4 MODEL SMS-1 OPERATION The heart of the Model SMS-1 is the TDL Model 411 Measurement Microphone Preamplifier and a copy of its User Guide is included in this User Guide. A copy of the Model 818 User Guide is also included here along with a copy of the 818 Calibration Sheet showing the microphone s sensitivity. Data sheets for the Behringer ECM-8000 and Dayton EMM-6 Measurement Microphones are included for your convenience even if one or both were not included in your purchase. Both the Behringer and Dayton microphones come in a plastic clam-shell case with a wind screen and friction-fit holder with 5/8"-27 thread to fit a standard mic stand. The holders work okay but I prefer a spring-action holder* which will also accommodate the 818 mic with the addition of a couple of strips of foam rubber or other cushioning material. I also prefer using a camera tripod as a mic stand which most often comes with a 1/4"-20 thread to mount the camera. I have made brass insert adapters with a 5/8"-27 external thread and a 1/4"-20 internal thread to solve the mic mounting problem. 7 MODEL 411 OPERATION To operate the pre-amplifier, plug the 24 VDC wall power supply into a convenient outlet and attach its cord to the male power-in connector. Power will be applied and the red LED will light. There is no power on-off switch in this unit as its presence would increase the power line hum pickup. An inline switch in the power cord can be used if desired as could a power strip with an on-off switch. Connect your microphone to one of the two input connectors. The XLR connector provides a balanced input with 48 volt phantom power which is suitable for the Behringer ECM-8000 as well as many other electret condenser microphones. The RCA connector is an unbalanced input with 5 volt phantom power suitable for TDL models 817A and 818. Connect the RCA output connector to your amplifier, recorder or sound card line-input. Depending on the setting of the internal jumper (see next page and also the bottom side of the top cover plate), this pre-amplifier has a maximum gain of 40, 50 or 60 db in eleven 4 db steps. It is usually best to start out with a low gain setting and then turn it up as needed. NOTE: Two microphones cannot be used at the same time because the inputs to instrumentation amplifier U1 are not summing junctions.

9 MODEL 411 CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION In Figure 1, U1 is a low-noise instrumentation amplifier whose gain is set by the resistance value connected between pins 1 and 8. Rotary switch S1 varies this resistance to produce gains from zero to 40 db in 4 db steps. U2 is a now-noise opamp and U2B is connected to provide an additional gain of zero, 10 or 20 db depending upon the placement of the jumper on jumper block 1. (See the previous page or the underside of the top cover plate for a diagram of jumper settings.) U2A is connected to null the DC offset at the output of U1 so that a coupling capacitor is not needed between the output of U1 and the input of U2B or at the pre-amplifier output. Figure 2 shows the circuit diagrams of the power and phantom supplies. The input 24 volts DC is split into positive and negative levels of ±12 to ±13 volts by power opamp U101.These voltages are then regulated to ±9 volts by low-power regulators U102 and U104. Further regulation to ±6 volts are provided by U103 and U105. This double regulation makes the ±6 volt supplies very quiet which helps to achieve the pre-amplifier s very low output noise. The 9 volts is also used to power the two phantom supplies. U106 is a boost mode DC to DC converter. Its 56 volt output is regulated to 48 volts by the two 24 volt Zener diodes in series (D103 and D104). This supply (up to R110) uses surface mount (SM) components with a full ground plane on the bottom side of the circuit board. This design along with enclosing the power supply circuit board in a separate cast aluminum box contributes greatly to the low noise level. The 5 volt phantom power is supplied by U107, a precision 5 volt reference IC.
