14 What is GIS? GIS is an integrated system of computer hardware, software, and trained personnel linking topographic, demographic, utility, facility, image and other resource data that is geographically referenced. - NASA

15 The relationship between Utility design and GIS GIS is a key source of data to start your design project Relevant asset information from GIS is leveraged in layout, rules and detailed engineering design Utility design with GIS together drive the overall operations in more coordinated and efficient way Utility design information is needed to maintain GIS accuracy

16 Typical Workflow / Scenarios

17 Typical Scenarios You receive a work order or win a contract for a new subdivision electric distribution design. You need to find the existing data for the area of interest. After consulting with your GIS department or gathering data from other sources, you add the data to your project. Some of this data may need to be part of the data model in order maintain connectivity with existing utilities.

18 Typical Scenarios Enterprise Environment: The GIS Data is located in the same company but are owned by separate departments on 3 rd party application/database, like ArcSDE, Oracle Spatial Database, SQL Server, MicroStation, etc.. These environment setup are done by a CAD Manager and they may not be part of the design department. Engineering design department may or may not have the direct access to these existing data source. Designers will need to extract the area of interest from these GIS Data to begin their work.

19 Typical Scenarios Autodesk Environment: The GIS Data is located in the same company but are owned by separate departments The software use is AutoCAD Utilities Design and AutoCAD Map 3D (or other Infrastructure products) Special templates and IDM allow for smooth exchange

20 Typical Scenarios E&C or Contractors: Separate Department ; 3 rd Party Software The GIS Data comes from multiple sources and are not in a connected environment No dedicated CAD Managers Designer work directly with the County Planner, Clients, Contractors for the base dataset. The GIS data may also be extracted to some intermediate file.
