4 This unit This unit teaches the following: A understand the uses and features of multimedia products. B design multimedia products. C develop and test multimedia products. D review the finished multimedia products.

5 Assessment There will be 4 assignments. These include: 7 pass grades. 6 Merit grades. 4 Distinction grades.

6 Question What is multimedia?

7 Multimedia Video clips. Graphics (images). Sound effects. Music. Animation sequences. These are all assets used in a multimedia product.

8 Question What is the purpose of multimedia?

9 Purpose of multimedia products Present content to and engage an audience using a collection of assets to provide an enhanced multi-sensory, experience.

10 Types of multimedia product There are 2 types of product that we will use in this unit. 1. Linear product, Video or automated PowerPoint presentation. 2. Interactive product, e.g. web page etc.

11 Multimedia products To be successful, a multimedia product must be suitable for the intended purpose and audience (Linear) or user requirements (interactive product)

14 Computer games Computer games contain many assets and all of the ones we have listed previously are probably used in most games. Some game authoring software Game maker Multimedia fusion Flash

15 Graphical images Types of graphical image include Bitmaps (jpg, bmp, png etc) Sprites An image sprite is a collection of images put into a single image. Animated Gif See next slide

16 Graphical images cont - An animated GIF is a popular type of digital image. As the name implies, animated GIFs are images in the GIF file format that appear to move or change. Animated GIFs are often used for banner ads, in place of much larger full motion video files, and as interesting accents to homepages. Graphics Interchange Format (GIF).

17 3-D modelling In recent times the use of 3-D images are popular and can enhance a multimedia product. There are 2 popular 3-D modelling programs used via the internet- 1. Google Sketchup (Free) 2. Blender (free)

18 Tools There are a number of software programs used to create and change assets used in multimedia products. Can you name a few?

19 Assets list Asset Video clips Graphics (Images) Sound effects Music Animation sequences Programs Microsoft moviemaker Adobe photoshop, paint. Audacity, adobe soundbooth Windows media player, quicktime Adobe flash

20 Creating an Animation We are going to create an animated banner which can be used on a web page. For this we will use Adobe Flash.

21 Flash animation Starting Flash and Creating a New Project Click Start -> Programs -> CS3 -> Adobe Flash CS3 Professional

22 Flash animation Select File/New

23 Flash animation 1. Click Templates tab 2. Select 468x60 (banner) Click OK

24 Flash animation You should see something like this. Select a background colour (NOT the one I chose!)

25 Flash animation 1. Click the Text Tool button 2. Click and drag a text frame on the background 3. Type your first text message. Perhaps a question e.g. Need legal advice?

26 Flash animation 1. After you have entered your text, select the pointer tool button. 2. Click the text frame 3. Choose a colour for the text 4. Click and drag to set the size. You want the text to fill the banner space

27 Flash animation 1. When you have the text as you want it, right click on the text frame and select Convert to symbol. This will allow us to animate the text..

28 Flash animation 1. Click OK

29 Flash animation 1. Right click on frame 10 and select Insert Keyframe

30 Flash animation 1. You should now see something like this. 2. Ensure the text frame is selected. 3. Select Alpha from the colour dropdown

31 Flash animation 1. Click and drag Alpha value to 0%. The text should fade away

32 Flash animation Adding a Tween A tween is an animation to change the contents of one key frame into the contents of another. If the text in the first key frame is red and the text in the last key frame is blue inserting a tween will cause the text to gradually change from red to blue in the intervening frames. Here we have set the last key frame to be transparent (0% alpha) so the text gradually fades out when we add the tween.

33 Flash animation 1. Right click on frame 5 and select Create Motion Tween

34 Flash animation 1. You should now see an arrow between frame 1 and frame 10

35 Flash animation 1.. To test if all is well, select Play from the Control menu. You should see your text fade away

36 Flash animation Make sure you save your animation. We will extend this later.

37 Activity Create an animated multimedia banner. You should include more than 1 type of media.
