outer right side and over into the space above their respective QCS 2811 block. 6.7 Secure the 10 pair group with a small white cable tie. 6.8 Allow enough slack in each 10-pair group to facilitate termination in the QCS 2811 block placed in the top position. 6.9 Rotate the QCS 2811 block 180 degrees and place back on the metal frame with the back side of the block to the front at the top most set of metal tabs A 5

6 6.10 Open the jumper cap by pushing up on the latch and rotating up. Insert the conductor ends A (tip) left and B (ring) right into the cap, making sure they are inserted all the way to the back of the cap Terminate all 10 conductors in each block at the top metal tab. This ensures adequate conductor slack for each block Once all the conductors have been terminated to the blocks, reinstall the blocks to the frame and apply labels. 7.0 Running Jumpers 3M Quick Connect System (QCS) 2811 Block 7.1 Open the feeder pair jumper cap by pushing up on the latch and rotating up. Insert jumper wire ends A (tip) left and B (ring) right into wire openings in the cap, making sure they are inserted all the way to the back of the cap. 7.2 While holding the jumper wires in place, close the cap and press to snap the latch firmly into place A

7 7.3 Route the jumper wires to the distribution pair through wire loops on the block ends and through vertical and horizontal wireways. Cut jumper wires to appropriate length, leaving at least 2" (51 mm) of slack. 7.4 Terminate the jumper wires to the distribution pair by repeating the procedure described in steps 6.1 and Terminate additional jumper wires by repeating the above procedure. 7.6 To remove jumper wires, open the cap and pull the wires straight out from block. 7.7 Route the wire below the connected cap. 8.0 Installing the Electrical Protectors Note: Use ONLY UL Recognized or Listed protectors in the IBET. 8.1 The 3M Indoor Building Entrance Terminal (IBET) 4788V-QCS uses a standard five pin protector receptacle field. The long pins of the protector connect Tip and Ring from the feeder cable though the protector to the short pins to the distribution/ house wire. 8.2 Insert protectors into the protector receptacle field according to your company s practice. 8.3 To disconnect the distribution wire, pull the protector out to the detents on the long pins to hold it in place. This continues to protect from the feeder cable side. 9.0 Protective Cover 9.1 With the cover closed, the exposed hasp allows for locking when security is required A 7

8 10.0 3M Single Pair Test Probe Plug the test probe into the cap of the pair being tested, with the black lead to the left and the red lead to the right M Priority Caps 11.1 Priority caps are used to designate special purpose circuits and prevent entry of the 3M Single Pair Test Probe To install priority caps, place over the jumper cap of the pair to be marked and push it into place. Latching is indicated by an audible snap.

9 12.0 Multiple 3M Indoor Building Entrance Terminal (IBET) 4788V-QCS Installation Note: Use this application when the required cable pair capacity exceeds the capacity of a single IBET The design of the splice chamber and the grooved cable glands make it possible to stack the IBET vertically, up to three of the same cable pair count and within the diameter limits in the chart in " (533 mm) 12.2 Mounting the IBET a) Mount the IBET bodies using the cable glands to position them. b) Assemble the feeder cable strain relief according to Section 3.0 and prepare the feeder cable so that 21" (533 mm) of free conductor length will be in the last IBET. 1" (25 mm) minimum 2.75" (70 mm) minimum 12.3 Place cable glands around the free conductors and position into the IBET Separate the feeder cable pair assigned to each IBET; splice and bond the IBET according to section A 9
