Workshop Development of the 250,000 Soil Database for the Danube River Basin by using e-soter e methodology Romania: State of Play Ruxandra VINTILA ICPA - Bucharest, Romania 5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 1
Outline 1. A few Facts about Romania 2. Spatial Data Resources for developing e-soter 250, Human Resources 4. Technical Resources 5. Conclusion: Romania s s Readiness 5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 2
1. FACTS Romania covers more than 29% of the Danube River Basin Surface area of Romania: 238,391 km 2-31% mountains - 36% hills and plateaus - 33% plains & the Danube Delta 5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 3
5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 4
2. Spatial Data Resources for e-soter e 250, The GIS of the Soil Resources of Romania SIGSTAR-200 Developed based on The Soil Map of Romania at the scale 200,000 consisting of 50 tiles ( ) More than 80,000 soil delineations For each soil polygon, SIGSTAR-200 manages: Four attributes existing on the paper map: - mapping unit - topsoil texture - skeleton - land slide risk Six attributes inferred by expert rules: - Water erosion - Wind erosion - Gleyzation - Pseudogleyzation - Salinisation - Alkalization 5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 5
The Map Legend: 475 mapping units The correlation between the Romanian Soil Classification System used (SRTS) and WRB 2007 is in progress Preliminary results: _the_soil_units_of_the_ _soil_map_of_romania_using_an _extended_terminology_of_the_wrb_system 5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 6
Example of inferred maps from the SIGSTAR-200 data 5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 7
Area of Interest Data Source: HYDRO1k 5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 8
Map of the areas affected by water erosion 5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 9
2.2 The Land Cover Map of Romania according to the Land Cover Classification System of FAO (LCCS) CORINE Land Cover (CLC) Example (CLC) 5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 10
2.3 Time series of satellite images at 1 km and 300m provided by ESA (MERIS & AATSR) and NASA (MODIS) 2.4 Digital Elevation Model: SRTM (90 m) 2.5 Meteorological data: from the national network 2.6 Soil profiles: from the Soil Survey Reports at the scale 1:10,000 (about 30% from the agricultural land) These data are not yet digitised. Other soil profiles: legacy data ( ) 1990) soil quality monitoring in a 16 km 2 grid These data sets are digitised, but we have to analyse if they are adequate as representative soil profiles of the e-soter e units at 250,000 equivalent scale. 5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 11
3. Human Resources Thematic expertise: 4 experienced researchers 4 early-stage researchers RS+GIS: 1 experienced researcher GIS: 2 early-stage researchers Programming: 1 At present, there is no competence at ICPA - Bucharest to build an INSPIRE compliant geo-portal. 5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 12
4. Technical Resources GIS: ArcGIS + Geostatistical Analyst (1); ArcView (1) RS (+GIS): IDRISI (1); GRASS; BEAM-VISAT; ILWIS; ; HANTS; GeoVIS; ImageJ Programming: MATLAB (1); R Equipment: PCs; colour printers, plotter and scanner; GARMIN Etrex devices 5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 13
5. Conclusion: Romania s Readiness for e-soter e 250,000 The actual level of readiness is a direct effect of several facts: Over the last 25 years, research have been funded up to 0.18% of GNP Since 1998, ICPA Bucharest is being publicly funded only by competition In the period , 2013, the rate of success in the national competitions for nine research domains ranged between 9% and 13% Since 2011, because of the austerity politics, only two Calls have been launched in the framework of the National Research Program (instead of two Calls each year, as it is stipulated in the Law) The competition rules do not generally allow to address ambitious national objectives, because of under funding and limited project duration (three years, in the best case) 5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 14
Thank you for your attention! 5-6 February 2015, JRC, Ispra, Italy 15
