A database is a collection of interrelated data items that managed as a single unit What is a database instance? 13 Basic Definitions Mini-world: Some part of the real world about which data is stored in a database. For example, student grades and transcripts at a university. Database Management System (DBMS): A software package/ system to facilitate the creation and maintenance of a computerized database. Database System: The DBMS software together with the data itself. 14 Basic Definitions Industry definitions of the word database DB2: a logical collection of tables Oracle/MySQL: a set of files that store database objects; Oracle uses the term schema to mean roughly what DB2 and Sybase/MS SQL call a database Sybase/MS SQL Server: a logical group of database objects MS Access: a single file that contains a group of related database objects Rao Casturi - GSU - Database Systems

Depends on the DBMS, but for our purposes: A schema is logical grouping of tables and their associated indexes, views, stored procedures, etc Think logical owner or a database user that is allowed to own some tables and objects NOTE: You can have the same table name (with the same exact rows and columns) in many schemas, but you cannot have two schemas (database users) with the same exact name.
