2 Using Turnitin via AUTonline Use this guide if your lecturer has requested you to submit your assignments into Turnitin via AUTonline /Blackboard. If you are not sure please check with your lecturer before attempting to submit your assignment. How do I know what a Turnitin assignment looks like? All Turnitin assignments in AUTonline/Blackboard can be identified by the Turnitin assignment logo. Student Usage Students can submit papers to Turnitin through AUTonline. To submit your assignment/work you will need to login to Blackboard and then: 1. Click Assignments (or another link as directed by your lecturer) within your course (see i). i. Click assignments to open your course Assignments page. 2. Turnitin Assignments for this course will display on the screen. ii. The assignment will appear with the Turnitin logo next to it.

3 To submit a paper to an assignment: 1. Click the View/Complete link under the relevant assignment. (see iii) iii. Click to open the paper submission form or view your submission results When you click View you will then see the following Window: Click the link "Show Details" to see additional information about the assignment or to access Originality Reports and marked papers once you have submitted your assignment. 2. Click the submit icon to begin submitting your assignment. Select the file upload from the drop down menu (eg submit a paper by file upload) 3. Enter a title for your paper. 4. Click the browse button to locate the file you want to submit. 5. Click Upload. The content of the file you are submitting will display on the screen. You will be asked to confirm the text displayed on the screen is the text you wish to submit. Look over all the information and make sure that it is correct.

4 6. To confirm the submission, click Submit which will finalize the submission. 7. You will then see a message confirming that you have successfully submitted this paper and a copy of your Turnitin Digital Receipt (You may wish to save this or print it out for future reference. About the originality report If your lecturer has given students access to view their originality report, then you can view your submission and report by clicking first on Show Details and then on the assignment s Originality Report icon (a coloured icon at the bottom right) and the report will appear a few minutes after submission. If there is a delay your report icon will appear greyed out until the time period has elapsed, after which time the report will appear. iv. Click on the Show Details link to view the report. v. Click on the green box next to the percentage to see the Report.

5 Originality Report The report is divided into three sections which includes: submission information, similarity index, percentage matches for text that matches other sources, and also the original submission with the matching text highlighted. If your originality report returns a low Overall Similarity Index, it may be that your reference list doesn t have any matching text, and you may have a problem as it would be unusual for you to have a completely unique list of references on a topic. If you exclude your bibliography and it doesn t reduce the percentage of your matching text, then you have a problem with the way your have formatted your bibliography. If you exclude quotes and they don t exclude, then check there are quotation marks before and after the quote. If you take a sentence from a source and switch around a few words and add a few of your own it is still plagiarising. You need to either put the source sentence in quotation marks (if the quote contributes in a special way to your argument), or put the idea in your OWN words and place an intext citation near your expression of the idea e.g. Smith (1999, p.22) contends that graduates attending at least two social activities per term have better grades in their final exams. The originality report will show the submitted assignment, and the related matching text links side by side. You can view matching text by clicking on the number next to the specific text match. The percentage of text matching from the source will show. A link to the original website or submission will be displayed. You can click on the link to view the original source. Q & A What is Turnitin and how does it work? Turnitin is a web-based plagiarism detection tool, which is being widely implemented in universities and schools/colleges. It searches the current and archived internet, subscription services and papers submitted by other students to identify any similarities between text. This tool is available through Blackboard to help detect plagiarism in student text assignments. What type of files can be submitted in Turnitin? The following file types are acceptable: Word, Word Perfect, Post Script, PDF, HTML, RTF and Plain Text. Note that PowerPoint presentations and Microsoft work files are not acceptable. Is there a file size limit for submitting assignments in Turnitin? Yes there is, 10MB Do I get confirmation that my assignment has been sent? Yes, you will receive Turnitin's digital receipt (giving you a Paper ID number) as well as the text submitted to Turnitin which you can print off for your records.

6 Why can't I see my originality report? This can be for a number of reasons. Your lecturer may have set up the Turnitin assignment to not allow you to view the originality report. Your lecturer may have set up the Turnitin assignment to allow originality reports to be produced on the due date (when all assignments should be in). Contact your lecturer for more advice and ensure that you have read the instructions given with the assignment. How long does Turnitin take to produce an originality report? This does depend on the size of your assignment; it can take anything from ten minutes for a single assignment to up to an hour for a dissertation. Other factors include how many others happen to be submitting assignments at the same time. Some larger files can take up to 24 hours to be processed. Can other students view my originality report? No. Can I submit multiples files at one time? No you can't, you can only submit one file. You cannot send an assignment which is broken down into different files at one time. I think I have uploaded the wrong assignment. What can I do? Before you submit any piece of work, Turnitin shows you an electronic copy of the document you are about to submit. Check this carefully. If it is correct, click the 'yes-submit' button. If not, you have the option to go back and select the correct document for upload. If you know you have submitted the wrong assignment, you need to contact your lecturer as soon as possible. Your lecturer can arrange for you to reload your assignment. Note that it is important for you to resubmit your assignment with the identical details (name, title etc) as the first submission. WEBSITES for more info:
