83 FRDR Limited Production Projects Ocean Networks Canada DFO dataset: Ocean Networks Canada was approached by DFO and asked to find an appropriate repository for the ingest and dissemination of several datasets. The datasets consist of physical, chemical, and biological oceanographic data from the Douglas Channel off the coast of BC. The data are highly heterogeneous, covering everything from oxygen concentration to ocean currents to plankton counts, spanning from National Research Council: AI research; data was used as a test case for training a deep neural network to reproduce the results of a partial differential equation (the time independent Schrodinger equation); Quote from the PI: This is a useful dataset to make available to the public because most people in the deep learning community do not have the expertise to generate it. Currently deep learning research tends to focus on datasets which are openly available. In practice, that means a lot of effort is spent on cat images. This would be a new and interesting type of data for the community to work with. Water Institute, University of Waterloo: Based at the University of Waterloo, the Water Institute (WI) facilitates collaboration, supports excellence and promotes innovation in interdisciplinary water research and education. WI includes more than 150 faculty members and 300 students across 19 departments in all six of the University of Waterloo faculties. WI is interested in FRDR as a data publication repository that could be used by all of their members to deposit datasets, especially those related to journal publications. Given the diverse nature of the research conducted under the program, they require a repository that can support a variety of metadata schemas and data types and sizes. In particular, the repository must be able to support data files in the GB to TB range to accommodate datasets associated with numerical modeling.
84 FRDR Limited Production Projects Global Institute for Water Security (GIWS) Based out of the University of Saskatchewan, GIWS is funded through the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Water Security (CERC), a $30-million, joint federalprovincial-university commitment over seven years. Led by Dr. Howard Wheater, one of the world s foremost hydrologists, they are developing the modelling tools, techniques and policies to sustainably manage the world s freshwater resources. They are studying the effects of climate change, water security, land-water management, socio-hydrology, and the sustainable development of natural resources. GIWS required a simple yet reliable way to deposit research data to facilitate its discovery and dissemination. In particular, an early need is to publish data of the Changing Cold Regions Network (CCRN), a collaborative research network bringing together the unique expertise of a team of over 40 Canadian university and government scientists, representing 8 universities and 4 federal government agencies. CCRN s overall aims are to integrate existing and new sources of data with improved predictive and observational tools to understand, diagnose and predict interactions amongst the cryospheric, ecological, hydrological, and climatic components of the changing Earth system.
85 FRDR Limited Production Projects Mountain Legacy Project The Mountain Legacy Project utilizes archival research, repeat photography, and scientific, historical, and cultural analyses of repeated historical survey photographs to assess landscape change in the Canadian Rocky Mountains over the last century. From the 1880 s through the 1950 s surveyors with the Geological Survey of Canada, the Department of the Interior s Dominion Land Survey, and other government departments deployed an effective method of surveying the mountains of Western Canada called phototopographic surveying. These methods left a legacy of systematic photographs with nearly complete coverage of much of the landscape. They offer an unprecedented data set for historical researchers and repeat photographers, providing a rigorous overview of landscape conditions during a period of intense development and ecological transitions. Project members have unearthed a vast collection of systematic phototopographic survey images, maps, and associated information dating back to the late 19th century, and have re-photographed thousands of these images since The Mountain Legacy Project has reached out to the University of Victoria Libraries to help with the secure storage, digital reproduction, and dissemination of its archival photographs. Due to the large file sizes of many of the high resolution images, the University of Victoria is relying on FRDR to help make these unique, invaluable datasets available to researchers worldwide.
86 FRDR Limited Production Projects Stone Tools, Diet and Sociality at the Dawn of Humanity Stone Tools is a multidisciplinary project studying ancient diets, stone tools and sociality in the face of environmental changes at several sites known to be some of the cradles of humanity, including the Olduvai Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tanzania s Ngorongoro Conservation Area, dating back 1.8 million years. This area has been key to understanding evolution of early humans, particularly as it relates to the use of stone tools. This research seeks to explore the correlation between growing aridity and shifting technologies, functionalities, food-processing abilities, diets, and human dimensions contexts. It implements cutting-edge protocols for the analysis of organic remains to achieve a holistic characterization of an ancient technology that integrates surface features such as color, texture, or shape with stone provenance, function, and residue analysis. Through FRDR, the group hopes to make the data underlying its research publications available to other researchers studying similar sites, and to the international research community more generally. The FRDR curation team has also been working with the group to identify and apply standardized metadata to their datasets to encourage discoverability, as well as providing guidance on how they can package subsets of their data for publication.
