Stats & Trends 2 DATA / STATS FOR GENERAL COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURE The US architecture industry includes about 30,000 establishments with combined annual revenue of about $38 billion. 1 Value of US commercial construction in August 2010 was $39,398,000, which is a 21.3% decrease from August Entering 2010, The AIA Consensus Construction Forecast Panel projected a 13% decline in spending for nonresidential building projects. Halfway through the year, prospects deteriorated and consensus now predicting a 20% decline this year (30% in commercial sector, over 20% for manufacturing facilities, and 12% for institutional buildings). A fragile financial sector, excess commercial space and unease in the international economy all share blame for current situation. 3 Next year (2011) is projected to show some relief in the construction sector. The consensus for overall spending growth in nonresidential building is just over 3%, more than 5% in the commercial sector, a 2% decline in manufacturing facilities, and 4% growth for institutional buildings. In the commercial sector, retail and hotel facilities are expected to see the strongest growth, while health care and amusement and recreation facilities are the consensus for the best performers on the institutional side. 4 TRENDS FOR GENERAL COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURE Moving the issues of environmental sustainability into the mainstream is a significant development in the architecture profession. 5 One of the biggest influences in architecture today is concern for the environment and the development of green buildings. 6 Another key development architects are working on is super high skyscrapers. Developers all over the world are attempting to create buildings taller than the last. 7

Stats & Trends 3 DATA / STATS FOR HIGHER EDUCATION AS RELATED TO ARCHITECTURE The US colleges and universities industry includes about 4,300 degree-granting institutions with combined annual revenue of about $465 billion. 8 The US educational construction value in August 2010 was $87,156,000, which is a 14.4% decrease from August in 5 Americans go to school every day (students, teachers, staff, administrators). Green schools are a new generation of school buildings that will be centers of learning for the next 50 years. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and U.S Green Building Council (USGBC) are working together on a report called Local Leaders in Sustainability to explore how green schools are transforming local communities across America. AIA and USGBC will be holding The Green Schools Summit to provide decision makers with effective tools for greening schools and education. 10 TRENDS FOR HIGHER EDUCATION AS RELATED TO ARCHITECTURE Room flexibility, universal space, equipment storage, distance education are current factors/trends when designing/building for higher education facilities. 11 Colleges are now adapting an integrated design approach to dining facilities. The galley-style dining halls are changing into a more open and interactive environment. 12 The U.S. Department of Energy s Rebuild America program provides the following performance criteria for energy savings in schools: 1. reducing operating costs 2. designing buildings that teach 3. improving academic performance 4. protecting our environment 5. designing for health, safety, and comfort 6. supporting community values 13

Stats & Trends 4 DATA / STATS FOR HEALTHCARE AS RELATED TO ARCHITECTURE The US healthcare sector includes more than 780,000 hospitals, doctor offices, emergency care units, nursing homes and social services providers with combined annual revenue of more than $2 trillion. 14 Spending for healthcare construction is projected to drop 6% this year (2010), increase 12-13% next year (2011) and then rise at about the typical 8% annual pace for non-recession years. 15 Value of US healthcare construction in August 2010 was $40.1 million, which is a 9.9% decrease from August TRENDS IN HEALTHCARE AS RELATED TO ARCHITECTURE Surgical suite design has changed significantly and will continue to evolve over the next decade. Some key changes include a shift to more unified suites, an increase in operating room size and utilizing a cluster concept. 17 Noise in healthcare is an important concern. Achieving effective acoustical performance is a critical need for all types of healthcare facilities. 18 Sustainability trends are gaining tremendous momentum in the healthcare industry and the benefits have far-reaching effects. Reducing environmental toxins, increasing natural light, and improving overall comfort can shorten patient recovery time and reduce costs associated with long hospital stays. 19

Stats & Trends 5 DATA / STATS FOR RETAIL AS RELATED TO ARCHITECTURE The US retail industry includes about 1 million outlets with combined annual revenue of $4 trillion. 20 Retail construction spending forecast expected to be down 17.2% in 2010 and up 3.2% in As for new retail construction, it seems the big winners are niche retail brands that dominate a market category because the public is positively responding to the unique shopping environment of these stores. 22 TRENDS FOR RETAIL AS RELATED TO ARCHITECTURE Expect to see new innovation in store concepts, especially when it comes to capitalizing on vacated commercial space in prime locations. More creative re-use of empty commercial space means shopping center and retail construction renovation should increase in DATA / STATS FOR RESTAURANTS AS RELATED TO ARCHITECTURE The US restaurant industry includes about 480,000 restaurants with combined annual revenue of about $375 billion. 24 TRENDS FOR RESTAURANTS AS RELATED TO ARCHITECTURE As people have lost their jobs and become their own boss, expect to see increased commercial construction franchise work in 2010, particularly in food service. 25 Hot items for chefs include locally grown produce, whether it be in back of the restaurant or on the rooftop, and sustainability. 26
