2 2 Let s Begin Take a deep breath, prepare to learn, and be amazed by the results The following pages guide you through step-by-step instructions on how to print with Clear Toner through the imagepress Server Q2 on your imagepress C1+ digital printing system. Clear toner creates an effect where one part of the sheet is shiny and the other part is dull. You can control each of these areas through design applications such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and QuarkXpress. There are two methods of printing clear toner: one- and two-pass. CONTENTS 3 ONE-PASS PRINTING OPTION 5 TWO-PASS PRINTING OPTION TUTORIAL One-Pass Method Two-Pass Method The one-pass method prints the cyan, magenta, yellow, black, and clear toners all in one pass through the printer and fuser. This method creates an effect with less difference between the shiny and dull areas on the page. The two-pass method prints the cyan, magenta, yellow, and black toners on the first pass through the printer and fuser. The paper is then reinserted into the paper tray and the clear toner is printed and fused on the second pass. This method creates an effect with a greater difference between the shiny and dull areas.

3 ONE-PASS PRINTING OPTION 3 One-pass Printing Option: Creating a Spot-coating Effect Steps 1. Using Adobe Illustrator software, open the Clear Lemon.ai file. With the Selection Tool, click on the lemon graphic. (Fig. 1) Final output of One-pass Printing Option 2. Open the Attributes panel. (Window>Attributes) Note: When designing your own clear toner elements, you ll need to make sure that the Overprint Fill box is checked. (Fig. 2) 3. Open the Swatches panel. (Window>Swatches) As you can see, there s a custom swatch with the same color as the graphic. When doubleclicked, the Swatch Options panel reveals the lemon graphic that was created with a custom spot-color swatch named Lemon Spot. 4. Close the Clear Lemon.ai file. 5. Using Adobe InDesign software, create a new, letter-sized portrait document. 6. Open the Layers panel. (Window> Layers) 7. Change the name Layer 1 to Lemons. 8. Place the Lemons.tif file in the Lemons layer. (File>Place...) 9. Create a new layer, named Clear Lemon. 10. Place the Clear Lemon.ai. file in the Clear Lemon layer. (Fig. 3) Note: When the Clear Lemon.ai file was placed into this document, the Lemon spot-color swatch that was created in Illustrator was imported. 4 4 ONE-PASS PRINTING OPTION To Print 1. Open the Print dialog box. (Fig. 4) 2. Select the imagepress Server Q2 and click Printer..., located on the bottom of the Print dialog box. 3. Open the Fiery printer driver window by selecting the Full Properties button. 4. From the Color tab, make sure that the Composite Overprint box is checked. (Fig. 5) 5. Click the Finishing tab. 6. Under the Clear Coat heading, choose Spot Color from the drop-down menu. 7. In the Clear Coat Spot Color Name box, type the name of the spot color that was created earlier, Lemon Spot. Note: The Clear Coat Spot Color Name is case-sensitive. Figure 4: imagepress Server Q2 Printer Screen 8. At your imagepress C1+ digital printing system, load your media in the Stack Bypass Tray and select the Media tab. From the Media Type box, select the type of media you loaded. 9. Under the Paper Source heading, choose Stack Bypass. Click OK, then Print, and then Print again. Figure 5: Job Properties Screen-Color Tab 10. On the Command WorkStation, you ll see your document begin to print. To create and use a custom spot-color swatch: 1. In the Swatches panel, choose New Swatch from the upper-right, pull-down menu. 2. Give the swatch a name. Remembering the exact name of the swatch is critical in the printing process. 3. For Color Type, choose Spot Color. Note: The color you choose here merely represents these elements, so color choice is not critical. 4. Click (OK.) Example of custom spot-color swatch settings

5 TWO-PASS PRINTING OPTION 5 Two-pass Printing Option: Creating a Spot-coating Effect Steps 1. Using Adobe Illustrator software, open the Black Swirls.ai file. Using the Selection Tool (solid arrow), click on the design. (Fig. 1) 2. Open the Swatches panel. (Windows>Swatches) Note: As you can see, there s a custom swatch with the same name as the design. When double-clicked, the swatch options panel reveals that this design was created with a custom Spot Color swatch named Curls Spot. (Fig. 2) Final output of Two-pass Printing Option 3. Close the Black Swirls.ai file. Note: When designing Clear Toner elements, the Overprint Fill box in the Attributes panel must be checked for each clear element. 4. Using Adobe InDesign software, create a new, letter-sized portrait document. 5. Open the Layers panel (Window>Layers) and change the name of Layer 1 to Black Flood. 6. In the Toolbox, select the Rectangle Tool and change the Fill color to black. 7. Draw a black rectangle that takes up the entire page. 8. In the Layers panel, create a new layer named Clear Swirls. 9. Deselect All. (Select>Deselect) 10. Place the Black Swirls.ai file in the Clear Swirls layer and align the design evenly on the page. (Fig. 3) Note: When the Black Swirls.ai file is placed into this InDesign document, the Curls Spot color swatch that was created in Illustrator was imported. 6 6 TWO-PASS PRINTING OPTION To Print 1. Open the Print dialog box. (Fig. 4) 2. Select the imagepress Server Q2 and click Printer... located on the bottom of the Print dialog box. 3. Open the Fiery printer driver window by selecting the Full Properties button. 4. From the Color tab, make sure that the Composite Overprint box is checked. (Fig. 5) 5. Click on the Finishing tab. (Fig. 6) 6. Under the Clear Coat heading, choose Spot Color from the drop down menu. 7. Under the Clear Coat Passes heading, choose Two-Pass. In the Clear Coat Spot Color Name box, type in the name of the spot color that was created earlier, Curls Spot. Note: The Clear Coat Color Spot Name is case-sensitive. 8. For Two-Pass, you will need to register a coating form to the engine by naming it. In the Clear Coat Form Name box, type Black Swirls Spot. 9. At your imagepress C1+ digital printing system, load your media in the Stack Bypass Tray and select the Media tab. From the Media Type box, select the type of media you loaded. 10. Under the Paper Source heading, choose Stack Bypass. Click OK, then Print, and then Print again. On the Command WorkStation, you ll see your document begin to print. 7 TWO-PASS PRINTING OPTION 7 To Print the Clear Toner 1. Remove the printed media from the output tray and insert it back into the Stack Bypass with the printed side facing up. 2. On the user interface of the engine, press the arrow in the top right of the screen to scroll through the menu choices. Click the Coating button. (Fig. 7) 3. Select the Clear Coat Form Comp button, then click the Settings button under the Front Side heading. Figure 7: Coating Button 4. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and select Black Swirls Spot and click OK, and then Done. 5. Press the Paper Select button and choose the Stack Bypass. 6. Click the Start Coating button. The engine will start the coating process and complete the second pass. To create and use a custom spot-color swatch: 1.
