2 Welcome! This resume tutorial is designed to walk you through the process of developing a resume: step-by-step You will learn why a resume is so important and tips for creating the best resume for your job search
3 Introduction Your resume should provide a crisp, positive, and accurate overview of your work experience, job skills, and education. The purpose of your resume is to market your abilities to get an interview. Your resume is just like life: You never get a 2 nd chance to make a GREAT 1 ST IMPRESSION!! So makes yours really count!!
4 What is a RESUME? A way to match a job applicant to an opening A factual presentation of yourself An opportunity to promote yourself A tool to use to entice an employer to interview you!
5 Getting Started Brainstorm and write down the following: Contact information Your Career Objective Your education Your work and/or volunteer experience Your skills: typing, languages, communication Any certificates or licenses you hold Any awards or recognitions you received
6 Contact Information Should always be positioned at the very top of the page Should stand out prominently Should be typed in a larger font Should include the following: First & Last Name Physical Address Address Cell & Home Phone List preferred number first

8 Common Contact Information Pitfalls You must update your contact information if it has changed before sending out your resume! Nothing looks worse than an employer getting a disconnected message when he/she tries to call you for an interview. Other things that put off employers are full voic boxes, inappropriate greetings, music in the background or noisy kids screaming. If you list an address on your resume make sure that it is appropriate. Nothing looks worse on a resume than an address like sassygurl222@hotmail.com. You can get a new address for free from hotmail, yahoo, gmail or other services. It should include your first and last name, with some numbers only. Example: JaneSmith32343@gmail.com
9 Career Objective Should be clear and concise Should be one sentence long Should capture what type of job you are seeking Example: To utilize my education and skills in order to obtain an entry-level position in management
10 Education Should contain the following: Name of institution Degree, program, or certificate Location of institution Dates of Enrollment Relevant coursework completed 1. List currently enrolled school first 2. List other higher education institutions where you have either completed a degree, diploma or certificate. 3. Do not list highschool- the assumption is you went to HS if you have a college degree

12 Work Experience Should contain the following: Job title Name of organization Dates of employment Clear, concise, action-oriented duties that you performed EXAMPLE: Publix Supermarket Orlando, FL Cashier 2/2003-Present Handle money, debit and credit card transactions Provide excellent customer service
13 Volunteer Experience Volunteer Experience Counts! Can list under work experience Same format as work experience Should contain the following: Job title (indicating you were volunteering) Name of organization Dates of experience Clear, concise, action-oriented duties that you performed
14 Licenses & Certificates List all professional licenses and certificates your currently hold Some employers are looking specifically for licensed professionals If you forget to list it on your resume, you may be overlooked for an interview EXAMPLES: Certified Medical Assistant Exp 2010 American Association of Medical Assistants Licensed Security Officer, Class D Exp 2015 Florida Division of Licensing
15 Awards & Recognition List all awards you ve received in school, work, or as a volunteer This shows that you have been recognized for outstanding work Example: 2004 Award of Excellence, Customer Service
16 Presentation & Style Use a readable font rather than one that is decorative: Arial is the best Maintain font sizes between 11 and 12 DO NOT USE RESUME TEMPLATES!!! They will be harder to change and edit later!! Just use tab and enter functions, along with some bolding and lists when needed Avoid graphics and shading Use bulleted lists in employment and sections when listed Set your margins according to the amount of information you need to fit on a page. Page margins can be as small as.5 on all sides.
17 Do s & Don ts Items of controversy- Avoid listing political affiliation, controversial employers or activities or religious beliefs. Personal Information- Listing your age, height, weight, race, ethnicity, or marital status is not necessary. It may provide open invitations for discrimination. Personal References- Remove personal references from your resume. Just list References available upon request Salary Requirements- Do not mention your salary desires or wage history. Errors- Check your resume SEVERAL TIMES for accuracy, consistency, correct use of grammar, and spelling. Have someone proofread your resume. Verb tense- This is one of the biggest mistakes made on a resume!! Use present tense for describing jobs you currently hold. Change to past verb tense for jobs you no longer hold. Example: Present= Assist, Past= Assisted
18 Methods of Delivery - in this day and age is the quickest and easiest way to get a resume to an employer Online- many employers require that you log on to their website and complete an on-line application and upload your resume Fax- is quick and easy, to fax your resume go to local One- Stop Center, Kinko s, or the Library Mail- is very slow, not really used anymore, unless specified by the employer

Free services- hotmail, yahoo, gmail address should be some combination of your first and last name Example- johndoe123@hotmail.com To attach your resume to an message follow these instructions: Click on either attach or paper clip icon Browse for the file, go to where you saved it, in My Documents, Desktop, or on disk Click OK Make sure it is attached, then send!
20 Online Resumes Some employers have websites where you can submit your resume online These websites usually give you the option of either uploading your resume (follow the same instructions as attaching an ), copying and pasting it into an online document, or retyping it using the fields provided When copying and pasting a resume, it will usually need to be reformatted Bullets and tables do not copy and paste well
21 Follow - Up The number one mistake people make when sending out their resumes to employers is that they do not follow-up Don t just assume that the employer received your resume. What if the fax or didn t go through? Follow-up with a phone call! If you don t know the phone number, look it up in the phone book or on-line Phone tips: Introduce yourself and ask the employer for a few free minutes Ask if he/she your resume If yes, inquire about when they might be contacting candidates for interviews Ask the employer for any questions they may have. Be prepared to answer those questions. Be polite and professional
22 You have the tools necessary to create your own resume, so get started! Open Microsoft Word and start typing up your resume Remember- no resume templates!! Save your resume on your desktop and a flash drive Send it to your Career Services Director and have them take a look!
