7 Quantum Flexible Control Language Choices IEC or 984 Ladder Logic Advanced IEC Languages, the productivity choice of control system design engineers Quantum is compliant with all 5 languages of the international IEC language standard. This combination of IEC languages creates a versatile programming environment which is incredibly productive. Quantum IEC programs are designed from the outset in a well documented, structured manner with the source code residing together with the programming PC for secure archiving. Quantum s 5 IEC languages are: Sequential Function Chart: provides overall structure and coordination for batch oriented process or machine control applications Function Block Diagram: particularly well suited for process control applications Ladder Diagram: excellent for discrete control and interlocking logic Structured Text: higher level language which is a terrific solution for complex algorithms and data manipulation Instruction List: low level language for optimized code performance Proven 984 Ladder Logic, the choice of plant personnel This time tested language has been optimized for discrete control applications. It is a high performance, low level language whose application source code resides in the controller. A full set of over 80 instructions are included with every Quantum CPU. The 984 instruction set ensures compatibility and easy integration paths for installed Modicon applications. In addition, several enhancements have been made to the instruction set, including: Immediate I/O and Interrupt servicing to enhance system performance Equation editor for easier math capabilities 7

Using familiar, standardized editors bundled in a single application, users can create and integrate Quantum control, communication and diagnostic logic. Concept provides the programmer with the ability to create standard libraries of Derived Function Blocks, or DFBs, which can be called again and again from within an application program. These DFBs can be written in Ladder Diagram, Function Block Diagram, Structured Text or Instruction List languages. If a particular algorithm or standard piece of control logic, like a motor starter circuit, needs to be changed the programmer makes the change once. Concept features include: Easy-to-use interfaces, re-usable programs, powerful search functions, industry leading free-form graphics editors, and on-line help that simplifies programming, documenting and maintaining your Quantum system. Powerful search functions that allow you to search for variables, discover errors, and identify unused variables. For the most demanding algorithms and applications, Concept supports the creation of Elementary Function Blocks, or EFBs in C language application program. Concept also supports 984 Ladder Logic and includes a program converter that makes it easy to import a Modsoft program. 11 Flexible Quantum I/O Makes the most demanding jobs easy Wide selection The Quantum Automation Series supports a full range of high performance I/O modules designed to interface with a wide variety of field devices. Proven to meet internationally recognized standards Quantum modules are designed to meet international standards such as UL, CSA, CE and VDE. In addition, Quantum is approved by Factory Mutual for use in Class 1, Division 2 Groups A-D, equivalent to IEC standards Ex ia and EX ib Zone 2 Groups lla-c. Quantum is certified to meet the following European Community directives: 73/23/EEC LVD (Low Voltage Directive) and 89/336/ EEC EMC (Electromagnetic Compatability). Easy to troubleshoot and configure All Quantum I/O modules are addressed and mapped with Concept or Modsoft software, allowing any module to be installed in any slot regardless of module type. All configuration parameters for each I/O module are also included in the I/O Map configuration screen. This eliminates the need for manual setup switches or special ladder logic to configure and read modules. Once configured, software in the system can detect if a module is missing or broken and flag it within the controller. LED s on each module also aid in troubleshooting. Optional mechanical keying between the module and terminal strip ensures that field wiring and modules are correctly matched. Software configuration makes Quantum Analog I/O flexible It s easy to configure a Quantum Thermocouple card, or any other analog I/O module. Simply enter the module in the I/O Map, and zoom into its module parameter screen to select: Desired module temperature resolution, 1 or 1/10 of a degree Degrees C or F Onboard temperature compensation or external Thermocouple type by channel CableFast makes wiring fast and easy CableFast is an innovative, pre-engineered cable and terminal block solution that replaces independently wired marshalling blocks and I/O connectors with quick connections at all ends. 11

