3 GETTING STARTED Log in with your CWL or CLAS account: Faculty of Arts and other departments: clas.ubc.ca/prod Faculty of Medicine: clas.ubc.ca/med Faculty of Education (TEO Program): clas.ubc.ca/ed Sauder School of Business: clas.ubc.ca/sauder Demo/Sandbox Courses: clas.ubc.ca/demo Note: UBC users login : for UBC users with a CWL. External users login : external users who do not have a UBC CWL. 3
4 CLAS USER INTERFACE The page to interact with the uploaded videos will look as follows: Download Video Annotation Trends Playlist Annotation ilter Annotations ownload nnotation General Comments Video Playlist - This option allows you to select and play the video you wish to view and annotate. Once you select the video you wish to view, click on the play button to start the video (Note: it may take a few minutes for the video to load). Trends The trend line indicates where annotations have been provided in the video. Places in the trend line that are extremely bright indicate there is a high concentration of annotation notes. General Comments Comments are written on the video as a whole rather than a specific segment of the video. Search Search key words, tags, names 4
5 At any point in time, you may hover the cursor over the video to bring up the video options. These options include stopping/pausing the video, adjusting the volume, video scrubbing, and viewing the video in full screen mode. Rotate Screen Scrub bar Fullscreen Play/Pause RECORD, UPLOAD, MANAGE VIDEOS 3.1 UPLOAD AND MANAGE VIDEOS IN CLAS *This feature is only available if your instructor had requested this to be turned on. Volume Users can upload or record a video directly within CLAS and have it automatically upload to the video management page. On the top menu bar, (if it is enabled) click on upload & manage video. You can choose to (1) upload a video file or (2) record a video directly inside CLAS. 5
6 Switch between file upload and self-recording Requirements for Recording mode: Upgrade to Flash 11.9+: On iphone/ipad, enable microphone access for your browsers (settings à privacy à microphone) A spinning wheel will appear indicating that the video is uploading. Remember not to close the browser or press the back button at this point. After the video is finished uploading, it may take up to a few hours to convert, depending on the file size. It usually takes approximately 1 hour to convert a 100MB video. The file will appear in the list of videos once it is done converting. 6
7 Once the video is uploaded, you will see it under Unassigned videos. By default, the videos will only be visible to yourself until you assign it to a course/collection, group or user. Click on unassigned (no group selected) and select the course/collection, group, or user the video should be assigned to. A pop up message will appear. Click OK. Once the page is refreshed, the video will no longer be under the unassigned category. 3.2 RECORD AND UPLOAD A VIDEO IN CLAS Note: This feature is only available if turned on by the instructor 7

9 ANNOTATING VIDEOS There are three ways of adding an annotation to a video: 1. Type something in the text box next to Timeline annotations. The video will automatically pause once you click on the text box. Click +Post to add a quick text annotation at the current timestamp of the video. 2. Click +Post without typing anything inside the text box to create a blank text annotation. The annotation will be marked as private by default. 3. Click Advanced options, a window with more options for your annotation will appear on the right side of the video. You can pause the video while working on your annotation, or you may leave the video playing. Add Annotation Attach You can choose to create a text-only annotation or attach a self-recorded video to it. Private Checking this box will make your annotations not viewable by other students. Tags You can attach a unique keyword or term to an annotation to allow it to be found later by browsing or searching for the tag. This feature will also allow you to search for all videos that may be tagged with this unique keyword or term. Description This is where you provide your annotation notes. Save Make sure to save your annotation! Note: You can click on add annotation to bookmark different points in the video without including text as a way to flag important points. Annotations with no text will be marked as private and is only visible to yourself. 9
10 4.1 EMBEDDING LINKS IN ANNOTATIONS AND COMMENTS Links added in annotations or general comments are now automatically turned into a clickable link. The link will open in a new window. The link must start with VIDEO ANNOTATIONS Annotations and comments can be added as video annotations in addition to text. You can record a video directly inside the annotation/comment box and add it to the video timeline or upload a video or audio file from your computer. Annotations added as a video will have a video icon beside the annotation. When adding an annotation or comment, choose video to record a video of yourself directly within CLAS. Click Allow when prompted to enable Flash settings. 10
