Spring, 2005 Volume 1, Issue 1 Articles in this issue Important dates Comments from our Prez Comments on our local ecology Meet our new neighbors Notes from our Property Manager Shorewood history (first of a series) In Memoriam Homes for sale A beach fire primer How to attract hummingbirds Help wanted ads News you can use A Shorewood Hills newsletter is not new. Like Yogi Berra once said, "it's déjà vu all over again". John Lamping, our community historian, tells us that the very first Shorewood newsletter was mimeographed (can you smell the ink and picture the blue fingers?) and issued on Memorial Day So, it seems that history repeats itself. Sixty-three years later, Shorewood Sands is here. Look for three issues a year April, mid-summer and Fall. The goal is to enhance our sense of community and pride by increasing communication, as we publish information about us and ours in this special place we call Shorewood Hills. You will find columns from our President, Property Manager, and Historian. We will be in touch with an area naturalist for help ridding our property of pesky weeds, or to Published By and For the Residents of Shorewood Hills, Michigan IT'S DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN educate us on the flora and fauna of our area, or what plants will work in our yards. And we will keep you posted on home sales and construction projects, new neighbors, and provide a calendar of upcoming events to add to your PDA s. We're even planning a website to further improve communications with residents. If you have any news or announcements, changes of address, phone or , please contact our intrepid editorial staff, Paul Gaecke (PFGaecke@mac.com), Jim Wessendorf (Jawesson@sbcglobal.net), or Sally Kinnamon (skinnamon@aol.com). We'd love it if you would send pictures, as well. If you have some to share, attach them to an in JPEG format with resolution set no less than 150 dpi. There may be some editing, of course, but we look forward to everyone's contributions to Shorewood Sands. Send your news or pictures to newsletter@shorewood-hills.com Important Dates To Put On Your Calendar Our SHOREWOOD BEACHES are a favorite place and an incredible asset. Everyone enjoys a clean beach. But it doesn t just happen. It happens because residents of our community take responsibility to make Shorewood the place we want it to be. So, put it on your calendar; pick the beach you want to help ready for your summer fun -- South, Middle or North--go there at the prescribed time to help out. Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 28--9:00 a.m. (MI time, of course!) Meet at your favorite beach!! If gardening is your thing, help spruce up our PLAYGROUND for the summer season. Bring good tools and rake. We ll be trimming the ivy, raking what winter has left us and weeding the perennial beds. You ll be helping Shorewood look its best and in the process you ll get to know your neighbors, too. Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday May :00 a.m. (MI time) Meet at Playground Can you believe we'll be walking down the North Beach hill in our bare feet in just a few months? Deer Creek Open Space Association will sponsor NATURE WALKS on Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. These popular programs, led by knowledgeable local naturalists, show us more about our local ecology than we ever imagined. Watch for specific days and times on the bulletin board and in another mailing. These are great events! Come join us for a walk through our community! Our first walk will start at the Playground on Memorial Day Weekend. Watch for the day and time. See more important dates on the next page

Do You Want To Feel Wanted And Needed? but nothing like a beautiful Shorewood sunset. We desperately need someone to step up and volunteer to be Shorewood's Playground Chairperson. The job has been ably performed by Sharon Jenness. But Sharon and her family will be relocating from Chicago to the Battle Creek area where Jim will tend to Tony the Tiger and make sure Kellogg s is G-r-r-e-a-a-t!! Sadly, that means Sharon must resign as playground chairperson. She has done a wonderful job and will be sorely missed. Sharon explains, If you like gardening and have a desire to keep one of Shorewood s most popular and well-used common areas looking great, this is the opportunity for you. The playground committee is responsible for organizing a volunteer playground clean-up in the Spring, maintaining the perennial flower beds and making sure the playground equipment is in safe condition for our children." LATE-BREAKING (GOOD) NEWS!! Just as Shorewood Sands was going to press we got the wonderful news that one of our new residents, Jennifer Larson, has volunteered to serve as our Playground Chairperson. Please welcome Jennifer and let her know how you can help by ing her at jblarson@ameritech.net Would You Like Hummingbirds At Your House? It's easy to view hummingbirds close up, just like this. Shorewood is a summertime haven for hundreds of Ruby-Throated hummingbirds. These little birds arrive in Spring and depart for South America in late September. One can spend many enjoyable moments just sitting and watching them feed and interact with one another. If you would like to join those of us who enjoy watching our resident families of Ruby- Throated hummingbirds, it is really quite easy to attract them to your home. Any of the local garden stores carry a selection of feeders for these little birds. The feeders can be hung quite close to your house or porch, providing for comfortable viewing. After hanging your hummingbird feeder, it's simply a matter of mixing up some sugar solution with a little red food coloring. You'll be ready for some great "birding" right from your easy chair! Sugar solution can be made by boiling 1 cup sugar with 2 cups water stir put in 2 drops red food color cool, and fill your feeder.

