1 Spring 2019 Turnitin Instructions Students are required to submit their dissertation, thesis, or doctoral project through Turnitin. After the document has been ran through Turnitin, your committee chair must verify that they have seen the originality report and approve of the document. Verification of the originality report can be ed to the Documents Specialist at How to Run a Document through Turnitin: The Graduate School has a Turnitin account that students may use to run their document. Students may also have their committee chair run their document on their behalf. The following details how a student can run their report through the Graduate School link. If you already know how to submit your document through Turnitin and download the report, see the final page for the Class ID. Creating your Turnitin Account To begin creating your account click on this link After clicking on the link, you should see in the top right corner the option to Create Account. If you already have an account, skip this step and click Log In in the top right corner.

2 After clicking on Create Account, Scroll down to a section that says Create a New Account and click on Student. You will then be taken to a page where you will be asked to fill out your information. The first thing it will ask you is for the Class ID and Enrollment key. See the final page of these instructions for the Class ID. To obtain the Enrollment Key, you will need to contact the Documents Specialist. You will also be asked for your . Please use your USM . After entering all your information, you will be brought to a page that looks similar to this:

3 Running your Document and Obtaining your Originality Percentage If you already have a Turnitin account, after logging in you will need to select on Enroll in a Class and enter the Class ID and Enrollment Key. For those just creating a new account, you have already enrolled in the class and do not need to do it again. Now that you have enrolled in the class, click on the Class Name. Then click on the blue button that says Submit. Give your submission a title and upload your file by selecting on Choose from this Computer and then select the file containing your dissertation, thesis, or doctoral project. After choosing the file, select Upload. Once it is done processing, which could take a couple minutes, click on Confirm. You will then be able to Return to the Assignment List where you will be able to view your originality percentage. Click on the blue number for a more detailed report of the things that Turnitin has flagged as plagiarism.

4 How to download your Turnitin Report for your Committee Chair Your percentage may take time to process, but after it processes you will be able to view your report. Click on the percentage after it processes. After clicking on the number, your Turnitin report will popup. The Turnitin report will highlight various parts of your document and provide details as to where the highlighted text originated from. You will be able to download by clicking on the download button on the right hand tool bar. A box will popup. Select Current View. This will begin the download of the originality report. Once the download finishes, save it to your computer and it to your committee chair to review. Things to Keep in Mind Your originality report cannot exceed 25%. If it does exceed that amount, your committee chair will need to provide some justification for the high percentage. The Documents Specialist will not review your document with a Turnitin percentage that exceeds that amount without justification. If you need to run your document through Turnitin again, you will need to contact the Documents Specialist to clear out your original submission. Otherwise, it will get flagged as 100% plagiarism.

5 Please allow five business days for the Document Specialist to clear out your submission. Please limit your resubmissions to two times. We recommend that students upload everything at once and not go chapter by chapter to check for plagiarism. Turnitin may flag your title page and copyright page as being plagiarized. You can exclude these pages in your upload. If you ran your document through a different account (such as your school s or another university s account), you will need to contact the account administrator and have them clear your submission before running it through the Graduate School s account.