13 Advanced Quantum I/O Special purpose modules enhance system performance Substation I/O modules for direct 125 Vdc control Quantum I/O modules are available for direct connection to critical 125 Vdc battery powered equipment such as circuit breakers, protective relays, transformersand capacitor banks. Built-in high transient noise immunity ensures reliable operation in harsh 125 Vdc environments. The 125 Vdc 30A high current output module eliminates expensive high current interposing relays used in breaker tripping and closure. The solid-state 125 Vdc low current output module ensures long life and trouble-free operation in higher frequency 125 Vdc switching environments without the use of expensive external snubbing circuitry. Over-current/ short circuit diagnostics and protection on all solid state 125 Vdc outputs reduce downtime by ensuring quick identification of circuit problems and fast repair. Latch/Interrupt module for time critical applications The Quantum Latch/ Interrupt module is a multi-purpose high speed input, latch, and interrupt module combined, which is configurable through programming software. Interrupt handling instructions are part of the 984 Ladder Logic instruction set. Quantum throughput performance for 2 interrupts is typically 1ms. High speed counters don t miss a pulse Quantum high speed counter modules have the ability to count pulses at speeds much faster than the Quantum controller can directly do by itself. These modules automatically report the current count to the Quantum controller every scan. Simple ASCII exchanges The Quantum ASCII module is a general purpose ASCII interface that provides the ability to communicate and exchange data with devices including printers, bar code readers and scanners, weigh scales, and meters. This module is designed for relatively simple point to point ASCII communications, with ASCII messages stored inside the module triggered by logic within the Quantum controller. Quantum integrated motion solutions Modicon motion products offer the flexibility only digital servos can provide. In addition, Modicon motion products are integrated with Modicon controllers, for fast and simple communication, setup, and operation. Because the Modicon line of motion control products includes controllers, drives, motors, and accessories, it eliminates the risk of incompatibility. 13

Combining these different I/O architectures with Quantum s wide range of communication options, an optimal control system can be configured and installed to meet the most challenging control requirements. Quantum has the capacity to expand whenever you need it. Quantum I/O can be used in three major architectures to meet control system requirements: Local I/O Remote I/O Distributed I/O Quantum backplanes and power supplies fit where you need them Quantum backplanes use a common strategy so every slot in every backplane is electrically identical, with no slot dependencies. All addressing is done via software, making module replacement plug and play. Backplane models are available in 2, 3, 4, 6, 10, and 16 slot versions. For reduction of spare parts, the same back- planes are used in Local, Remote, and Distributed Quantum I/O racks. Providing power to the Quantum backplane and protection to the system from noise and swings in nominal voltages, Quantum power supplies ensure the system will operate in typical electrical plant environments. In the event of unforeseen electrical problems, they protect the system by initiating a safe and orderly shutdown. Quantum Remote I/O is serviced synchronous to the scan of the CPU. This ensures fast deterministic control of the process from the CPU s application program, and makes the Quantum Hot Standby System s bumpless transfer possible, and provides the safest possible operating mode of any controller on the market. Since each Quantum CPU comes standard with a Modbus Plus port, you don t have to purchase a separate I/O head end. Cost effective DIO drop adapters with integral power supplies save you even more money. Quantum combination discrete and analog I/O modules save additional space, cost and money, all without sacrificing performance Since Distributed I/O uses the same network technology as Modbus Plus, it can coexist on this flexible control network with programmers, MAGELiS HMI devices and Altivar 66 variable speed drives reducing the number of communication networks required for a system. Momentum I/O further reduces the installed cost of I/O by combining an I/O module, field wiring terminal and Modbus Plus interface into a module only two inches deep, allowing a custom fit right next to the control point. 17

Quantum offers a range of options to maximize the availability of your system to do its job, control your process. From the simple addition of a redundant power supply where you want a little more peace of mind to the incredible security of the Quantum Hot Standby System, Quantum has you covered. Quantum I/O modules may be Hot Swapped under power while not disturbing other operating elements of the control system. In the event of a communication failure, all discrete and analog I/O module outputs can be configured to one of three failure states: All Outputs Off, Hold Last Value, or Go To Predefined State. This flexibility ensures that the system will behave as intended even if communications are interrupted. Quantum data memory may be split into separate read/write and read only areas to eliminate the possibility of corrupting memory reserved for internal operations over a network connection. Both Concept and Modsoft support passwords to restrict programmer access to the appropriate level. Redundant Quantum power supplies keep your system up and running upon the loss of a single power supply module. 23 Reliable Quantum Hot Standby The ultimate in high availability control Quantum Hot Standby, the ultimate high availability control system If your application requires fault tolerance and high availability, consider Quantum s redundant controller option. Simple to configure and easy to install, the hot standby system provides bumpless standby control in case of a component failure or power source interruption. Two identically configured Quantum systems communicate with each other via the hot standby option processor located in each Quantum system. One of the controllers in the configuration acts as the primary, while the other is in standby mode, ready to take ownership of the S908 Remote I/O link upon any failure of the primary system. The scans of the primary and standby controllers operate in a a synchronous manner allowing a controlled transfer for the highest possible control system integrity.