Page 3 of 6 Shorewood Sands Comments From Our Prez In the city, time becomes visible -- Lewis Mumford This spring letter is actually being written in mid-february. It is mild, gray, rainy, could be mistaken for November; but buds are swelling on the branches outside my window. My dog Jack and I had a long walk early this morning, and my personal part of this letter was sketched as we walked. I am pleased to report that Shorewood s affairs are in good order. The dues increase, whose reception by you was a source of worry to your Board, has been endorsed overwhelmingly by the membership, and our Treasurer Barbara Cohen tells me there were more than a few who offered to supplement it without being asked. And others have quietly supported various improvements here and there. Our finance committee with four members has revised our budgeting process to enable reserve funds for future inevitable costs (such as road resurfacing) to be built up, and has made the job of managing our finances less daunting to future volunteers by dividing it sensibly; and a new volunteer has already appeared, a banker no less! There is a lot of new construction in Shorewood, my own included, and a trend to pushing the limits of size and scale, already identified in our recent survey as the largest single danger to our character, has continued. My own experience is that it is almost impossible to resist the urge to assert one s pretensions in physical form, and it is alas all too easy to do with an architect's pencil. When one replaces, the oldness of a building is lost and cannot be recovered. It can t be planned or designed-in the new structure; it s meaning and beauty arise insensibly slowly from time and circumstance. The right design of a seaward gable has arisen from the fate of the wrong designs. This may extend to the land as well: Shorewood Hills has some lovely gardens, some not so; but none of them so elegant as what spills from nature s hand unaided. Consider even the edge of the highway: no sooner a fence but it is ornamented with a vine, no ditch without its lofty grass springing and maybe frogs, no tree s shade but a trillium appears; and all without planting, fertilizing, pruning, mowing, or raking. In their building and limitation of landscaping, those old Swedes drew on a deep and noble sense of simplicity (and economy) allied to nature s own; it may take another great depression for most of us to recover it. In this matter I am critical of architects failures: in two miles of lakefront - lovely without effort on its own - from Shorewood Hills south, there is one after another vapid, glass-encrusted monuments to some man s ego thrusting itself forward, in our member James Nowacki s memorable description, like dads at the railing at the soccer field. The beautiful houses are all old. Maybe we should have only women design our homes? I can recommend an alternative vision, in a wonderful book, the only one ever given a research award by the American Institute of Architects: A Pattern Language, by Christopher Alexander. It's an expensive book, but worth it and unforgettable. Or try The Old Way of Seeing by Jonathan Hale. Our Board especially its zoning chair, Clyde Rode, has been wonderful in defending Shorewood's special character, but it can be a terrible, wearing job. There, I m feeling better. Beware The Dreaded Garlic Mustard! Spring is just around the corner--that time of year when the dreaded Garlic Mustard, that inveterate weed that threatens to take over our world begins to bloom and spread. Disguised as a pretty flower, garlic mustard is recognized by its tiny, four-petaled white flowers blooming in rounded clusters. Naturalist Kip Miller of Love Creek Nature Center, (Berriencounty.org/parks) tells us the best way to rid your property of garlic mustard is to pull it up, roots and all, while it's blooming and most recognizable in the Spring. Be sure to put it in a plastic bag to discard. If you just pull it and lay it on the ground to decay, the seeds will drop off, spread and come up again next year. Kip also reminds us that it is important to be aware that where you find garlic mustard, you will often also find Poison Ivy. Poison ivy is frequently found in the undergrowth and also climbing the trunks and even in the limbs of trees. Kip suggests you wear gloves, long-sleeved shirt and long trousers when destroying the garlic mustard and accompanying poison ivy. Be sure to wash your hands with an oil-cutting cleanser soon after working in the yard or woods to wash away the oily sap of the poison ivy that causes those itchy blisters. In Memoriam John Boersma, Ralph Ytterberg, Kay Lovett, and Janet Ryley Stephen Sittler, President, Shorewood Hills Board of Directors Garlic Mustard, if left to spread, will completely overtake and kill native plants and wild flowers in our woods. We should all take some time each year to try to keep it under control.

