1 Asian Disaster Preparedness Center ADPC Activities and Overview

2 Historical Overview Established in 1986 at the initiative of UNOCHA at Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), in Thailand. Served as Outreach Center of AIT, Became an independent foundation in July Attained Inter-governmental status in February Staff, 18 Nationalities. Signing of MoU between AIT and UNDRO VISION: Safer communities and sustainable development through disaster reduction. MISSION: To reduce the impact of disasters on communities and countries in Asia and the Pacific by : raising awareness and enhancing knowledge and skills, strengthening sustainable institutional mechanisms, facilitating exchange of information, experience and expertise.

35 A Road Map for Disaster Risk Management - Dec 2005 Technical assistance by UNDP and ADPC Asian Disaster Preparedness Center This Road map serves as a vision document for leading the way towards Safer Sri Lanka and incorporates prioritized activities that need to be implemented in short, medium and long-term for meeting the overall disaster risk management needs in the country

36 Community Based Disaster Risk Management Group Focus Areas Mobilizing support from government ministries, departments and other stakeholders to strengthen community capacities; Provide essential technical, financial and information services to vulnerable communities through implementing programs; Develop technical capacity of local government officials, NDMOs, development workers and others through training and developing of guidelines and handbooks; Facilitating sharing across multiple sectors and amongst countries on their experiences on community based disaster risk management;

37 Partnerships for Disaster Reduction- Southeast Asia (Phase III) Asian Disaster Preparedness Center PDRSEA 3 will achieve its objectives through activities in Strategy Planning, Networking, Advocacy, and Development of Frameworks, Tools. PDRSEA 3 endeavors to: Facilitate national strategy planning to institutionalize CBDRM in government policy, planning and implementation; Broaden the constituency of CBDRM to include the private sector, media, business and donor community, Develop technical tools, and frameworks to promote a common understanding of CBDRM in the project countries, and improve the practice; Facilitate exchange of knowledge and experiences to effect change of policies and practices, Enhance the capacities of CBDRM practitioners in the areas of implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and advocacy.

38 Training and Capacity Building Project (TCBP), Afghanistan Asian Disaster Preparedness Center TCBP aims to strengthen the capacity of the DDP and line ministries at national, provincial and district levels on various dimensions of disaster risk management. Major Components: Establishment of a Disaster Management Training Unit at the Department of Disaster Preparedness (DDP); Adaptation of seven international courses to the national context in Afghanistan and production of course materials into Dari language; Training of 575 officials and staff from the member ministries of the National Commission for Emergency and Disaster Management, the UN and NGOs; Development of a team of fifty national trainers, who could than provide training to other officials at the provincial, district and local levels;
