3 GLOSSARY OF TERMS The following terms are used in this manual. To better understand the information presented in the manual you should familiarize yourself with these terms. CAT5e (Category 5e) - A twisted pair cable used for carrying signals. Cat5e is an enhanced version of Category 5 that adheres to more stringent standards. It is capable of transmitting data at speeds of up to 1000 Mbps (1 Gigabit per second). In the Sync system it is used in an Ethernet network to interconnect the Control desk computer(s), Peripheral Controller boxes, overhead Display Controllers and the bowler s input consoles. Comport - Connectors on a computer that allow it to communicate with other devices using serial communication. These connections are also referred to as serial ports or RS-232 ports. Multiple comports in a computer are referred to by number such as com1 or com2. Also refer to Serial Communication. Peripheral Controller - A box located near the pinsetter on each lane pair that provides multiple functions for the lane pair. It is responsible for interfacing pin cameras, controlling machine functions such as on/off and reset, and handling signals needed for scoring such as foul, sweep switch, and ball detector signals. It can control AMF short cycle and automated bumpers as needed. It also provides power and communication to optional Vector keypads. Ethernet - A protocol that specifies how computers send information to one another in a network. Ethernet Switch - Device that is the central point of connection that allows network devices to communicate with each other. In the Sync scoring system multiple switches are used to connect the Peripheral Controllers, Display Controllers, Sync consoles and the Control system computer(s). Also refer to Cat5. RS The most popular type of serial communication used by computers. This type of communication allows a computer to talk to a single specific device through a 9-pin connector called a comport. Each device that the computer talks to will have its own dedicated comport. RS A type of serial communication that allows a computer to talk to multiple devices using one shared comport. Also refer to Serial Communication. Serial Communication - A popular means of transmitting data between a computer and another device. In the Sync system two types of serial communication are used; RS-232 and RS-485. Also refer to RS- 232 and RS-485. Sync Control System 3

4 SYNC NETWORK SYSTEM OVERVIEW The Sync control system consists of one or more computers and POS assemblies located at the control desk, and in some cases, a computer in the office. Sync also provides the bowling center personnel convenient control of the scoring system while keeping track of the financial transactions and bowling activity in the center. In addition, it allows the center additional security control for the system, additional reporting of bowling activity, and an integrated league record and tournament program. Refer to figures titled: Sync Configuration 1, Sync Configuration 2, Sync Configuration 3, Sync Configuration 4 and Sync Configuration with Sync Touchpads or Vector Keypads. 4 Sync Control System

10 SYNC COMPUTERS The Sync Scoring System use Dell computers for the server and client computers. The specific Dell model and the Windows operating system installed on the computer depends on when the computer was installed and whether it is used as the server or client computer. Currently the server computer has the Windows 2012 server operating system installed while the clients operate on the Windows 7 operating system. Additional information for your specific Dell computer can be found at their website www. Dell.com. WARNING! Each computer is designed for universal input voltage which means it can operate with an input of 115 VAC or 230 VAC. Although operating voltage is normally set when the computer is installed, it may be necessary to configure it when replacing the computer. To select the voltage, simply slide the selector switch located on the back of the computer near the power input receptacle, so the desired voltage can be read on the selector. Refer to the figure titled Rear Panel Connectors and Voltage Switch shown later in this section. The location of the computer(s) depends on the bowling center s needs. (All installations will have at least one computer located at the control desk.) For most installations, the server computer is located in an office while client computers are used at the point of sale areas. For the drawer function properly the receipt printer must be on and cannot be in an error state. Sync Control System 17

18 INTERCOM Overview The intercom system used in the Sync system depends on what type of bowler console the center has installed. When equipped with Sync Touchpads or Vector keypads, an Audio Control Unit and handset /beeper assemblies are used. When the center is equipped with lower tablets, a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) telephone is used. Intercom with Sync Touchpads or Vector Keypads Intercom Beeper Assembly The intercom beeper assembly provides an audible indication whenever an intercom request is received from a console. The box is connected to the Audio Control unit through a 6-conductor telephone cable, then to the handset box via another 6-conductor cable. A volume control on the assembly allows the control desk operator to adjust the volume level of the beep. Refer to the figure titled Beeper Assembly. 39 TV VIDEO DISTRIBUTION The TV video distribution system works similar to a typical cable tv system. A distribution center typically located at the control desk takes the audio/video from each source and assigns a unique TV channel to each of them, then combines the channels onto a single coax cable. From there, the coax cable is distributed to the display monitors in the center. To view a particular source, the user simply selects the desired channel to show the contents of that channel. The system can connect to any number of monitors or bowling center size, up to 96 lanes. Refer to the figure titled Sync TV Video Cabling. The system can distribute any combination of HD signals (1080p, 1080i, and 720p ) and SD (Standard Definition) signals, 480P and 480i. The system can mix digital video signals (1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i) and analog video signals (480i only).