Shorewood Sands Page 4 of 6 Footprints On The Beach First Of A Series On Shorewood Hills History By John Lamping John Lamping spent a lot of time researching the history of Shorewood Hills and its early residents. John will share excerpts of his research and the DVD that he has published on the history of Shorewood Hills for publication in this and future issues of Shorewood Sands. Do You Remember? Here's a 1948 picture of the little cottage at 332 Orchard Boulevard. Walk by and see how it's changed over the years. Who turns 63 this year? Our Shorewood newsletter does. The very first issue was published on Memorial Day, 1942, fifteen years after Shorewood Hills (initially called Bethany Hills) opened its front gate on Tower Hill Road. Dr. G.J. Heyboer was our first editor and his wife, Anna, was the Shorewood secretary back then. "Back then goes back to when Edward Warren owned much of the property in the Three Oaks, Harbert and Sawyer area. You may recognize his name as being the founder of the Warren Featherbone Factory in Three Oaks, now the home of the Acorn Theatre. Warren was the successful son of an east-coast Congregational minister. Warren and his wife made many charitable contributions to our area including what is now the Tower Hill Church Camp across the road from our entrance. After Warren s death, many more parcels of his property were sold or donated. One became Warren Dunes State Park and another became Warren Woods down the road of the same name. In 1926, a large piece of the estate property was put up for sale and was located adjacent to Bethany Beach, our neighboring community that was founded in A syndicate was formed and organized by Bethany Beach members John Lundstrum, John Spann, Charles Lundgren and Clarence Rosen for the purpose of purchasing and developing the former Warrren property. By October, 1926 they closed the deal on what was legally described as the McLellan Orchard tract. In fact, the original orchardkeepers cottage is still located on Tower Hill Road and Pine Ave, Shorewood house # 429. At 130 acres, with 3,500 feet of beachfront, the McLellan Orchard was perhaps the largest purchase of its kind in Michigan at nearly $150,000. The syndicate Welcome Our New Neighbors Shorewood Hills welcomes two new neighbors. Make it a point to stop by and say hello. Elizabeth Wangler, 103 Hillside Drive Charles & Janet Long, 107 Hillside Drive of buyers planned to call the development Bethany Hills. Horse teams began to create and grade our roads. Street names were decided and lots were platted. A resort and health spa was envisioned on the dune overlooking the mineral springs near 502 Oak Grove. A sales office was set up and sales presentations were made at many Chicago area Swedish Baptist and Swedish Covenant churches. Bethany Hills was to become the greatest summer community, according to its sales brochures, for any gentile person of the Caucasian race, of Protestant Church affiliation or belief, and of good moral character. Pure heaven on earth in Berrien County. Our main entrance opened on June 16, 1928 and Shorewood Hills was born. It wasn t until 1933 that the membership voted to change our name to Shorewood Hills. According to archived meeting minutes, the name was changed so as not to carry a sectarian sound. Perhaps, more truthfully, also evidenced in the archives, a considerable rivalry and animosity had developed between Bethany Beach and Bethany Hills as well as confusion among visitors regarding the two names. Our Shorewood roots go back more than 75 years and, obviously, there are many stories to tell. For example, where are our original log cabins and who built them? What area of old-growth beech forest did we once own before Tower Hill Road was straightened? What Pulitzer prize-winner was a neighbor and frequent visitor? Stay tuned to future articles in Shorewood Sands for these and other stories. If you have stories of your own, please call John Lamping at (269) Shorewood Homes For Sale Shorewood Director of Real Estate Pat Conroy reports the recent listing of two homes for sale 346 Forest Trail and 265 Lake Avenue

Page 5 of 6 Shorewood Sands How To Build And Extinguish A Beach Fire Among the best memories we have of summers at Shorewood Hills are the times we sit with family and friends on the beach to watch the beautiful sunsets and then build a fire on the beach to keep warm and maybe toast some marshmallows. But come the next morning, the early visitors to our beaches often find the messy charred debris that people left from last night's beach fires. Still-hot coals that have been covered with sand have occasionally burned the feet of early beach-goers the next day. Years of experience enjoying fires on our beaches have allowed us to know the proper "rules" for enjoying fires on our beaches. For everyone's benefit we're repeating our five simple rules here. 1. Bring your own wood to build your fire. Be sure your wood is free of nails or metal. 2. Pick a safe location well away from anything that could be ignited by sparks. 