2 Microsoft Active Directory Microsoft Exchange A database that keeps track of all the user accounts and passwords in your organization. It allows you to store your user accounts and passwords in one protected location, improving your organization's security. Is a calendaring and mail server developed by Microsoft that runs exclusively on the Microsoft Windows Server product line. Novell Netware MS AD Novell GroupWise MS Exchange

3 WHY ARE WE MIGRATING? Novell is more rigid and inflexible More vendors write for MS Ability to implement MS Exchange End-point to endpoint solution AD Ability to have roaming profiles Better Support Ability to implement Sharepoint

4 END USER BENEFITS More end point security Off campus access to shares Off campus access to home directory More flexibility in System Management AD & Exchange Direct Access: Secured off campus access to network Self Service Password Reset will be more mobilefriendly archive via web client

9 ACTIVE DIRECTORY : WHAT TO EXPECT DURING MIGRATION Step 1: Computer must be joined to the AD domain Step 2: Local user profile must be joined to the AD Technical Support staff will visit each user to join computer to the AD domain User ID and password will remain the same User will continue to login using Novell client until the cutover NOTE: User must be present to successfully migrate local user profile to AD

10 ACTIVE DIRECTORY: WHAT TO EXPECT CUTOVER Once all users/workstations are joined to AD domain, Novell client will disappear Users will login to the network via the Windows login only Users ID and password will remain the same All H:\drive and S:\drive letters will remain the same

11 ACTIVE DIRECTORY : WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PREPARE? Cleanup desktop and any local files to minimize size of your local profile Save all files on your H:\drive Try to rename any network file names that are too long : MS has a limitation of 255 characters

13 EXCHANGE : WHAT TO EXPECT Current address will remain the same: User@citytech.cuny.edu Microsoft Outlook desktop client and Exchange web client will be used to access new At Cutover, will only be accessible via the web client until the Outlook desktop client is configured Tentative September

14 EXCHANGE: WHAT TO EXPECT No current Groupwise messages, calendar items, address books or contacts will be migrated over into the Exchange mailbox Groupwise will be up for 1 year: June 2017 Old Groupwise will be accessible via Users will have ability to forward messages from Groupwise to Exchange Groupwise Archive will also be accessible via Groupwise desktop client

15 EXCHANGE: KEEPING MY GROUPWISE Forward Groupwise messages that you want keep to Exchange Users can export personal address books and contacts and import into Exchange Possible solution to create PST files for archives and live mailbox messages which can be imported/ read from Exchange client Researching third party tools to manually migrate some messages
