1 1 Facebook 101 Getting started with Facebook u u u Creating a Facebook account and Facebook Basics (This instruction guide was created for members of Lions Clubs New Zealand only and is not for general publication or distribution! ) 1

2 2 Introduction What is Facebook? Facebook is a very popular social networking site that allows you to make connections, share interests, join groups and follow pages that interest you. You can look at photos, see what your friends and family are up to, and tell them how you feel about it! As you may have heard, Facebook is becoming an increasing popular platform for social interaction and is impacting our experience with online information and sharing. Setting up your own Facebook? Although there are mulitple pages to this document, it is because there are a lot of illustrations. Setting up Facebook is a short process. Promise! Creating a Facebook account is free. All you need to get started is an address, internet connection and a few free minutes. I don t have an ! You can easily set up a free account at What can I do on Facebook? Facebook is an instant on- line social sharing network where you can communicate with your friends and family anywhere in the world. You can share photographs of you grandchildren or your favourite travel tips, follow groups that interest you and receive up- to- the minute information. Overall, Facebook is a simple way to keep in touch with friends, family and up to date with events around you. Three Types of Facebook Pages There are three types of Facebook Pages. One is a Profile page this means it is a Facebook page for a person. For Example David Dawick has a Facebook profile page. The second is a fan page This a a page for a company or organisation. You like the page and can follow the company or organisation s activities. For example Lions Clubs New Zealand have a Facebook group page. The third Group page where you can join people similar interests or an organisation The main difference between is: with a Profile Page you have friends people request each other and accept each to be Facebook friends. With a Fan Page, the page is open to all to like anyone can like a fan page if they have a Facebook account With a Group Page you request to become a member of that group 2

3 3 This is a step by step illustrated instruction on how to create a Facebook Profile Page and use the basic search features to connect with friends and like groups Step 1: Search the internet for Facebook by typing into the search bar as seen below or if you are reading this on your computer and are connected to the internet, simply click the underlined the underlined link Step: 2 one you ve typed in the search, press enter on your key board and you will be presented with this page: This is the sign up page where you can create your own free Facebook account 3

4 4 Step 3: Enter your details as per the Sign Up section circled below. This is where you will need your address, you also need to create a password for your Facebook account, make sure you write it down somewhere! Step 4: Once details are entered, click the Sign Up button circled below 4

5 5 Step 5: Facebook will then take you through three steps We will just skip these for now by clicking Skip this step circled below 5

6 6 Step 6: Step 7: Enter you re details or simply Skip this step too you can add this information at a later time 6

7 7 Step 7: Next, adding a profile picture The third step is adding your profile picture (as Brad has done) Having a profile picture enables people to recognise your Facebook profile, but it is not compulsory. Your three options 1.Upload from your computer if you have image files / photographs on your computer click the upload a photo option 2.Take a photo Have a camera on your computer and know how to use it? Click the option Take a photo 3.The easiest option - skip you will not have a profile picture at this stage but can update this later 7

8 8 Step 8: To use Facebook you need to confirm your new Facebook account Facebook wants to know you are a real person so you need to go to your account, the account that you used in the Sign Up process. The from Facebook should look a bit like this... Step 9: Open this and click the green Get Started button. 8

9 9 Step 10: Once you have clicked the Get Started button you will be taken to this page below Then click on your name in the top right hand corner. As the messy circle highlights! This will bring you to your new and exciting Facebook Page! Congratulations Now you can start to create your own Facebook Profile! Woo hoo! 9

10 10 Your Facebook Page Basics Finding Friends There are a number of ways that you can find friends Searching : typing into the Facebook search bar... In the below example I am searching David Dawick Once you ve entered the name press the Enter button on your keyboard... you can then choose to look at THEIR Facebook page, send them a private message or add as a friend (these options are represented by the orange markers) 10

11 11 As there are over 80 million people on Facebook, it helps to check you have the correct person before adding them as a friend or sending them a message! So click on the name and their profile page will appear we can see this is the Lions Clubs NZ executive officer David Dawick from his profile picture, recognising his friends and Lions Clubs logo To become friends you need to click Add Friend button marked in the above image. This does not automatically make you friends. It sends a Friend Request to that person and they must accept the request for you to become friends. 11

12 12 Now, find more friends by typing their names in the field below and hitting search icon Tip: There are a lot of people with the same name, add an extra detail to the seach, such as the place the live. For Example: David Dawick Auckland 12

13 13 Join the Lions Clubs New Zealand Facebook Page? Lions Clubs New Zealand has a Facebook page, this is a page that you can join and keep up to date with Lions activities. 1. In the search bar type Lions Clubs New Zealand and click the search icon. Then Click on the wording Lions Clubs New Zealand and you will be directed to this the Lions Clubs of New Zealand Facebook page. 13

14 14 Lions Clubs New Zealand s Facebook page is a Group Page to Join this page, click the like button as below Once you have clicked the like button you automatically become a fan of the page and are able to support and comment on the page. Scroll your mouse over various words on the Facebook page and interact with the posts. The best way to learn, is to play You won t be able to cause any damage to the page! Now try the search Heads Up for Kids : ) 14

15 15 Can my friends and family find me on Facebook? Yes, once you have created an account, other Facebook users will be able to search for you and friend request you. Someone has sent me a friend request? You will be able to see who has sent you a Friend Request by looking at your profile and clicking the icon below. If you have any request the names will appear and you can choose to accept the request or ignore it. The two other icons are for private messages and notifications about you and your friends This is where you can accept the friend request, by clicking Confirm or if you are not sure you want to become Facebook friends just yet you can choose Not Now as the arrow s point to below. You can also view who your mutal Facebook friends are by clicking the mutal friend information link marked below by the two dots 15

16 16 Who can see my page? (Optional) You can alter the settings of your Facebook profile so everyone can see it or pracitally no- one. To check your privacy settings and make alterations - Go to the home and click on the downwards arrow and then select privacy settings. From here you can go through the various settings and choose which settings suit you best. 16

17 17 How do I log out of Facebook? You can log out of your Facebook page like you do when you log out of your and other online accounts. Click the downward facing arrow next to the Home and select the Log Out option as shown in the image below and How do I login again?
