84 Elm Street Peterborough, NH USA TEL (010) FAX (010) Website: Supplement #31 DISTRIBUTING CHANGES TO LOGICAL PARTITIONS As of OS/400 V4R4, the operating system allows what it calls logical partitioning, which lets one iseries computer operate as if it were multiple separate machines. If you are running TURNOVER for iseries v100 s Development edition in one logical partition on your iseries, and want to distribute changes to TURNOVER for iseries v100 Remote in one or more other logical partitions on the same computer, then you should read the information in this supplement. Important! This supplement assumes that you are familiar with TURNOVER for iseries v100 and understand its distribution capabilities. Suppose your company (YOURCO) has four divisions, each of which operates separately using four logical partitions on one iseries computer. Since a partition functions the same as a separate system, we will call them systems NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, and WEST. Programming development and maintenance is all done on the NORTH system; NORTH wants to distribute changes to the SOUTH, EAST, and WEST systems. Single iseries Computer System NORTH Development Partition System SOUTH Production Partition System EAST Production Partition System WEST Production Partition UNICOM Systems, Inc. Version 100 Page 1
Do the following: 1. Make sure TURNOVER for iseries v100 s Remote edition is installed in all the logical partitions to which you d like to distribute changes (SOUTH, EAST, WEST). 2. TURNOVER for iseries v100 must have system definitions for all partitions on the NORTH system. To create them, sign onto system NORTH. Go to the TURNOVER for iseries v100 Distribution Menu and choose option 1 to work with system definitions. 3. Press F6 to create a system definition for NORTH: On system NORTH: 2/26/01 Add a System Definition Your Company, Inc. 12:04:47 YOURCO North System name must System name NORTH System description... YOURCO NORTH Serial number Char, *LOCAL Serial number can be exact or *LOCAL to retrieve from system values. To get the exact value, use the DSPSYSVAL QSRLNBR command. Press Enter to save the definition. 4. Now use F6 on the Work with System Definitions panel to create a system definition for the SOUTH system, as follows: NORTH's definition 2/26/01 Add a System Definition Your Company, for SOUTH: Inc. 12:04:47 YOURCO North System name must System name SOUTH System description... YOURCO SOUTH Serial number S Char, *LOCAL Serial number must match the NORTH system, with any character added to the end. In this case, we added an S for SOUTH." UNICOM Systems, Inc. Version 100 Page 2
As the panel shows, you must add a single character to the end of the serial numbers for each of the other systems, to distinguish them from the local system. In this case, we chose to use S, W, and E in keeping with the system locations. 5. Repeat step 4 on the NORTH system for systems EAST and WEST, adding characters E and W to the end of each respective serial number. There should now be four system definitions on system NORTH one each for systems NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, and WEST: 13:11:41 YOURCO North 12=Distribute System 13=Change DDMF definitions 16=Distributed Applications Highlighting NORTH 10 *SNADS YOURCO LPAR System NORTH SOUTH 20 *SNADS YOURCO LPAR System SOUTH EAST 30 *SNADS YOURCO LPAR System EAST WEST 40 *SNADS YOURCO LPAR System WEST denotes the system you re currently signed onto. System NORTH 6. Sign onto system SOUTH, and start TURNOVER for iseries v100 there. Use option 11 to go to the Distribution Menu UNICOM Systems, Inc. Version 100 Page 3
7. Using option 1 on the Work with System Definitions panel on system SOUTH, create a system definition for system SOUTH (the local system). Do this just as instructed for system NORTH in step 3; change the description field text appropriately, and supply the system serial number without appending the special character to the end. Press Enter to save the definition. SOUTH s definition 2/26/01 Add a System Definition for itself: Your Company, Inc. 12:04:47 YOURCO South System name must System name SOUTH System description... YOURCO SOUTH Serial number Char, *LOCAL Serial number is the system serial number, without the special character that was added to the end in the NORTH system s definition for SOUTH. 8. Use F6 again to define system NORTH to system SOUTH, adding a special character to the end of the serial number for system NORTH (in this case we ll use N ). SOUTH's definition 2/26/01 Add a System Definition Your Company, for NORTH: Inc. 12:04:47 YOURCO North System name must System name NORTH System description... YOURCO NORTH Serial number N Char, *LOCAL Serial number is the system serial number, plus a special character added to the end. In this case, we added an N for "NORTH." There should now be two system definitions on system SOUTH one for system SOUTH itself, and one for system NORTH UNICOM Systems, Inc. Version 100 Page 4
13:11:41 YOURCO South 12=Distribute System 13=Change DDMF definitions 16=Distributed Applications Highlighting SOUTH 10 *SNADS YOURCO LPAR System SOUTH NORTH 20 *SNADS YOURCO LPAR System NORTH denotes the system you re currently signed onto. System SOUTH 9. Repeat steps 6 through 8 for systems EAST and WEST. There should now be two system definitions on system EAST, and two on system WEST one each for local systems EAST and WEST, and one on each for remote system NORTH. 13:11:41 YOURCO East 12=Distribute System 13=Change DDMF definitions 16=Distributed Applications EAST 10 *SNADS YOURCO LPAR System EAST NORTH 20 *SNADS YOURCO LPAR System NORTH System EAST UNICOM Systems, Inc. Version 100 Page 5
13:11:41 YOURCO West 12=Distribute System 13=Change DDMF definitions 16=Distributed Applications WEST 10 *SNADS YOURCO LPAR System WEST NORTH 20 *SNADS YOURCO LPAR System NORTH System WEST 10. Ensure that your TURNOVER for iseries v100 distribution defaults are correct for all systems, on all systems. 11. Create, run, and distribute a test form on system NORTH to be sure your setup works UNICOM Systems, Inc. Version 100 Page 6
