Consider the following points as much as possible: 7.0 Entrance Cable Preparation and Termination a. Locate terminal on a firm mounting surface where it will be accessible to the technicians at all times; where it can be reached without a ladder; and where it will not project in a hazardous manner. CAUTION: Avoid locations near flammable materials, ignitable gases, dust, moisture, temperature extremes, moving machinery, electric light and power circuits, and electrical equipment. b. Observe caution when exposing terminal to chemicals in liquid or vapor form as they may damage the plastic components Open enclosure door by using a 7/16" terminal wrench Open the splicing chamber by removing the two screws on the splice chamber door. Reinsert screws in tapped holes to avoid losing screws Pull the preterminated short stub, insulated ground wire, and accessories out of the splicing chamber Tape the mounting template to the designated position and mark screw locations (4). Remove mounting template Mount the terminal in designated position with the four mounting screws provided. 6.0 Terminal Grounding Protected entrance terminals are to be installed in accordance with Article 800, Section C of the National Electric Code (ANSI/NFPA 70). Fasten a #6 AWG wire to the ground bar which is located on the front of the unit. Connect other end of ground wire to local ground per company standards. Failure to properly bond and ground the terminal per N.E.C. or local equivalent codes may render protection arrestors useless. The maximum cable diameter for this terminal is 1 1/2" (38 mm). Minimum cable diameter allowed in the area of PST application is 1" (25 mm). If the cable diameter is smaller than 1" (25 mm), build up diameter by applying Scotch TM 88T Vinyl Tape or equivalent.
4 7.01 Extend entrance cable at least 30" (762 mm) past cable entry port. Temporarily fasten cable to wall 18" (457 mm) minimum, above or below terminal, dependent on cable entrance choice Remove knockout at selected cable entry location For bottom entry, slide 3M brand Pull'N'Shrink Tubing (PST) over cable sheath with pull tab facing down. Slide gland (without nut) over cable sheath with fingers facing down. For top entry, pull tab on PST and fingers on gland must be facing up when sliding over cable sheath Attach insulated ground wire to bonding connector per standard procedure Slide PST over gland assembly and butt up to terminal. Slowly unwind loose core tail in a counterclockwise direction while edging PST toward terminal side as the core is removed. Bottom Entry Core Wrap Temporarily tape PST and gland to wall, cable or other suitable surface to keep the PST and gland out of the way Lay cable against terminal and mark sheath allowing for a minimum of 2" (51 mm) of cable sheath to extend past the cable entry port. 1/2" (13 mm) The PST must be positioned a maximum of 3/8" (10 mm) away from the terminal entry port. If this dimension is not achieved, remove collapsed PST with a sharp knife and remove cable and gland from terminal. Repeat steps 7.03, 7.08, 7.09, 7.10, 7.11 and After positioning PST as close as possible to terminal, continue core removal to collapse PST over the gland. Complete core removal. 2" (51 mm) Remove cable sheath leaving a minimum of 1/2" (13 mm) of core wrap to protect cable from bonding connector. Conductor length should be a minimum of 27" (686 mm). Install bonding connector per standard procedure Identify and tape ends of binder groups to keep conductors from unwinding during splicing Install the cable through cable entry port into the splice chamber of the terminal Slide the gland up the cable and insert into the cable entry port. While holding gland in this position, slide nut over cable beyond bonding connector and install gland and nut Wire Termination: a. Attach 4041 Splice Head to 4044 Frame Adapter. Snap adapter legs into diamondshaped cutouts in bracket. Gold adapter must be placed in splice head before splicing
5 b. Place modular connector base onto splicing head. The cut corner of the base should be on the left-hand side and rear of the splicing head. c. Select entrance cable binder group and lay into base by color code. Check conductor order with check comb. Select matching binder group from preconnectorized short stub. Place body/cover on top of base, matching the cut corners. d. Crimp connector using the 4030, 4031 or 4036 crimping unit. e. Install sealant boxes on modules. For health, safety, and disposal information, see sealant box label or Material Safety Data Sheet. f. For wire termination onto the preconnectorized 710-type connector short stub, refer to the Bell System practice, section g. Remove door from terminal. Reinstall door when wire termination is completed. h. Remove clamp from traverse bar assembly and mount traverse bar 3" (76 mm) from PET with two #12 wood screws (not supplied). 8.0 Multiple Terminal Installation 8.01 Vertical Stacking The design of the integral splice chamber enables up to three PETs of same pair count to be stacked vertically (dependent on cable diameter). Vertical stacking is used when the entrance cable pair count is greater than the capacity of a single PET or when the installation design requires that only a portion of entrance cable pairs be initially terminated. a. Fasten entrance cable to the wall above or below terminals, dependent upon cable entrance choice. Attach the PETs to the mounting surface in a vertical arrangement. Use the mounting template to ensure proper spacing between terminals. b. When stacking vertically, a coupling kit must be used to connect the cabinets at the splice chambers. c. Install stacked units starting from bottom. When using the coupling kit the fingers on the gland must be trimmed After termination is complete, neatly bundle wire and modular connectors and lay in splice chamber. Close chamber door and secure with screws supplied or any #8-32 screw 1/4" - 1/2" (6 mm - 13 mm) long to meet UL requirements Scotchlok TM UR and UY Connectors may be substituted for the modular connectors on the preconnectorized short stub. Use Scotchlok E-9 Series Tools for proper crimping of connectors. d. Remove cable sheath, leaving a minimum of 1/2" (13 mm) of core wrap to protect cable from bonding connector. Free conductor length should be equal to or longer than the vertical length of the mounted PETs. e. Identify and tape ends of binder groups to keep conductors from unwinding during splicing operations. f. Install binder groups into the corresponding PETs through the entry gland. For wire termination onto preconnectorized short stub, refer to the MS 2 Splicing Instruction Bulletin. g. When the installation design requires that only a portion of entrance cable pairs be initially terminated, the free conductors should be a minimum of 27" (686 mm) from the farthest PET cable entry port. Tape ends together and neatly lay them into the integral splice chamber on top of the terminated cable pairs. 4