11 Note: When adding a video annotation/comment, click on allow when the Adobe Flash Player Settings pop up. Then, say something to detect your noise level. 4.3 CREATING THREADED ANNOTATIONS/COMMENTS To create threaded annotations or comments, hover over the annotation/comment that you want to reply to, and click Reply. This will open up a new annotation/comment window that will be automatically threaded to the original post when submitted. Private Reply will hide the reply from other students, so only the instructor will be able to see the reply. 4.4 VIEWING OTHER PEOPLE S ANNOTATIONS Filter Legend Annotation Filter Change the annotations you want to view by toggling between mine or all mine à Your annotations all à Everyone s annotations (Including yours) Annotation Legend The color of the annotation arrow indicates the user s status: GREY Anonymous annotations (if feature is enabled) BLUE Your annotations BLACK Instructor/TAs ORANGE Peers (students) Unread Private 11
12 Hover Hovering over an annotation will automatically bring up a preview of the exact position in the video. A convenient play button in the hover box allows you to play the moment of the annotation directly. A 2x slower button allows you to play that position in slow motion. This function works the same way for YouTube videos and CLAS s internal videos. 4.5 MODIFYING YOUR OWN ANNOTATIONS To modify your own annotations, click on one of the blue annotation arrows and it will open up the annotation window on the right hand side. Editing Options: Start and end time of annotation: click on the fast forward or rewind buttons beside the start times Tags and description: simply add or remove content You can delete your annotation by clicking on delete, or save the updated changes by clicking on update. 12
13 DOWNLOADING VIDEOS Note: This feature is only available if turned on by the instructor Click on the first icon to the top left of the video to download. SEARCHING When the hover on words to search option is checked, users can hover over a specific word within the annotations and all the comments and annotations that have used the same word will be highlighted in green. Partial matches are highlighted in a lighter green. Hovering over Usernames will search specifically for annotations and comments made by that user. 13
14 ANONYMOUS VIEW AND ACCESS *This feature is only available if your instructor has allowed anonymous users to view and comment/annotate on the course or video. Anonymous users can comment and annotate on videos but cannot edit it once it has been submitted. Anonymous users can insert a nametag in the add nametag to posts box, and this will display on their comments/annotations. If nothing is added, the annotation/comment will be displayed as NO USERNAME. (in other words, anonymous). SELF REGISTER AND SELF SUBSCRIBE External users who do not have a UBC CWL but are provided with an invitation link/enrolment code by the instructor can self-enrol into a CLAS course/collection. 8.1 SELF REGISTER VIA INVITATION LINK 1. Go to the invitation link provided by your instructor 2. If you do not have a CLAS Account, you will have to first create a Guest Account by clicking on Sign up here. Users who already have a CLAS account will log in and proceed to Step 4. 14
15 3. After the external user has signed up for an account, he/she will receive a confirmation to activate their account. 4. You should see the following message after you log in. Click on video view to access the CLAS course/collection. 8.2 SELF REGISTER VIA ENROLMENT CODE 1. Go to the CLAS log in page 2. For UBC CWL users, log in through UBC users login ; for external users with no CWL, log in through external users login 15
16 CWL Login Guest Login 3. After logging in, you will be prompted to enter the enrolment code provided by your instructor. z Once you have entered the enrollment code, you will be enrolled in the course and you will be able to access the videos. 16
17 QUOTA Most courses do not have student video upload enabled. If this feature is enabled for your CLAS course/collection but if the option is enabled, the default quote for students is 4096MB or 100 files. The number highlighted in green shows how much of the quota has been used. The number in black shows the maximum amount of files you can upload. In this example, the student has used 23MB out of the available 4096MB. There is no quota for uploading self-recorded responses to annotations or comments for courses. 17
18 CLAS MOBILE All features of CLAS are also available in the mobile version. Aside from watching and commenting on videos, you can also record or upload your own videos on your phone or tablet. Videos will automatically be assigned to your own video collection after uploading or recording. 18
19 CLASSROOM BACKCHANNEL This feature allows students to use their laptops or mobile devices as a Personal Response System to give live response feedback. When your instructor begins a live response activity, you will be prompted by an invitation in CLAS. Click OK to enter. If you reject, the session will be displayed in your playlist. During the live session, you can annotate and access all the features normally as you would for any other video. Annotations will be in sync with the time it is made in the live session.