3. Dig a generous-sized pit in the sand and build your fire at the bottom of the pit. 4. Before you leave, extinguish your fire with lake water. Use the buckets provided at each beach. Be sure your fire is out before you leave. Do not cover the ashes with sand. (Beach visitors will do that the next day.) 5. Remove any unburned wood or other debris left from your beach party. Leave the beach as you'd like to find it on the next day. Improving The Quality Of Our Weekends In The Country Year of experience enjoying fires on our beaches have taught us five simple rules for building and enjoying beach fires safely. Peace and Quiet Some Shorewood residents as well as our neighbors near the northern end of our community have suffered an increasing number and volume of announcements from the loudspeaker system at Warren Dunes State Park. Shorewood Director Bob Beemer investigated and determined that a powerful, omni-directional emergency loudspeaker system that was installed on park property by American Electric Power is being used by park personnel for a variety of public announcements. Last summer usage of the system seemed to increase, disturbing the tranquility of the time we spend in Shorewood Hills. The new system is required by the Nuclear Regulatory Agency and is intended for area-wide announcements of nuclear emergencies. Its increasingly frequent use by park personnel has escalated the problem from a mere annoyance to major noise pollution. A committee of Shorewood residents met with park management and Department of Natural Resources executives to negotiate reduced use of the powerful AEP speakers. We were assured that plans are underway to accommodate our requests during this coming summer. We will hope for the best from our efforts. Let There Be Light Or Better Yet, Dark! Our Board of Directors has recently approved the installation of light shades on eight of Shorewood's streetlights. The new shades will direct the light downward and prevent light pollution. Now we'll be able to enjoy the stars on clear summer evenings even better. Thanks to the Board for their efforts to keep Shorewood Hills a very special place. Dan's Corner Comments From Our Property Manager Here are a couple good ideas that Dan Pittner, our Property Manager, would like to pass along Be sure to leave a house key with Dan to use in the event of an emergency. You can't imagine how much damage has been averted because Dan was able to easily enter an unoccupied house to investigate a possible problem. When you are gone, leave your blinds or curtains slightly open; we can detect any unusual activity in your residence. If your home is equipped with a security system, make sure that Dan has all the appropriate codes and information to respond to an alarm. Dan may be able to head off the police and avoid you incurring the hefty fee for a false alarm. He will reset your alarm should he need to de-activate it to gain access to your home. Remember to display your automobile beach pass on your car's rearview mirror and stickers on your golf carts and mopeds. The beach passes and stickers will be mailed to you well in advance of the summer season. We will begin "booting" or towing violators Memorial Day Weekend. (Ha!) Dan Pittner became our Property Manager at the beginning of the 2004 summer season. During his first year, he has quietly made many improvements in and around our community. If you haven't met Dan, be sure to stop by the office in our Community House and say hello.

Help Us With Our Website An internet domain name has been registered for use as a community website what we don't have is anyone with a lot of expertise in designing a website or arranging for the web hosting. Necessary photography and content will be provided, but we need help on the technical side. If you can help, contact webmaster@ shorewood-hills.com Who Should I Contact? When something happens around Shorewood, how many times have we asked ourselves, "Who should I contact about this?" Well, here's the list of the leadership of our community, their responsibilities and a way to contact them. Just remember one thing before you call to vent--none of them are so well-paid that their job at Shorewood is one they never want to give up! We'd all be better served if you take a moment and contact them with a compliment about something good that's going on in our community! Steve Sittler, President (ssittler@usa.net) Bob Miller, Executive Vice President, Security (MIMillers@qtm.net) Jim Wessendorf, Vice-President (jawessen@.sbcglobal.net) Barb Cohen, Treasurer (BANC@aol.com) Cindy Joss, Secretary (cjoss@sbcglobal.net) Bob Beemer, Roads (robertbeemer@combinedins.com) Janet Beemer, Hospitality (janet@qtm.net) Pat Conroy, Real Estate ( ) Clyde Rode, Zoning & Permits (RodeCE@aol.com) Curt Johnson & Jean Domer, Property (CJoh1342@aol.com) Jennifer Larson, Playground (jblarson@ameritech.net) Mike James, Beaches (jeannenmike@fuse.net) Our Association is led by a group of dedicated people who serve us all, asking for little more than our help, cooperation, and a simple "thank you" every now and then. Needed If you have a desk or a lockable file cabinet that isn't being used at your house, they could be put to use in the Property Manager's office. If you have either item, tell Dan Pittner what you can donate when you pick up your mail. Dan Pittner, Property Manager ( ) About Our New Newsletter In this day of instantaneous communications, your Board of Directors thought that a form of written communication--other than the annual invoice for dues and financial reports--would be appreciated by Shorewood Hills residents. Accordingly, the idea of a periodic newsletter was agreed upon. This is the first issue and certainly won't be the last. But Shorewood Sands is decidedly "under construction". Nothing about it is final, including the name, format, content or frequency of publication. If you have comments-- good or bad--let us know and we'll try to incorporate them in future issues. We wish we could say that Shorewood Sands is the product of a media guru who knows all about producing such publications. But, like most other activities in Shorewood, Shorewood Sands is the result of the best efforts of some of your neighbors. We hope you like it. SHOREWOOD HILLS ASSOCIATION Box B Tower Hill Road Sawyer, Michigan US POSTAGE PAID As long as we're not mailing this issue separately, we decided to use this space for an important request. In the interest of economy we would like to be able to send future issues of Shorewood Sands to your address in PDF format. But we need to compile the addresses of our membership. We will handle your address with the greatest confidentiality. Please send your e- mail address in an message to Jim Wessendorf at < jawessen@sbcglobal.net >
