Engineering Students Login Procedure Engineering sudents must enrol on the Engineering Password Management System to change their password. When you login for the first time, you will see the following screen: Click Next and you will be asked to choose 3 quesions to use as security questions in the future. page 6

Engineering Students: How to reset your password Once you have enrolled (se page 6), you can reset your password by clicking the Forgot my password link. You can only change your password when in the Engineering lab. You must be enrolled on the Engineering network to avail of this facility. Note: The School of Engineering has a dedicated website where you can find more information and support: page 7

Another way to enrol and reset your password, outside the Engineering labs, is using the Password Manager Website located at: Note: More resources for Engineering Students can be found at: page 8

Logging into the Wireless Network Eduroam is the wireless network available in ITT Dublin. In Google Chrome type Your username will differ, depending on which school you are in. Business and Humanities Students: Engineering Students: The password for the wireless network is the same as your network password. page 9

If you are connecting using a Windows laptop or Apple mobile device you should use the specially built Eduroam installer tool. This installer will automatically set up connectivity to eduroam. More information is available at page 10

Understanding Network and hard drives 1. Double-click the Computer icon on the desktop to see the different drives or content areas available. Hard Disk Drives Hard disk drives are located in the computer. The C drive is the hard drive of the machine where the applications are installed. This drive is only for the machine you are logged into. Some computers in the Engineering computer labs have a second partition (section) on the hard drive. On these computers the second partition is called the D drive. Information on this drive will be deleted on a regular basis and you should not use these drives for any personal storage. Devices with Removable Storage If you are using a removable storage device such as a USB key or a memory stick, this may appear as the E drive. The F drive is usually the CD\DVD drive (see page 13). page 11

Network Drives Network drives are drives stored in the college. In Computer, under the heading college Network Drives, you will see several drives listed. The most important one is your personal student drive which is identified by your student ID number. The letter of the drive where your personal folders appear will be different depending on which academic school you are in (e.g. for Engineering students it is on the H drive). Note: Your personal student drive is a permanent storage location where you should store all your college related documentation. This storage location is backed up on a nightly basis and is safe and secure. To exit Computer, click the close button on the task bar at the top/right of the screen: To start an application, e.g. MS Word, Excel, Google Chrome, click the Start icon at the lower left corner of the screen, and then click All Programs. A list of available programs will be displayed. Select the one you want to use and the application will start. page 12

About Removable Storage Devices There are many types of removable storage devices: Compact disks (CDs) and Digital Versatile Disks (DVDs) External hard drives Local hard drives USB sticks/memory cards The college network CD/DVD External Hard Drive Local Hard Drive usb stick Memory Card Students are responsible for ensuring their files are stored correctly. Students should store their files as directed by the relevant department technician responsible for computing. Using USB/Memory Sticks TIP: Save your student number or a telephone number in a.txt file on your device. This way you have some chance of its safe return to you if you lose your device. To ensure the correct use of USB/memory sticks, the following guidelines are provided: page 13

1. To use a USB/memory stick, insert it into a USB port on the PC. Wait for a few moments to allow the computer time to detect the device. 2. On the desktop, double-click the Computer icon. 3. The screen displayed shows all the storage areas available. page 14

4. To access your memory stick, double-click Removable Disk. The contents of the device will be displayed. (The drive letter may vary and may not necessarily be F.) 5. While you are working, you can save your files to this device by selecting the memory stick as the location and then File > Save as > [file name], from the menu bar: Note: You should only use a USB/memory stick to make a back-up copy of your files. 6. It is important, when you have finished saving your work to remove the USB device safely. Click the Show hidden icons icon at the lower right corner of the screen. page 15

7. Double-click the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon. 8. Select the Eject option. Note: Failure to remove a USB/memory stick correctly could seriously damage your files and hardware. If unsure, shut down the computer before removing it. 9. You will then be notified that it is safe to remove the hardware. 10. If these dialogue boxes are not displayed, log out and remove the memory stick. Note: A memory stick should not be removed while any file stored on it this in use. page 16

Storing your Files You should store all your work on your personal storage drive to ensure safe storage and backup of your files. Therefore you should avoid using the hard disk drives ( C or D drives) for file storage. However, when you are working on a file (especially large files) it may be faster and safer to work on a copy of the document on the hard disk drive temporarily. We therefore recommend the following: 1. Copy the file from your personal storage folder to the C drive. 2. Work on this copy of the file on the C drive. 3. When finished working, copy the revised file back to your personal storage folder and delete if from the C drive. Note: Never store your files on the Desktop as your file will not be available to you again once the PC is switched off. page 17

Using ITT Dublin does not have a college system. We let you use whatever address you want to be contacted on as your main point of contact with us. For example, if you already have a gmail or Hotmail address you can use it as your main contact while you are at ITT Dublin. However, you will need to ensure that the Institute is aware of the address you want to be contacted on so that you do not miss out on important notifications from your lecturers and other departments. For example, your exam pin number which is used to access your exam results will be sent to your address. In Moodle you will be able to enter your preferred contact address when setting up your Moodle profile. This will also update your address on our registration system. Instructions on how to do this are on page 19. page 18
