2 Microsoft Exchange using LakerMail What is Microsoft Exchange? Microsoft Exchange is a unique technology based around that allows you to do more than just send and receive . It also allows you to store a remote copy of other various important personal data, such as calendar events and contacts. What are the benefits of using Microsoft Exchange over typical mail servers? Most mail servers are based off of technology designed for UNIX-based operating systems, based on a much antiqued design. This does not necessarily mean that these servers are bad, they are just outdated and lack many features in newer mail server technology. One major advantage is the Push Mail feature. This allows your phone or computer to maintain a silent connection (one that rarely sends/receives data) to allow the server to keep in touch. The advantage of this, is when new mail arrives, it can be pushed, or sent immediately, to your mobile device or computers inbox. Power is saved compared to traditional methods of polling (checking the inbox every so many minutes or hours), and communication is virtually instant. In addition to push features, Microsoft Exchange also allows you to store your contacts and calendar events, also which are pushed. A prime example of this, is if you need to a contact, and need to save their to your contacts for when you have a chance to use a computer, Microsoft Exchange allows you to keep your contacts synced among all devices on the server. If your phone is connected to the server, adding the contact to your phone would later allow instant access to that contact from your desktop or laptop computer running Microsoft Outlook. What devices support Microsoft Exchange? All desktop and laptop computers running Microsoft Windows with Microsoft Outlook are supported. Some versions of Outlook Express may not be supported. Computers running Apple OS X Snow Leopard will support Microsoft Exchange. Certain mail clients for Linux/Unix-based operating systems allow use of Exchange. All Windows Mobile devices (Phones, Personal Digital Assistants, and Pocket PCs) have direct Exchange support. Apple s iphone and ipod Touch devices support connectivity to Microsoft Exchange. Although LakerMail does not support it, through the use of an extender, RIM Blackberry devices are able to connect to Exchange servers through the Blackberry extender. Connecting to LakerMail from a Windows Mobile device This guide will take you step by step through connecting to LakerMail through a Windows Mobile based device. Note: The instructions used are based on Windows Mobile 6 and may vary for older devices. This varies by device, but is typically done by pressing the mail icon on your keyboard, pressing the mail option on your today screen, or choosing Mail from the start menu. From the screen, choose Setup E- mail. Enter your LakerMail and password (which was setup when you activated your account).

Try to get settings automatically from the Internet Read Privacy Statement online Previous Next Under Your provider, choose Exchange Server Your provider: Exchange server Previous Next Outlook with Exchange To set up Outlook to synchronize directly with your organization s Exchange server, click Next. Previous Next Your address should already be filled out, and settings detection should be disabled. Just click next. Enter address address: You@student.lscc.edu Attempt to detect settings automatically Back Next You should be prompted with a form for Server Address. Enter pod51000.outlook.com. Edit Server Settings Server Address pod51000.outlook.com This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection.

4 Back Next Once again, you should get a login screen. Your username should be the first part of your address. Change it to your full address. Leave Domain blank. User Information Username User@student.lscc.edu Password ******************** Domain Save password Back Next Choose what you wish to sync. It s recommended to select all options, as this doubles as a form of backup for your phones data, and allows access to this data from any sync source. Once done, press Finish. Edit Server Settings Contacts Calendar Tasks Finish Menu Outlook will begin the synchronization process, and may show a dialog box: ActiveSync Exchange server pod51000.outlook.com must enforce security policies on your device to continue synchronizing. Do you want to continue?ok Cancel That s it! Your device should now be synchronized with the LakerMail servers, and upon receiving new messages, they should be instantly delivered to your device.
