1 Create Your Own Bozeman Video YOU MAY USE ANY VIDEO PROGRAM TO MAKE YOUR BOZEMAN VIDEO BELOW ARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING SCREECAST-O-MATIC which is a program that I really like, but you do NOT have to use it you may use any program you are comfortable with. It is even okay to record yourself on the video! Be creative and fun with this part of the project! Video Requirements 1. The video may be no longer than 10 minutes. 2. The majority of the screen should be diagrams with very little text not to exceed a maximum of 10 words per screen. 3. Transitions or gradual additions must be used in your video this means that items should pop up on the video when appropriate a full screen should not come up all at once. 4. Your voice must accompany the video I recommend typing out a script and practicing before recording. 5. Your target audience is a 7 th grade life science class the information provided in your video should be easily understood by a 7 th grader! 6. Do NOT use words or diagrams that you cannot explain or have not explained. 7. You must use unlabeled, generic or self-generated diagrams if labeling is required then YOU must do it as part of your video. 8. The purpose of your video is to teach a 7 th grade life science student how the cell cycle is controlled by internal and external mechanisms, and how loss of this control can lead to cancer. Your video should stress the importance of and include information for: The cell cycle is a complex set of stages that is highly regulated. The cell cycle is directed by internal controls or checkpoints, and each is of particular significance because it checks for certain crucial events to have occurred before the go signal is given for cell division. G 1 checkpoint G 2 checkpoint M checkpoint Internal and external signals provide stop-and-go signs at each cell cycle checkpoint. MPF PDGF Cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinases control the cell cycle. Cancer results from disruptions in cell cycle control. You may find the following animations useful: control_of_the_cell_cycle.html (this one is fabulous)!

2 Screencast-O-Matic Instructions Step 1: If you are using screencast-o-matic, you must first create your review powerpoint presentation. Be careful with your text and diagrams if they are too close to the bottom of the slide, then the video recording system will cut them off! NOTICE: For the free version you are only allowed to have ONE video saved you may not save a video and then start a new one this can be frustrating! Step 2: Open up your already fully created powerpoint on your computer. Step 3: Be sure the volume is turned up on your computer and that you know where to speak into the microphone I must be able to hear your voice recording! Step 3: Copy and paste the following URL into your internet search engine: NOTICE: This is a FREE service as long as the video is SHORTER THAN 15 MINUTES and your video should be no longer than 10 minutes! Creating an account is NOT necessary! Step 4: From the screencast-o-matic web page, click on Start Recording in the upper right corner. See the arrow below. Step 5: Be patient while the recorder loads onto your computer this takes a minute or so. If the recorder does not load, download and install the app from the start up screen. See the arrow below to download and install the app. See additional screen shots on next page for help with downloading the app look for the arrows!

5 Step 6: When the download is completed, you should see a large cut-out type box appear on your screen (like the one above. Your powerpoint must be set to slide show before you begin your recording. Toggle to your powerpoint and play the slide show (click on slide show, and then click from beginning so that it covers your ENTIRE computer screen).

6 Step 7: Once your PPT slideshow is playing, resize the screencast-o-matic cut out box to fit your powerpoint. Step 9: Your recording controls are at the bottom of the screen. Click on the red circle to start recording. You can start and stop recording as often as you like by hitting the pause button, but you CANNOT back up easily without starting completely over so type out exactly what you would like to say for each slide. Step 10: Transition your slides as you speak this should include diagrams and pictures (they should NOT all pop up at the same time) and it should also include your slide transitions to the next slide. Speak up be sure that we can hear your text. Step 11: When you have finished your video click DONE. Step 12: Follow these instructions for publishing it as a YouTube video (you may need a gmail account: o Click on Publish to YouTube o Give your video an appropriate title and description. o Be sure the video is set as public. o Click on upload to Youtube follow the instructions on your computer screen. You will ultimately be given a video number that you can to your teacher so she can watch the video! o If you have difficulty uploading to youtube you may choose to publish to video file this file will be very large and you will need to save it on a flash drive and bring it to your teacher the day it is due. You will not be able to this file! Step 13: After you publish or save your file, click done with this recording from the screencast-o-matic web page. You are finished! Play your video to be sure you can SEE EVERYTHING and HEAR EVERYTHING if you don t like the final product start again!
