4 Family Planning Saves Lives Family planning allows women to make choices about their own fertility. It saves lives and reduces suffering by preventing high risk pregnancies and a woman s likelihood of resorting to unsafe abortions. Voluntary family planning is also essential in helping women achieve gender equality, contribute economically, and engage politically. WHY There is currently 215 million women globally who have an unmet need for family planning. A woman is considered to have an unmet need if she wants to limit or space her births but is relying on a less 4 effective traditional method or has no access to modern methods.

5 Family Planning in India WHY The largest unmet need for family planning in the world is in India, with 45 million women not having access to modern methods. Only an estimated 54% of 15 to 49 year-old women use contraception. There are also vast inequalities in access, with lower income women and couples receiving less family planning care due to economic barriers, lack of knowledge and lack of access to information and services. Low female literacy levels also hamper use of contraception. There is a clear need to develop new ways of providing information and services to women and couples currently not served by the existing traditional service delivery mechanisms. 5

6 The Project Concept To research a mobile service addressing the challenge women, especially non/semi-literate women, face in accessing family planning information. To design an Android application that provides family planning information in WHY 1) visual 2) audio and 3) multimedia form 6

13 Camera Scan A single-click feature which enables the users to scan an image using the mobile phone photo function (for example, a leaflet/poster) that links to multimedia content and plays audio or video files. 17 Field Research Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh PROJECT Mobile Harvest visited Chanderi, a town in Madhya Pradesh, to interact with some of the anganwadi workers and end users. They conducted interviews and had a small workshop where the users filled in questionanaries. This formed the basis of the User research which helped during the designing and development of the application. 17

21 Service Delivery Innovation Technology, especially mobile phones, in low-resource settings present huge opportunities for family planning information dissemination. Especially interfaces with minimal or no text that instead utilize graphical, audio and/or numerical components have been shown to be useful for users with low levels of literacy WHO Family planning successes have historically always involved finding new ways of getting information and services to clients whether through a new method, a new model of delivery or a new way of analysing information. Given the unprecedented growth in mobile phone adoption in India, combined with the high levels of unmet need for family planning, mobile-based information dissemination has demonstarted potential for effective knowledge transfer. 21

23 User Persona Adoption of the App PRIYA 32 years old Lives in a town Has two children WHO Priya visits the health clinic, where she receives a leaflet that she photographs using her mobile phone camera. This immediately links her to information videos about family planning, in the privacy of her home. She can receive an alert from a health worker that new content has been added, and can access it at a time and place that is convenient for her. She then researches the mobile service for more image guided audio information about contraceptive methods, and shares it with her friend. 23 She also has a query about condom use that she records and sends to her health worker. She then registers her interest in accessing condoms, which shows up on a map in real time at the health centre level.
